HERE’S an interesting blog called Chuva of the Chenes maintained by the “nawawalang anak ni Gretchen Barreto at Jestoni Alarcon.”
In her most recent blog entry, the author waxes nostalgic over Cubao billboards.
Excerpt:
When I was a kid, we frequented Cubao a lot, usually on Sundays to shop or window-shop at Rustan’s, SM, Ali Mall, and Marikina Shoe Expo (now Cubao X). Whenever we needed to buy something or we needed to visit our pedia (Medispecialist Center 2nd floor Rustan’s), we went to Cubao. When my erpat’s with us, we would go to Perfect Pitch and all those music shops in the area. A trip to Cubao is usually punctuated with flavored popcorn from Goldilocks at Rustan’s (love apple popcorn!). Cubao is very much intertwined with my childhood; it’s a place of nostalgia and of good memories.
One particular Cubao fixture that is close to my aorta and vena cava is the gigantic movie billboard area found along the intersection of Aurora Blvd and EDSA. Unlike today’s printed billboards, these were made by hand, painted by artists.

hmmm… what does Cubao means to me?
It means Fiesta Carnival and 3M pizza on our birthdays…
we’d go to SM, Alimall, Plaza Fair to buy schools stuff. We seldom go to Cubao beacuse we live in Antipolo which is quite far, so a day in Cubao means a lot to us…
And yes, I miss those movies billboards too. I remember how we used to “okray” those billboards because the nose were always crooked… well, those days are gone…
Have a nice day!

Hhmm.. When I was in the elementary days, when we are still living in Project 4, QC, my Cousind and I frequented Cubao. We often sneak out from home and walk straight to Araneta Center. I remember we were not allowed to enter Ali Mall because we’re only wearing a Spartan rubber slippers. The Security Guard told us to just go back and wear at least rubber shoes. LOLs. We just roam around the area, watch the rides in the Fiesta Carnival (now being occupied by Shopwise), because we don’t have money to get a ticket for a ride, hehehe. And every Christmas, we’re being taken to the COD to watch moving mannequins show at the building’s facade. Now the show was already moved to Greenhils. Also most of the time, we are treated to a Circus show at the Araneta Coliseum, happening every Christmas season until early January. Now already a lot has been changed, new Malls.. and a new high rise condominium is on the works. When should I ever come and visit Cubao again? Or when should I ever visit the Philippines again?
