Filipino blogger renews call for newspaper boycott

09/04/07

Posted under Causes

FILIPINO blog Tingog.com, which previously called for the resignation of Filipino lifestyle columnist Malu Fernandez, has renewed calls to boycott the newspaper she writes for.

“Here it is, our stand, because Manila Standard Today has chosen to hide behind their term ‘protocol’ and issue a pardon to their most beloved columnist for all The Filipinos to see. This is a call to boycott, for the irresponsible behavior of Manila Standard Today, they have chosen to pass up the option of doing the right thing, and essentially show their true colors and the standards they are upholding,” the blog said.

INQUIRER.net called the Manila Standard Today for a reaction to the boycott call but was told the paper was not issuing any statement.

Tingog was one of the more vocal blogs against Fernandez for a travel article she wrote for People Asia magazine and the newspaper that sparked outrage among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Her earlier travel piece, which appeared in the June edition of the magazine and later in newspaper, recounted her encounter with some Filipino overseas workers while flying economy class.

“I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them,” Fernandez wrote in the article.

In quick time, the blogosphere was filled with posts denouncing the article as bigoted, hateful, and discriminatory.

Although she published a letter of apology that also announced her resignation because of what she called threats, hate blogs, and personal insults.

However, Fernandez resumed her Manila Standard Today column last Monday.

“This is also to Malu Fernandez, which from the very beginning was obviously insincere, has indeed showed her insincerity by having Manila Standard Today make the decision for her to stay. As you know, Manila Standard did not accept her resignation. But why doesn’t she just step down? As is the case with individuals who are truly never repentant, they see no need for any accountability,” Tingog.com wrote.

“We are not to blame for this escalation. All we wanted in the first place was a fair shake for this story to get some coverage, for the involved parties to issue apologies, and for Malu Fernandez to be made accountable by being fired from both publications. But Manila Standard, was given a chance, and they blew it. They not only blew it, but they did harm to the many individuals who were hurt by the article of Malu Fernandez and her response in her Manila Standard Today column,” Tingog.com added.

Meanwhile, Anton De Leon, a former journalist and blogger who lives in Dubai, said the recent move to still allow Fernandez to resume writing her column has weakened some people’s “faith in our institutions.”

Calling himself a blogspot humorist, De Leon lamented, “as if nothing happened, here she is in her acerbic wit writing style talking about ugly things on your dresser.”

“I guess all this concerted effort to clamor has gotten us nowhere close to a whimper. Yep, we have achieved nothing except the fact that we have made her a byword. Well, it all goes downhill from here,” he said in his recent Slap Happy blog entry.

De Leon is a senior communications executive for a media conglomerate.

Boycott the paper. Maybe if their circulation drops then they’ll probably listen and do the right thing

Cris

iboycott na rin pati mga advertisers nila… spread the news na lang natin esp. sa pamilya natin sa pinas.
talagang sinusubukan tayong mga ofw…
united we stand… mabuhay tayo..

Malu Fernandez should resign or stopped
writing for such topics as OFW are really
heroes,As a seaman for 25 yrs alam ko ang sinasabi ya.But OFW must be respected ,praise for helping the country and family. Yes kahit mabaho pa iyan or what, i use axe ,so what, i can afford to
buy yung lahat expensive perfume but i
prefer to buy cheap ones because my family needs the money. Tutuo rin their are unruly OFWs escpecially on plane but
they need to be respected.I think this time lahat the OFW or seamen must react
the way it should lets boycott Manila standard.Eh mukhang pangit naman c Malu Fernandez na iyan.

well, lets put it this way,the reason why malu was still writing a column at Manila Standard is because she brings controversy, and when theres controversy there’s money, and thats how Manila Standard stands for, they are basking on the controversy to make money, they should rename there paper Manila Sub Standard featuring the devalicious Swine as the Daily cover.Manila Standard shame on you people,to the eye’s of all the OFW’s who worked so hard to help the philippine economy in many ways, your standard went down as low as the pig sty where one of your beloved writer named malu belongs,to the elite class of fatty swine

ennko

SHit happens… most of the times.

hector

All OFW should send a strong message to the management of Manila Standard that we are united and we condemn their action for letting Malu continue her writing in their newspaper. If they ignore our stand we will campaign for the boycott of their newspaper.

Josie

For all the OFWs in the middle east and all over the world, let us unite and make our presence felt in the entire blogsphere. We can not allow them to just ignore us and let Malu Fernandez continue writing as if nothing happened.

Kickazzmomma

Sta banana! How we become so callous and shameless indeed. Just almost everybody in the business of public service has become so arrogant and so above the masses to even own up to a blatant mistake. There is no more “delicadeza”, sense of accountability and no more sense of right and wrong, no iota of humility. You see, Manila Standard Today did not feel that Malu Fernandez should resign. The half-felt obligatory apology from Malu may probably have been enough for the “bloodthirsty mob” as far as the Manila Standard is concerned. After all, Malu might have been telling the truth that she got politician relatives and that Manila Standard is scared? (Hahahaha…what a funny thought!)

