GRAMMY award-winning "American Idol" superstar Carrie Underwood has been named this year's World's Sexiest Vegetarian woman by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. It's the second time for Carrie, who also won in 2005. Oh, and "Tonight Show" band leader Kevin Eubanks won as World's Sexiest Vegetarian man. It's his first. According to the PETA announcement, the red-carpet runners-up include Kristen Bell of "Veronica Mars;" "Spider-Man 3's" Bryce Dallas Howard; actor Joaquin Phoenix; Milo Ventimiglia, better known as Peter Petrelli on "Heroes;" columnist Michael Ausiello; and 30 Seconds to Mars vocalist Jared Leto. SURE, she may have represented Norway in the recent Miss Universe pageant, but Fil-Norwegian Kirby Ann Basken is promoting Philippine tourist spots and fulfilling her responsibilities as last year's Mutya ng Pilipinas. Here's an excerpt from Armin Adina's story for the Philippine Daily Inquirer:

Basken, born to a Filipino mother and Norwegian father, was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas last year. In April this year, she bagged the Miss Norway crown making her the European country's representative to the Miss Universe pageant.

The 5-foot-9 television presenter arrived from Norway on Wednesday, not only to relinquish her title to the next Mutya, but also to take her Norwegian friends to several destinations in the country. "I wish we have more time, we'll be here for only two weeks," Basken, 21, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in an interview at the Sulo Hotel in Quezon City. She said she will take her friends to Boracay, and will later explore Palawan, Cebu, Mindoro and Iloilo if they still have time.

WHO says you can't have your cake and eat it too? OK, in this case, instead of cake it's vegetables hehe :) Alicia Mayer, who a few months ago wore a lettuce bikini in a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals photo shoot to promote vegetarianism in the Philippines, has reportedly taken the early lead in this year's World’s Sexiest Vegetarian poll sponsored by PETA US. Check out this pic that the local PETA office sent us. INQUIRER.net reporter Alex Villafania and I had fun covering that photo shoot, and it was great interviewing Alicia and finding out why she became a vegetarian. She told us that this was after she viewed videos of factory farms on PETA.org, and saw the kind of cruelty being committed against animals. She's always had a soft spot for animals, and she's been a passionate volunteer for PETA. Here's an excerpt from the PETA press statement:

In the month-long poll, which is sponsored by PETA US, Mayer is duking it out with other celebrity contenders, including Isabel Roces, Corey Wills, Chin Chin Gutierrez, and Yasmien Kurdi. Previous winners of the poll include Carrie Underwood, Chris Martin, Andre 3000, Tobey Maguire, Prince, Alicia Silverstone, Shania Twain, Kristen Bell, and Natalie Portman. "When you look at the more than 200 gorgeous celebrities in this year’s poll, there are no bones about it -- a vegetarian diet makes you beautiful inside and out," says PETA Asia Pacific Director Jason Baker. "After all, going vegetarian is the best thing that you can do for animals, the Earth, and yourself. Plus, everyone knows that there’s nothing sexier than someone who exudes both passion and compassion."

So if you get the chance, go to the site and vote for your chosen celebrity. I gotta admit I've liked Alicia even during the days when she was still Alicia Bonifacio and gaining popularity as an Internet celebrity, before making the leap to show biz. ELLEN BARKIN looks like Cameron Diaz. In fact, call me crazy but in "Ocean's 13," she's even hotter than Ms Diaz is in some of her movies. "Charlie's Angels?" Drew and even Lucy was hotter. The movie I can remember Cameron at her sexiest was in her breakthrough film "The Mask." Speaking of which, wasn't Ellen Barkin in a movie with Al Pacino before? (This I wrote before doing a Wikipedia search.) Turns out I was right -- "Sea of Love," a late 80s film I must have seen as one of those late-night movies on Channel 9 way back. In "Ocean's 13," where Ms Barkin plays assistant to Mr. Pacino's villainous character, her role isn't much, no remarkable lines even. I guess she need not say much because her physique says it all. Her eyes exude sexiness, unlike Cameron Diaz whose eyes seem to bulge in a perpetual state of giggly joyfulness. Ms Barkin is in the same league as other Hollywood actresses -- Rene Russo? FROM The Simple Life to The Prison Life. Madame Tussauds New York has dressed the wax figure of Paris Hilton in a black and white striped jailbird suit. This will be the wax Paris' uniform for the duration of the real-life socialite's prison sentence. Paris has been sentenced to 45 days for violating the terms of her probation by driving with a suspended license, but could be released in 23 days for good behavior. So, OK, a lot of people really, really hate Paris, but though I do find her somewhat annoying and overexposed, for some reason I still have a soft spot for her. I dunno, she's cute. She's a character. And she's one of those celebrities that people love to hate. People can't stand her, but somehow they still find themselves reading stuff about her. How about you, what do you like about Paris? And what do you hate about her? And how about the American justice system, huh? Could you imagine a celebrity like Paris having to spend jail time in the Philippines something like this? Heck, famous or powerful people here get away with much, much worse.
