Board topnotcher to nurses: passion to serve a must

By Izah Morales INQUIRER.net "WHEN you decide to become a nurse, there should be a passion to serve and to care," said Aira Therese Salamanca Javier of the University of Santo Tamos (UST), who topped the recent Board of Nursing exams of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) with a rating of 86 percent. She said that going abroad should not be the primary motivation to pursue a career in nursing. Asked to comment on the controversial leakage of the nursing board exams in the past, she stressed that nurses should always stand for integrity and honesty because they're dealing with people's lives. Javier topped the board exams out of 64,459 students who took it. She was a UST scholar for four years. Watch my video interview with Javier.

27,000 out of 64,000 examinees passed the Philippine board, that showed how tough it is to pass the Phil Nurses Board exam and that should be a lesson to all who are aspiring to be nurses; to do good and she is right, you have to be from a reputable institution to be able to tackle the real sense of the dream to be a nurse. THE ESSENCE TO SERVE is in-grained to the career. All of you seem to have the common goal, to finish the most-sought-after career, NOT to serve the Philippine hospitals, but to get out and earn the high-salaried job that is in demand in North America and UK, the essence to serve should be part of it, otherwise you will not survive in the US. This is the same reason why nurses and we, doctors did the same, in the early 80's and years before then in the early 1960's. So, Go ahead...study hard, choose the right good Nursing School, keep the passion to help us doctors to heal...don't be afraid to say...you want to get out of the Philippnies for a better tomorrow. People left in the Philippines who coud eat and live in luxury are either: the elites, the born-rich, the showbiz people & the dirty politicians. All others struggle, to save for their children.

I agree...help your family and then help others through integrity, dedication and responsibility as a Nurse regardless you are in the Philippines or abroad...

Whatever the motivation for anyone to pursue nursing, the individual will eventually deal with those consequences sooner or later. If they went in for the sole purpose of going abroad and making money, time will come when they will find out how difficult it is to be a "real nurse". Money is good. Physical wealth and possession is great, but personal satisfaction and pride is worth more than both. The profession of nursing is such that not only it can take a toll on you physically but as well as emotionally and psychologically. I should know, still in the profession for 18 years. But when I see such a dramatic number between the number of takers versus the number of passers, only one thing crossess my mind, how sad our nursing curriculum is.The goverment should regulate the curriculum so we are producing quality professionals rather just massive quality. It sad to see a person with a degree, without the education which that degree should have represented.
Let us keep the nursing profession, alive in the Philippines, and let us maintain the integrity, standard, and pride, which the nursing profession represents!

i think she didn't know yet the reality outside.

"...passion to serve and to care." While this statement is genuinely meant, I honestly believe that economics become the ultimately deciding factor why people in general, and health professionals in the Philippines in particular must choose for better opportunities (financial, career growth, stability, security, etc) elsewhere. Unfortunately, the country has not been able to provide these opportunities, while continuously enhancing the supply of nursing graduates ( must be true for PTs and other professions as well) with very limited opportunities post-grad, with most likely being underemployed or unemployed. While the " passion ..." continues, unless opportunities become available, the reality of economics is enough to motivate an individual to make different choices.

I believe that it is not the nursing curriculum's fault that we have such low rate of board passers almost every year. It is God's will that some passed and some don't. There are those people who did not study much but surprisingly passed the nursing licensure examination and there are those people that really did excell during college but did not pass. There's always a reason for everything.

Nursing service isn't exclusive for your own country;even Nightingale did not proclaim that in her pledge. Every client is a patient indeed;whether here in the Philippines or abroad. There is nothing wrong about nurses planning to go abroad to fulfill their callings as a nurse.Wherever you practice nursing what you are doing is still serving people and rendering care. And that's the essence of our calling.

PRC board members,
I believe that it is not the nursing curriculum’s fault that we have such low rate of board passers almost every year. It is PRC's will that some passed and some don’t. There are those people who did not study much but surprisingly passed the nursing licensure examination and there are those people that really did excell during college but did not pass...just like my neighbor who pass the board last 2007,na according to her,nag try out lang sya para magka idea;but she did pass ha,ha,ha PRC could u explain this matter?? syempre Nurses are sharing experiences;dba nakaka tawa?

I did passed the Nursing board exam 2007.Actually,I just graduated and I took the board without any review. Ngayon wala pa din me work until now..

I dont know but i really dont see topping the nurses exam as a 'major achievement' per se. Nursing being just a 2month or 2year course in some countries, and the 'unglamorous' nature of work the nurses have, I feel that it has really not that much weight. Or maybe its just me.

The PNA should help find a way to develop newly registered nurses. Medical facilities are understaff but could not hire more. Many nurses are unemployed. Quo vadis PNA?

