SEOUL, South Korea–I’m blogging from Seoul, where I’ll be covering the Ragnarok World Championships for INQUIRER.net, specifically for our hackenslash gaming site and iVDO online video channel.
It’s my first time to visit South Korea, arguably the broadband and online gaming capital of the world.
Our editor in chief JV Rufino joked that I was “going from Internet hell to Internet heaven,” because the past few days have been even more frustrating for me when it comes to broadband connections in Manila. Particularly since I handle iVDO as INQUIRER.net’s multimedia editor — and we all know that when it comes to online video, it’s broadband or bust.
Despite these frustrations, however, I’m really excited about all the things we’re doing for iVDO, and all the cool applications that broadband adoption has made possible.
For some time now, I’ve been addicted to Joost, and once you get a taste of it, it’s really hard to go back to the old way of watching TV and letting the networks decide when you can see the video you want.
Joost, of course, is the free broadband-only, peer-to-peer technology-based service that allows you to watch practically broadcast-quality TV on your PC. My wife Ellen and our five-and-a-half-year-old daughter Sam also loved it when I showed off Joost to them. We watched a documentary on cats plus some Aardman Studios animations.
As recommended on the Joost site, I’ll use some of the screenshots that they’re providing to the press and that have been approved by the content providers, to give you an idea of what Joost is like.
Another online video service that I’m sure you’ll find interesting is Jaman, which allows you to download high-definition videos as part of an online community of producers and lovers of world cinema. You can preview a growing list of indie films from all over the world, and then rent or buy the movies you like.
Interestingly enough, some Filipino classics are also available for rent and purchase on Jaman.
Here’s a screenshot of Amalia Fuentes and Eddie Garcia in “Blood of the Vampires” (anybody know the original title of this Filipino movie?).
And a screenshot of “The Blood Drinkers,” which also stars Amalia Fuentes.
OK, gotta go for now. Don’t let the bloodsuckers get you, heh — and I don’t mean the vampires ![]()
