Novel use for e-mail

A FEW years ago, I reviewed an online mystery novel called The Daughters of Freya from Emailmystery.com, which creatively uses e-mail as a medium for literary works.

Yup, the stories published by Emailmystery.com unfold via e-mail, with new messages getting sent to your inbox over a period of three weeks.

Now The Daughters of Freya co-author Michael Betcherman has a new e-mail story, this time a romantic comedy called Suzanne. It was great to hear from Michael again, and here’s an excerpt from his e-mail:

Imagine a story that unfolds in “real time” through emails exchanged among the characters. But instead of reading these emails in a book, they’re sent straight to your inbox, as if the characters have copied you on the emails they’re sending to each other.

Welcome to Suzanne, a wicked and witty romantic comedy by Michael Betcherman, co-author of the highly-acclaimed online mystery novel, The Daughters of Freya.

The story starts shortly after Suzanne’s husband has died, leaving her with her memories, and a portfolio of worthless investments that have depleted his once-considerable estate. Grief-stricken by this tragic turn of events, the beautiful widow finds solace in the company of a wealthy and aging suitor, but her quest for true love founders during contentious prenuptial negotiations.

Suzanne’s prospects look bleak when her late husband’s brother, Douglas, invites her to spend the summer at the family cottage on Lake Joseph, a playground for Toronto’s rich - and very rich. Douglas’ wife Catherine dreads her arrival. The two women have loathed each other for years and Catherine fears that Suzanne will set her sights on her brother Mark, a wealthy businessman who is returning to Canada after 14 years in Japan. She will do anything to keep her arch-enemy from penetrating the family circle.

An irresistible force is about to meet an immovable object.
