YAHOO! has launched the beta version of a new social networking site known as Mash, which is by-invitation only for now. I was fortunate enough to get an invitation just a few minutes ago. Thanks ultraweb for the invite — much appreciated.
I’ve just begun customizing the profile he set up for me, so it’s really bare right now. The pic shows me with my daughter Sam, who’s 5 years and nine months old. We took the pic using Photo Booth on Mikaela, my MacBook Pro, with the sepia special effect applied to it.
It’s funny how Mash got leaked to the press, apparently due to an honest mistake, as recounted in the New York Times.
Here’s an excerpt from the article.
Yesterday I received an automated e-mail from a Yahoo employee saying that he had set up a profile for me on Yahoo’s new service, Yahoo Mash. “It’s good to be loved,” the e-mail said.
But it’s no fun to be teased. I followed the link to mash.yahoo.com, which bounced me to a username/password page, titled Yahoo Guesthouse, where my Yahoo login information did not work. I pointed this out to the Yahoo employee, and he replied cryptically over e-mail:
“Yeah, I jumped the gun on inviting you. Not yet open to the public… Soon…”
About an hour later, I got an e-mail from a senior Yahoo spokeswoman, reiterating that the invitation had been premature. “We are currently testing this alpha service internally with Yahoo employees, as we do with most of our services,” she said.
Want to learn more about Yahoo! Mash? Keep visiting the Mash Blog. Interestingly enough, the Mash Blog is powered by Wordpress, and not Yahoo!’s own Yahoo! 360 blog service. Hmm… Yahoo! 360, which offered more than just a blogging tool, is Yahoo!’s existing social networking site, and it remains to be seen what will happen to it now that Mash has been launched.
Looking for Mash invites? Why not sign up for a free account at Mashable (click on the Invites section after signing up) and Invite Share — they’re both giving away invites and you can be added to a waiting list. Thanks to Michael Arrington of Techcrunch for seeding invitations.