Manila “Standard” Today deserves a boycott. Let’s tell our families not to buy it.

Where are their standards?

Bert

Nothing new to this call by tingog.com, the first person who suggested a call to boycott was Malu Fernandez herself. Couple of days after her much-talk-about article came out in the Manila Standard, she wrote again, in answer to a hate email about her article, Malu said to the complaining email; “….if what I write offends you, just stop reading.” See? She said ’stop reading’, meaning we should stop buying the Manila Standard. For, surely, there is no better logic than to say that no Manila Standard, no more reading of any acerbic wit from Ms. Malu Fernandez. If only everybody had seriously taken her suggestion at that time, it could have save us all those vent up emotions and manhours lost in typing those hate blogs and emails against Malu Fernandez. To all who felt insulted, and that include me, my honest sympathy to all you guys and dolls. But we have to accept the fact existing in our society, as pointed out by Malu-that the higher classes look down upon the lower classes. Class prejudice after all is not confine in the Philippines but a universal anomally. I can’t fault those that are hurt by Malu’s insult to throw the insult back to her with more ferocity, but it should not be much of a surprise to any of us to see a burgis person such as Malu to display such kind of discriminatory attitude towards the dh. If she could write that way in her article about the lower class, imagine how she could be treating her dh and family driver at her home, God forbid.

Simple Pinoy

This Malu thing is getting out of hand. The more blogs appearing everywhere the more she becomes notorious. But this notoriety is probably helping the circulation of their erstwhile seldom talked about magazine & newspaper. We may never know but the controversy may be helping their circulation.

The best thing to do is simply stop buying any of their publications. This way, the owners will feel where it hurts the most: their revenue. Besides, I would assume that most of those calling for the boycott are not regular buyers of the Manila Standard.

As for Malu, well, maybe the storm may have taught her a valuable lesson in writing that hell hath no fury than the OFWs scorned. If she hadn’t and persists on using her acerbic wit to denigrate other sectors, then, let us just allow the future to write the appropriate footnote to her journalistic career. No amount of arm twisting can probably change an incorrigible intellectual and social upstart.

Tim

I have not actually read the Fernandez article in question, and so will not join the call for a boycott of her and the MST.
However, some people do not have the finesse to express feelings of sympathy without being sarcastic and sounding offensive.

It could be that what she actually meant was that she felt so downcast at the thought of being surrounded by countrymen who have to leave loved ones and the country to work for jobs abroad that the locals in that country they are heading to wouldn’t touch or consider below their dignity to do.

Perhaps Ms. Fernandez knew that most of these cheaply perfumed, chattering countrymen were actually highly educated who will soon be working jobs meant for high school undergraduates in the country they are headed to.

I don’t know, really.

But I do know that more than Ms. Fernandez, a large pile of the blame should be thrown onto the desk, shoulders, and persons of those in government who ought to be working to ensure that today’s generation of professional Filipinos, as well as the coming ones, no longer feel the need to go abroad to be able to pursue their dreams.

Manila Standard deserve a boot to the head.

Jon Rey

For being unrepentant for their deeds, I would reserve a Divine Curse on her and the newspaper. May the powers of the Heavens make their lives a miserable hell from today and hereafter. Amen to that!

Markus

No need to boycott Manila Standard as there are NO READERS. What we should do is appeal to advertisers of Manila Standard (if there are any at all) to stop advertising in this reader-less magazine. They can’t act like nothing happened. I agree. Malu Fernandez must be laughing at the situation now which propelled her to national fame. Just hope she gets enough gas to mix in with all her fat and explode!!!!

kikineekulafu

what da hell is Manila Standard? I never heard of that newspaper anyway…so basically i’ve unknowingly boycotted them already… To hell with MS and MF…

juntzo

I’m now a former reader of Manila Standard! One at a time… then they’ll feel it. Soon they’ll be able to count their readers on their piggy toes only!

“Sta. Banana!” Kickazzmomma, that’s hilarious! (^^,) Sadly, the fact that Malu Fernandez is still writing despite what she’s done isn’t. I’m incensed at Manila Standard for their obvious disregard of the outrage that callous bigot stirred, and even more enraged at said callous bigot for displaying her insincerity to the world. How can she write like nothing’s happened? She plays at remorse for effect and then goes back to what she was doing.

Disgusting.

