PluggedIn is a YouTube killer… if you’re a US customer

- Internet, Music, PluggedIn -

YUP, it’s frickin’ Hulu all over again :)

PluggedIn is an interesting site that offers thousands of high-def and broadcast-quality music videos on demand.

Will Smith, by the way, is one of the investors. Here’s an excerpt from the press statement:

Filipino 1st iPhone buyer at Grove mall in LA

- Apple, Gadgets, Mobile, Music, Videos, iPhone -

iphone-la.jpgA FEW days ago, I blogged about the iPhone launch in the US and included an Agence France-Presse photo of Jonathan (not John, as he was identified in the AFP caption) Mariano, who was first in line at the Apple Store at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles, California.

In that blog entry, I wondered aloud if Mariano was a Filipino, and guess what? He is! He posted a comment on that blog entry simply saying, “Pinoy ako (I am a Filipino)!” and included a link to his blog that documents the iPhone launch in LA and his unexpected brush with fame when he turned out to be the first in line.

How cool is that?

ABS-CBN to launch digital entertainment portal

- Convergence, Music -

WE just finished recording Episode 10 of hackenslash: the podcast a few hours ago, with ABS-CBN Multimedia head Mitch Padua as our “Hot Seat” guest.

Apart from talking to me and my co-host Alex Villafania about gaming, Mitch had interesting things to share about the upcoming portal from ABS-CBN known as Amped.ph. While gaming will be one of the offerings, the overall direction is to make it a full-blown digital entertainment site, with music downloads, mobile content and other services. By the way, Aimee Marcos will be the one in charge of the music initiatives, according to Mitch.

I won’t spoil the surprise — listen to Episode 10 once it’s onlineĀ  — but it’s interesting how ABS-CBN plans to leverage its traditional media content in order to complement the multimedia services it will offer on Amped.ph, including an iTunes-like service. Stay tuned.

EMI move music to our ears

- Apple, Internet, Music, iTunes -

IT’S a gutsy move, so props to EMI for being the first major record label to sell its music online without that pesky Digital Rights Management protection.

DRM sucks. Let’s hope this move will spark a revolution.
