UPDATE: Nursing Board topnotcher Jovie Ann Decoyna, a graduate of Baguio Central University, urges her peers to take the initiative amid the financial crisis that has affected job opportunities even for nurses.
She got a rating of 89 percent. She is one of over 88,000 examinees that took the Nursing Licensure Exams in November 2008.
“We should take the initiative to look for the job rather than being idle. It is our responsibility to uplift nursing as a field,” she says.

With over 30,000 newly licensed nurse in the country, some countries like New Zealand began to raised controversial issues like the decreasing credibility of the quality of nursing education in the Philippines. Neither this proposition were true nor the nursing council of new zealand is misinformed, it is the obligation of every licensed nurse to prove to the world how competent filipino nurses are; for New Zealand nursing council is also in the position to accept registration of the highest standard of international nurses. May we surpass their expectations and successfully meet one of their requirements: the bloody english test which hinders thousands of filipinos from achieving final registration. As a licensed nurse (May 1997 NLE), i have successfully met the requirements of the nursing council of New Zealand and I take pride in the quality of nursing education and experience of my country. May we continue to uphold these noble ideals! Mabuhay ang mga bagong bayani ng pilipinas!

My wife just finished practical nursing in one of the best school in ontario. She got a diploma with distinction, after of only a month of reviewing at home with the aid of books and sample reviewers, she took the registration exam of college nurses of ontario and she passed it after that she was hired and got 25 bucks per hour.

Another controversial issue has been raised by the nursing council of New Zealand about the second courser nurses that are not qualified to be a registered nurses but rather only recognized as caregivers.
This is such a discrimination since second courser nurses also studied nursing just the way the regular graduates did. The only difference is that they are done with the minor subjects in nursing and are focusing only the major subjects when they studied nursing.
All of these students should be given a fair chance to prove their knowledge, skills and attutide. To question the standards of the Philippines in terms of its academic in nursing is a way to belittle the Filipino people as a whole.

I am hoping a law will be passed improving the salary of our local nurses employed in hospitals, both in private and public or we will continue sending our nurses abroad to the detriment of our own people. I heard that inprivate hospitals, entry level of nurses are usually volunteers only with no pay or minimal allowance only. This practice should be stopped. Doctors are paid so much and doctors cannot function by themselves alone, they needed assistants to effectively do their jobs, the nurses, hence, this should be look into. I am not a nurse, I am a civil engineer, why not make the entrance level/salary the same for those regulated profession. I hope some people could lobby this matter to congress and not just go on rally without really legitimate issues except to make a bad light of our country in the international scene.

i just want to share my reaction on the news I read “. . . .nursing test rate alarming”. it was said that the below 50% passing rate is alarming. I think the general passing rate of almost all board examinations is below 50% why the alarm? I am not saying that it should not be but I believe the most pressing concern now is how can these board passers landed into a decent job? how can their respective associations help them? how can concerned agencies help and assist these human capital gain experiences to be more competitive in foreign market? these new nurses need jobs, Filipinos need jobs!

What’s your point, conrad n? showing off? As much as I appreciate that you are proud of your wife, other nurses earn equal or even more than that, no point in being crude and specifying how much your money-maker makes!

Congratulations to all the new registered nurses in our country!!! The big question now is this, where are we going to put all these new RN’s? Certainly, they want to be employed right away; however, with the numerous yearly passers of RN board in our country, permanent employment in the hospitals in our country is hard to get by. And given the chance to be employed in one of the hospitals in the country, the wages that many nurses earn are not reciprocal to the work that they do. There’s an enormous disparity in wages and compensations which is beyond belief! What most RN earn in a month as compared to contractual employees in let’s say SM outlets are not as far as one might think or in other words, they are pretty much in the same bracket.
But to new RN’s out there do not lose hope; this is just the reality of things in our country. It’s really up to each one of you to make the most of your hardly earned degree as an RN. After all the reasons why many of you took nursing as your course is probably because of the hope of a greener pasture outside this hopeless country. Well good luck to all of you.
This brings us now to the question of whether or not one should volunteer in the hospital. Definitely, one should do so and this is highly recommended. However, many questions have come up as far as volunteering is concerned. One of which is why do hospitals demand payment for one to volunteer in their hospital? Just imagine there are some hospitals charging a volunteer nurse to pay three thousand pesos for 3 months of volunteer work for just to gain “experience”. Is the PNA or any other government agency aware of this dubious practice? It seems that these hospitals are taking advantage of these numerous nurses out there who want to gain experience in their field. Again, this should be investigated and should be given proper fora of discussion or “rationalization” as many nurses would say.

to james flores: i’m glad that you passed the nz exam. i’m just wondering if filipino nurses in nz organize themselves to help other filipino nurses get a bearing of transitioning from pi to nz. i pose the same question to other filipino nurses in other countries. what help do you provide to newly arrived filipino nurses so that they are ready to face whatever challenges they need to confront with. my mother, a nurse, migrated to chicago and was supported by former nurses from mental hospital mandaluyong. they organized into a non-profit group to welcome all families. it was a great experience for us growing up knowing other families were also watching over us.

I think it is better if most nursing schools screen the students who want to take up nursing. Nursing is not for everybody.
Here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, only students with an average of 85% and above are admitted in Nursing. Nurses are still in demand here. The salary is about $35/hr. A student who finished third year but did not graduate can work as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). Working as an LPN is not bad, but the salary is about $10 lower than the salary of an RN per hour.
