Set your own appointments, Old Media scavengers

03/06/07

Posted under Eleksyon 2007, Media, Podcasts

THANKS to Mike Abundo and Abe Olandres for blogging about the invasion the INQUIRER.net office is experiencing from other media outlets, namely broadcast networks GMA 7 and ABC 5.

Here’s an excerpt from Mike’s blog post “TV Reporters Scavenging YouTube Scraps“:

I hope the Inquirer can keep these vermin out of their building. The last thing this country needs is old media scavengers pulling down new media pioneers.

Thanks, Mike; actually it was more of Eleksyon 2007 podcast scraps, though we also take behind-the-scenes footage of the audio podcast recording sessions for our INQUIRER.net Videos YouTube channel. But yup, you used the perfect word, “scavenger.”

Here’s Abe’s entry about it in his Tuesday’s Wrap post:

Joey Alarilla emails asking for opinion if ABC5 and GMA 7 marauding the Inquirer.net office is unethical by media standards. I know exclusivity and privacy are things MSM value the most, but in the realms of the blogosphere it’s the other way around (i.e., the more bloggers linking to you and covering your story, the better).

Thanks, Abe.

And here’s an excerpt from my CNET Asia tech blog post:

Our podcasts are exclusive to INQUIRER.net. These recording sessions are private affairs which aren’t open to the public, and certainly not to other media outlets. These aren’t press conferences which are being held in hotels, but rather closed-door recording sessions held in our office.

Which is why it is galling to find television crews from other media outlets invading our office seeking to ambush these candidates. We convinced these candidates to take time off from their busy schedules and guest in our podcasts. Can’t these other media outlets set their own appointments? And granted that in some cases the PR people of these candidates told these journalists about these podcasts, shouldn’t you as a journalist be ashamed of benefiting from another media outlet’s hard work?

Apparently some people don’t have any delicadeza.

Spread the word. Stop the scavengers.

Hi Kelly thanks for visiting. Funny you should mention that — we’ve been quietly working behind the scenes and will roll out a new batch of blogs, so all I can say is your wish might come true sooner than you think ü

How about getting an ELECTION ISSUES 2007 Blog open like now. So that the people of the Philippines can list what the believe are the election issues this year. Don’t you think it would be better for politicians to follow our demand rather than set their agendas that are usually short sighted, costly and do not benefit the masses only the few?
I am recommending that there be an ELECTION ISSUES ONLY specific Blog for the nation. Do net search for election issues 2007 Philippines and see what you find. Its time for people to step forward and speak up.

thanks the jester-in-exile, i really appreciate your comment. i hope this will remind them of the need to respect the code of ethics and professionalism.

and yes, i agree with you and abe, the blogosphere thrives on link love. and in the true spirit of the blogosphere, our inquirer.net blogs link to our competitors — though in this extreme case, i hope i may be forgiven for temporarily not linking to the sites of these two stations in this post :)

    cheers!
