Killers in the age of YouTube

- Media, TV, YouTube -

BY now, many of you have probably seen the video from beyond the grave of the perpetrator of the Virginia Tech massacre, Cho Seung-hui, who turned out to have mailed a suicide video and digital photo album to NBC. And if you haven’t seen it on TV, you might have viewed it on YouTube or other sites.

This appalling suicide video is already an Internet hit, and all you have to do is Google it.

Which brings us to the question: Should the media have given this killer this kind of airtime? What message is media sending to would-be killers, terrorists and other megalomaniacs who dream of this kind of mileage when they commit atrocities?

Joost do it

- TV, Web 2.0 -

WAS pleasantly surprised today to receive confirmation from Joost that I’ve been accepted as a beta tester.

Signed up sometime ago and now I can finally get a sneak preview of this exciting new video application from the same people behind Skype.

Of course, I have to observe the terms of agreement for beta testing. Will let you know what I can talk about once I play around with the application a bit. People keep abusing the term “YouTube killer,” but Joost is one of the most promising.

Remember what happened to the dinosaurs? Yup, they were huge and you might have thought they would rule forever, but even giants die out in the face of catastrophic change. These days, the choice is simple: Evolve or die.

The signs are all around us. Smart Communications is offering its mobile TV service.  Dream TV is following suit, as Alex Villafania wrote in his Infotech article.

Hollywood vs YouTube

- TV, YouTube -

PLANTATION BAY, Mactan, Cebu, Philippines–Am still here in Cebu, where I’ve been blogging the 2nd RAN Online Global Conference, which the Philippines is hosting this year. Check out hackenslash for the latest entries — the conference just ended and I’m just finishing writing and editing stuff before we head off later to Galapagos Beach for a Hawaiian-inspired dinner.

Read this interesting story from San Jose Mercury News, “Can Hollywood topple YouTube?” Personally, I think it’s a sign of desperation. Now these Old Media types are not just suing YouTube; they’re trying to tag-team the king of online video.

Here’s an excerpt:

NBC Universal and News Corp. announced Thursday that they are teaming up with Google’s biggest rivals in an effort to topple “the kings” of YouTube off their Internet throne.
