ALEX VILLAFANIA and I covered the photo shoot of Alicia Mayer just a while ago, where she wore a lettuce bikini to help promote vegetarianism in the Philippines.
Alicia is helping People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) raise public awareness, and the media was invited to take photos and videos in a sneak preview of the ad campaign that will be shot by Raymund Isaac.
This is one event where I was really struck by the impact of technology on the way we cover the news. I actually overheard one person who sounded dumbfounded that we were using a mobile phone to take photos and video.
Alex and I were taking turns using my Nokia N90, compared to the high-end digital still cameras and video recorders, and I think even some traditional ones that the photographers and TV crew covering the event were packing.
What people are starting to realize is that mobile phones are powering our INQUIRER.net Videos channel on YouTube, and that a growing number of the photos that come out on our site are actually taken with cam phones. This is how I and our reporters are doing it, and the speed and ease with which we can take photos and videos is becoming another competitive advantage for us.
Of course, we’ll also need digital cameras and digital video recorders for some of our content, but for Breaking News and our daily coverage, mobile phones are our killer app for the YouTube generation.