I believe she showed strength when it is simply easier to get scared and be bewildered. She showed that belief in one's self and in the vocation one chooses is a must when takingt a course whatever that course may be. She isnpires others by the sheer determination she displayed in order to reach the top. It's simply her way of saying,"if I can do it, so can you." Congratulations Aira Javier. You must have made your parents, teachers, school, and friends very proud. Rightfully so.

One day she'll realize that here she is a board top notcher working hard to serve her country but struggling to send her children to school (nursing maybe).

I hope when she realize that even in an institution like hospitals corruption is rampant It wont be too late for her.

We are here overseas but serving the humanity not just for Filipinos like me.

Let us be realistic. The reason why nurses are playing a huge part in the Filipino diaspora is because they do not get the right compensation in our country. No matter how great one's "passion to serve and care" is, the need to have a decent life is something you always have to consider.

tell that to gloria and her congress .. and just about every politicos and government official ...

ust din ako. lowerbatch namin si aira. 2007 kami, passer din. what she says is what we were taught. what we were taught, is how we now live. to tell you the truth most of the graduates from our school are from "may kaya" families, pero look naman, we're so willing to serve kahit saang country basta makatulong. parte na yan ng "pagpapalaki" sa amin ng UST. of course we want to go abroad, but of course, gusto namin makatulong: not only to our families but to our kababayans us well.

congrats to all who passed the board! i personally don't find anything wrong when people go abroad to pursue their dream and aspirations in life. i've immigrated to canada too and for nearly ten years now, i'm still surprise to learn that even nursing graduates here would still opt to go to U.S. to work because of better pay, benefits, signing bonus, etc. on the other hand, over a hundred thousand of americans are in the city where I live and make canada as their permanent home. so you can see that it's not only pinoys who leave their own country for greener pastures. i thought that perhaps at the end of the day, what most people want to happen is to be able to do the job that they love to do and to be well compensated for it so that they can have a good life for their loved ones.

Way to go Aira!
I was a placer myself but I decided to serve my country first then go elsewhere. There's nothing wrong in working smarter!
I don't think there's anything wrong with our Nursing Curriculum.. if at all it is at par with the US/UK.. why else would they not require us to go through nursing school again but just to pass the required board exams.

To ms. JAvier,

That was my logic when I took nursing way back in the 90's. As a matter of fact, one has to satisfy the college chairperson that going overseas is the last option and serving the country's infirm citizens is the primary reason why I took nursing.

But nobody could stay still in the place (pinas) when hospital is closing doors for employment while the yearly population of nursing graduates adds up by tens of thousands.

It could had been a bad choice of going out but it could be worse if I didn't and clip my my big dreams with a noble philosophy of staying if you could and leave when you had enough of serving the motherland.

So serve with all your might and stay where you felt serving has its outmost calling to your country men....

We've done our share, so you should.

Cheers,

indew

"27,000 out of 64,000 examinees passed the Philippine board, that showed how tough it is to pass the Phil Nurses Board exam"
----------------------------
Is it really tough ?, or its just the quality of the graduates? 64,000 examinees, what a thriving business nursing is. Ahh, how many jobless nursing graduates are there now in the Phil? 100,000 , 200,000??

It a very simple matter if the choice is serving your fellow Filipinos or foreigners but it is not. Its a choice between a life of strugle to a life abundance and comfort for the person and his/her family.
The only way to award the people who choose to serve us is by giving them the chance of a good life. Our nurses should at least earn PHP60T a month, Doctors - PHP120T. Not only healthcare, teachers should earn at least PHP40T, varying on how good they are and the amount of time they work. On the other side, every Filipino should get free health care.

Congratulations to all who passed!!!... and better try again next time to all who didn’t… I’m sure you’ll make it the next time… just try hard and pray…

My son is now in third year, and I hope he will make it when their times will be on… I’ll pray hard and work hard here in Afghanistan for it…

I just hope that the articles and rumors concerning nurse’s job here and abroad have been overloaded is incorrect… let us be optimistic and positive for the future of our nurses…

The government and medical or nurse’s organization should do something for the future of our nurse’s… I’m sure there are lots of ways to promote and exposed the capacity and skills of our own people…

My appeal to all concerned: Please do not print or published any articles that could demoralized the momentum of our students and the hard work of their parents…

If you could not do something that will boost the mind of our student and parents… please refrain from issuing or printing an ads which could discouraged and disheartened us…

nurses are flexible..should and always be..just a matter of interpretation..

Taking the board exam.is nerve racking. For those who did not pass do not despair try it again on Dec.this time give your 101%.Like the saying say try and try again until you succeed.
