Pacquiao Running Account online coverage another sign of convergence

- INQUIRER.net, Internet, Sports -

BANGKOK, Thailand–Since we introduced the Running Account, the brainchild of INQUIRER.net executive editor Leo Magno, during the Estrada impeachment trial in 2000, this blow-by-blow account has been the ace up our sleeve (well, it’s not exactly up our sleeve anymore, hehe) whenever fast-developing events unfold, like, oh coups, mutinies and such. I did most of the Running Account coverage for the Estrada impeachment trial and People Power II, and over the years it’s been a running joke to call me or Leo the Running Man. Most recently, we did it for the Eleksyon 2007 coverage.

For the Manny Pacquiao-Marco Antonio Barrera rematch, which Pacman won by unanimous decision, I’m happy to report another victory for convergence among the different members of the Inquirer Group of Publications. Philippine Daily Inquirer assistant sports editor Francis Ochoa did one heck of a job doing the Pacquiao-Barrera II Running Account, bringing in not only speed but also his expertise as a sportswriter. Kudos to Francis for a job well done. You scored a KO for convergence :)

Apart from the convergence that’s seeing the different members of our growing Inquirer family cooperating and complementing each other’s strengths, this year has also seen INQUIRER.net forging partnerships with other companies. The video clips of the Pacquiao-Barrera fight were provided by our partner Solar Entertainment via Solar Sports, and uploaded to iVDO, our online video service which is a co-branded site in partnership with Yahoo!

And this is just a taste of things to come. Watch out for more exciting stuff from INQUIRER.net and our partners.

Get your Pacman fix with The Pacquiao Files

- Convergence, INQUIRER.net, Sports -

THE NETVISION webcast was unfortunately cancelled, but you can get your steady fix of all news articles about the People’s Champion by visiting The Pacquiao Files.

The Pacquiao Files is one of the many INQUIRER.net Special Sites. It’s online all the time, constantly updated with every story on Pacquiao all year round.

Of course, the site gets tweaked whenever Manny has a fight, and our Tech people have done a great job of really jazzing it up for Pacman’s rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera on Sunday, October 7. Catch it on Solar Sports (yeah, like we Filipinos really need to be told to go watch Manny fight, heh; it’s like a national holiday whenever he has a bout).

Online coverage of Pacquiao-Solis: Manny wins by KO in 8th round

- Convergence, Mobile, Sports -

IT was a great experience watching the Manny Pacquiao-Jorge Solis fight via Smart 3G and doing the INQUIRER.net Running Account of this bout (this is my first sports Running Account, as opposed to the Estrada impeachment trial, People Power 2 and other political Running Accounts I did before).

Manny kayoed his Mexican opponent, and server traffic actually also kayoed our Running Account, heh — it was erratic, so the account was unavailable to some readers  if they were accessing the servers that went down – though our homepage is still standing and we’ve broken Pacquiao’s 8th round knockout victory as our headline.

I have to admit I’m impressed with how well the Smart 3G feed held up — we were all keeping our fingers crossed. The biggest scare we got was when the feed got disconnected as Pacquiao and Solis were being introduced, but fortunately I was able to reconnect after a few minutes.

By the way, “congressman” chants from Pacquiao supporters broke out after his postfight interview. Hmm…

Pacquiao Blaze of Glory running account

- INQUIRER.net, Internet, Mobile, Sports -

I’M doing a Running Account of the “Blaze of  Glory” bout using the Smart 3G feed on my mobile phone.

We’ve just ended Round 4 of the Brian Viloria-Edgar Sosa bout, one of the undercards.  Earlier, Bernabe Concepcion of the Philippines retained his World Boxing Council Youth superbantamweight championship in a unanimous decision over his Mexican opponent.
