10 years of Synergy

UPDATE: Added video showing off Intel’s 45-nanometer wafer.

EL NIDO, Palawan–We’re here for the annual Synergy information and communications technology symposium jointly organized by Intel Philippines and HP Philippines. Synergy is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Hard to believe how much the world has changed since the first Synergy forum in 1998.

I was supposed to liveblog the press briefing, but wifi wasn’t available in the conference room so now I’m sneaking in work — like editing and uploading a news video sent by one of our reporters in Manila while writing this — before we’re off to another island.

David Fosberg, Southeast Asia regional solutions sales manager of Intel Corp.’s Asia Pacific Sales & Marketing Group, discussed how the breakthrough 45-nanometer processing technology of Intel has enabled it to not only jam more transistors into a single wafer, but, more important, give consumers better performance while also reducing energy consumption.

Our reporter Alex Villafania took a video of Fosberg showing off the 45 nanomenter wafer, and I’ll post it here as soon as it becomes available on iVDO on Yahoo!

“Hundreds of these 45-nanometer transistors could fit on a human red blood cell,” Fosberg pointed out, just to give people an idea of the scale we’re taking about here.

He stressed that for consumers and businesses, this breakthrough represents leaps in performance with less power consumption.

Intel’s 45-nanometer process makes use of a technology called High-K that reduces power leakage, Fosberg said.

“Nobody else using this,” he said.

Fosberg also said that 45 nanometer processing technology will enable new form factors for computers, such as mobile Internet devices, as well as ultra low-cost PCs.
