WHEN Philippine politics seems hopeless for some, a few leaders still see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Mayor Sonia Lorenzo of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo, Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio and Isabela Governor Grace Padaca still believe that good governance and ethical leadership is possible as they advocate the movement, “Kaya Natin.”
“By ourselves, we have demonstrated on our localities that good governance and ethical leadership is possible especially with the support of the constituency,” said Robredo.
Robredo elaborated that leaders cannot do the work alone. The government and the people should work hand in hand. He related that in Naga City, non-government organizations are part of the decision-making. Also, Padaca stressed that no one should be exempted from doing his share.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo shared that citizen empowerment increased participation of sectors.
She cited that students participated in their municipal programs. Behind the success of people’s participation in San Isidro was the framework called bridging leadership, said Lorenzo.
“Bridging leadership framework is where you co-own the issue and co-create solutions. What we did is we used programs to transform people,” explained Lorenzo.
Achieving development in their localities brought lessons to these leaders.
Lorenzo said that she learned to listen to people while Robredo still believe that good governance is good politics.
Before the forum ended, these leaders left the audience with the acronym, EAT (engagement, accountability, transparency), where people should engaged in government activities and hold their leaders accountable while leaders should be transparent in accomplishing their duties.
When good governance and ethical leadership seems impossible, there are still a few people who believe that it is possible and proved that it can be done.

Actually good governance is not a dream only, nor a wish-it is a reality. Politicians may later realize, this is the best and strongest ticket for an institutional political tenure...vote buying only comes next (when one runs out of lasting ideas)!
Julius
The problem is our society. We are an immature and power hungry society who only look for our own shallow self interests. Our "noble" leaders are just being eaten up by the corrupt ones.
What we need is to share a common goal. And that goal is making this country a fairer place than before. Where hard work earns due reward. Where wrongdoing earns rectification. Where the deserving are given opportunity to shine and the lazy ones are corrected.
But a democratic system of making decisions based on the whims of an immature society simply will not work.
What we need is an ethical and enlightened dictator who will make all decisions based on long term gains not short term profits; who will force us to take bitter pills than temporary palliatives; who will train us with the proper mindset to national maturity; and who will make the necessary preparations for us, so that when we are ready and mature enough to take the helm of our own future, we will do just fine.
Lets face it, nobody is perfect. Well there is such thing as good governance but I believe there is no good politician. Its best to choose the lesser evil all the time.
Good Philippine Government? Pinoys look at govt positions as negosyo. The higher the position, the bigger the business. People want a govt position because of "paano ba ako kikita diyan?" instead of "what can I do for my country?".
Nakakahiya kayo.
If the Filipino people really want good governance and prosperity to our nation. I highly recommended the good mayor of Makati City, no other than Mayor Jejomar Binay to become next President of the Philippines. Though he is not a senator but his administrative capability is highly admirable. He transforms Makati from hopeless town to a highly urbanized city.
In 2010 Presidential elections, the Filipino people should be smart in choosing the right candidate. Choosing a wrong person is 6 years instability in the country. Be smart! Pilipinas Mahalin Natin..Atin Ito!
I still believe there are politicians who are good. The voters should help to get votes for these kind of politicians. There is still a chance in the ballot boxes . The people should be vigilant. More power to Mayor Robredo ( my kababayan bicolano),Mayor Lorenzo, Gov. Padaca,Gov. Panlilio. May your tribe increase!
Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people.
Proverbs 14:34
Read carefully.
We become poor because of sin, for example: an ungodly politician has engage himself with adultery. He will be spending lots of money to satisfy his greediness of women. He will be spending
luxury car, pamporma nya, to attract his victims. at marami pa syempre!
Remember the money spent in sin could be used to generate jobs for poor Filipinos.
That's how sin work in poverty.
Yes you're all right that good governance is required for a nation to prosper but it is the Lord who enlarges territory and make a city prosper! He set-up kings and deposes them!
God bless Philippines! I love Filipinos!
As for me I am really disappointed. Parang wala ng pag-asa... all those that look honest and look lily white will become thiefs and demons once they get in office. I am depressed about the whole situation, we seem to be digging ourselves into a deeper hole that, I believe, we cannot climb out. All of those that truly claim to be for reform are limited by what they can do. Those in power have the means politically, financially and would you believe militarily to stop any genuine effort to make our lives better.
Sorry to all.... but that's how I feel.
Atong
When rapists, muderers and thieves are pardoned, when the identity of the national hero is altered to please the foreigners, when big businessmen are all foreigners, when drug lords and racketers become successful politicians and public servants kuno, when the politicians children and dogs became politicians themselves, when the learned pinoys have to sell themselves abroad to earn a living, let alone a decent one, what is left there to hope for in Philippine politics?
We shouldn't just vote wisely on senators, presidents, and vice presidents, but mostly on congressmen, mayors, and even barangay captains. Coz these lower positions are tunnels of a corrupt governance. Sa barangay captain nagsimula ang bayaran, sa mga tao, galing sa mayor, from the congressmen, and to the president. fortunately, wala silang kapit sa senador dahil talo ang kanilang mga tuta.. even a bad president can be immobilised if all the the lower positions are against her..
Gloria should be held accountable, even his cronies, so that foreign investments will again have confidence in our governance and they will bring back those job opportunities they have given us before and this country will prosper.. If you ask for forgiveness Gloria, we will forgive you, but the law must be obeyed.. You have sinned against US, the Filipino People, and God. God forgives u for what you have done to the Filipino People and to this Nation. If you have the audacity, do so.. I don't know what kind of CONSCIENCE do u have. Can u sleep well at night while the Filipino people are starving and homeless ??
the source of all evil is Gloria, Hindi na tayo magbulag-bulagan pa. . She will find ways to extend her term.. I don't know what kind of evil she is . . Is she a person or just pure, the Devil herself . . The devil will always find ways to be integrated into. the devil might even be a priest, a pastor, or a president.. We don't know, all we can do is pray . .
edward, you meant to say dictator? did i get that right, so far as i know, dictators will always be the villain, and not the other way around. Dictators will never think for the welfare of the people. And, they will only do things that will enrich themselves. I think you're just confused.
Atong, totoo yan, they will use the military to stop us from expressing our democratic values. That's what happened during marcos' time and even today, it's coming back. You could just see how they use the military during ninoy's day, aug. 21, used a thousand police to safeguard who? I doubt if it's for the filipino people. The military, should now consider that they are for the people and not for politicians, everytime they hurt a citizen, they are hurting the people who gave them employment and salaries. Military and cops should be used against bad guys and not against the citizen of this country .. Could u imagine, they, the military, hurting an un-armed citizen.. where is justice..