Cesar

I am for Boycott of Manila Walang Standard Newspaper. They don’t deserve to have circulation. They lost even the remaining few of their readers. Their continued ignoring of the OFWs clamor for them to axe malu fernandez speak a lot about their stand about the issue.

linda

Goodness me” Manila Standard” your columnist lady is racist to her own country colleagues. In fact I didnt see the column but I would like to submit my comments. If your racist columnist was that annoyed to mingle with some filipino travellers who unfortunately may not be in the same category as her, feeling squashed like sardine in a can. I would suggest you book a ticket in a first class or business class seat so you can have your valued privacy and not be bothered about noises other passengers are creating or PERHAPS BUY YOURSELF A PLANE. These people could be enjoying themselves to meet other filipinos as well as feeling the excitement of going back home to be with their families. Thank God I dont get a chance to sit next to this racist lady who appears to have high head and nose up just because she is a columnist…..BIGGGGG DEALLLLL. There must be something definitely wrong in her or maybe her plate is full….if you know what I mean. I dont care if this lady belongs to the upper class. You may have a big mind but small heart. There are so many interesting topics you could have written about rather than come up with something nasty. The newspaper publication itself should have prompted this writer and could have stopped the publication. I know I can understand where she was coming from that it would be nice to give due respect to others as well as take them too into consideration but by gee, dont be so particular, not even worth mentioning the perfume scent they are spraying on themselves. Its not your business at all not even as a writer. Next time you write condition your mind first so you dont stepover people shoes.

The sad truth is she degraded her kababayans who make this country economically afloat. The sadder truth is that her expensive taste does not match her ugly face. Let us ignore her like she does not exist: boycott the paper.

ormocanon

No, I’m not going to hop on the bandwagon and boycott some website or newspaper just because it did not fire its social-climbing lifestyle columnist who insulted OFW’s in her column.

As the late Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent…”

I’m wary of moralists like Nick of tingog.com and his crusade against the Manila Standard Today.

I’m an ofw. I’m not so offended. She had an opinion which is her right. Her mistake was that she made it public. Free speech people. Dumb or smart opinions, she still has the right to say it. If boycotting doesn’t work with the paper. Make a T-shirt.

Manila Standard Today publishes what? 10,000 copies a day? But tackling Malu and them was like shooting fish in a barrel for most of those braveheart bloggers out there.

But who popularized the term toilet bowl cleaners of the world?

Leeza

Just read about the Malu F. brohaha. I’ve never felt a sudden deluge of different emotions all at the same time after reading what Ms. Malu F. thinks about her kababayans. Indeed it is very sad when people have nothing in left in their heart but hatred. It makes them unable to love and respect others. It really must be lonely for her. If there are people around her now, they are not her friends. No one in his right faculties would even be 5 meters near that woman. I am angry but i feel more pity for her. Sad, truly sad….

Kabayan

Yes spawnofsatan Malu has a right to air her opinion and as such the rest of those who find her article insulting has a right to air their opinions regarding Malu themselves - which is quite a lot indeed. ;)

Dave

I find it really funny that 499,000 OFW’s and expats could possibly get so riled up over a statement about their cheap perfume, just shows how self sentered they are, mention their cheap perfume, color of their socks, make/model of the car they drive, brand of their clothing, grrrrrr thats personal and they will not stand for that!
compare that to extra judicial killings, corruption in politics, crumbleing infrastructure you could hear a mouse whiper its so quiet, why? not personal enough!
another case is there are 500,000 OVA’s out of that less than 60,000 decided to vote in the last election, why? not personal enough, lets find some excuses, any will do.
But really there are none because, like in the USA, they do the same thing, don’t vote, got more important things to do, this is why politicians there don’t even canvas the second largest immigrant population in the USA for votes, it is a waste of time and money.
Now out of those same 500,000 OVA’s talk about their cheap perfume like Malu did and 499,000 cram the web and the newspapers in protest, got that? less than 50,000 care to vote 499,000 care to raise holy cain about someone talking about their cheap perfume, why? its personal!

I dread the thought that Malu Fernandez may actually be enjoying her notoriety right now. Where before she was completely unknown, now she gained fame - even of the malevolent kind. Tsk! Tsk!

Yes…we are all righteously correct to feel indignant. But let’s leave her alone already because otherwise Manila Standard would feel that the more we talk about her, the popular they become.

Malu Fernandez must first read Jessica Zafra, Kitty Go, Dr. Holmes, or listen to Mo Twister so that she will understand what is “acerbic wit”.

Or, I hope she will focus on improving her physical appearance instead, like what Ethel Booba did. You know, she can do so many things to make her life a bit happier without insulting others.

Kickazzmomma

Guys, let’s not mention the name of “THAT GIRL FROM MANILA STANDARD, at baka magka-career na totoo nga.

PLEASE JOIN ME NOT TO EVER MENTION HER NAME AGAIN PARA MAWALA NA SA SIRKULASYON ANG BABAENG ITO.

Anyway she was an unknown before, so she must be left as an UNKNOWN.

Hayaan mo na ang nanay nya kumastigo sa kanya dahil sa masama nyang ugali at ipinahiya nya ang angkan nya. Okay?
