Filipino bloggers react to ‘Desperate Housewives’ remark

Posted under Issues, TV, Videos

FILIPINO bloggers are reacting to a remark made by one of the characters in a recent episode of television series “Desperate Housewives.”

While many condemned the remark as a racist slur and called for a boycott of the show, others suggested that people write to the producers of the show to complain.

The Filipino bloggers were reacting to a remark by the character Susan Mayer Delfino, played by Teri Hatcher, who was objecting to being checked by a doctor until she was sure of the doctor’s credentials.

“Can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines,” Delfino told her gynecologist during a scene in a hospital where she went to ask why her menstrual cycle was off for several months. (Editor’s note: Click on Ruben Nepales’ blog post to hear an MP3 file of the dialogue between Delfino and her doctor.)

Filipino blogger Mike in Manila agreed that the remark was unfair and racist, and that every Filipino had the right to get upset.

“So yes, do complain do get upset and do remark that they should do something about it to make it up to the millions of nurses and doctors from the Philippines. Or just not watch the show- boycott it. But this is hardly a national insult more of a call to DECS [education department], DOH [health department], and, Medical Schools, to awaken and be aware of the need to clarify issues past of problems. A call to be aware of the problem which Mr. Nadal does, and makes others at ABC TV aware. It is also an image problem that needs to be addressed by CHED the DECS and others like the DOH. ‘Di po ba?” the blogger wrote.

A scandal hit the nursing board examinations last year after some examinees exposed alleged massive cheating.

An e-mail from a certain Kevin Nadal, a Filipino performance artist, is now circulating on the Internet encouraging Filipinos to sign an online petition to protest the remarks against Filipino doctors.

“This type of derogatory remark is not only unnecessary and hurtful, but is also unfounded, considering the presence of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the health care industry… To belittle the education, experience, or value of Filipino Americans in health care is disrespectful and plain and simply ignorant,” Nadal wrote in his e-mail message now being passed on by other Filipinos through mailing lists and blogs.

“As Filipino Americans, we need to band together to ensure that this type of hateful message is not allowed to continue on our television and radio airwaves,” he added.

A search on Google would indicate the reactions of the Filipino bloggers.

Filipino doctor Martin Bautista, who practices in the US, said that Filipino physicians are in an uproar over the episode of “Desperate Housewives.”

In his blog entry “Who’s Desperate?” Bautista revealed that Filipino doctors in the US have called for a boycott of the television show and demanded an apology from the producers of the show.

A class action suit is also being weighed, he said.

“I totally understand the outrage considering all the racial, academic and financial obstacles we all had to hurdle. But let’s examine this closer. Do I expect to lose a single patient in rural Oklahoma as a result of this comment? Are we Filipino doctors irreparably harmed? I don’t think we doctors worked and studied very hard just to become excessively threatened by insensitive and mediocre scriptwriting. We should have a fair idea of how much we are truly worth.

“I admit I used to be awed by Harvard and company. Not anymore. I now know it isn’t all in the school, no matter how plush their classrooms are and how much cutting-edge technology is available in the laboratories or even in faculty members brimming with degrees. A physician’s competence ultimately depends on one’s capacity to learn arising from a deep compassion to care for our patients,” he continued.

“So while I am not happy about the comment I will continue to be at the endoscopy unit at 6:45 am and see patients the whole day and get on with my practice and give the best patient care that I can. I don’t intend to be bothered by those who will allow DH to influence their choice of physicians,” he said.

The Palace has said that it will ask the show producers to apologize for the racial slur in the popular US television show.

Filipino blogger Misteryosa also did not hold back words.

“Filipinos are talented and smart (but kinda stupid, yeah), and I can’t understand why a show like Desperate Housewives would stoop so low as to offhandedly throw an insult just like that,” Misteryosa wrote in her blog.

Other bloggers provided a link to the YouTube video clip of the controversial remark made by Hatcher’s character.

Relax everybody, be calm. Because the more you scramble about this insult, the more it will splatter on our faces. There is only one solution-get even. We make one movie that would insult American medics in the same manner. Better we make it two movies. Or, insert a drama in one of our top-rating TV shows that would insult American doctors in the same manner. Afterwhich, we call it quits. Ok?

WALA YAN DOON SA NAPANOOD KO NOONG ISANG ARAW!!!… TIGNAN NYO ITONG EXAMPLES:

1. For record China invented civilization in the East, but they also invented corruption…

2. …do you know Evelyn Catherine Silagon? … So you don’t have a daughter by her, you have a son…

3. Who’s your travel agent? … I’d like to be your travel agent!

4. Abalos just said you were lying under oath. Is he also lying under oath when he forgot or cannot recall bribe offer?

HINDI BA NAKAKATAWA? Sana magkaroon ulit ng inquiry at ipatawag itong si Terry Hatcher “in aid of legislation” para matawa ulit ako!

I was also offended with this scene. Me myself is working here professionaly in the USA but not in the medical field. I observed that some not all Americans are so arrogant and they think they are the best…”Thats what they think…

JED

Well, the truth hurts.

People won’t make comments unless they have bad experience/s.

Why do we react that way? If we made comment/s (even worst comments to Americans)they don’t react that way. Let’s be professionals.

Learn from it. Prove that we are unique and gifted individuals.

I think the scriptwriter of the show has a sad experience in Filipino medical practicioners…but as a full-blooded Filipino, I am also upset of the comment…i agree that it is a wake-up call for all of us to be serious with our craft and prove to the world that we are worth to be respected.

let’s just wait for the explanation from the producer of this program regarding their script. be patient.

I am glad, I am not leaving in America which every Filipino aspire to go. To all my countrymen who want to go to US to work and live. Do you want to live in a discriminating country like this? There are lot of countries were they value the contribution and hardship of the Filipino.

probinsiyana

First, that is America. No matter what Pinoys are aliens in that country even if we waved our green cards or licenses, or American citizanship. We are not white. What do you expect? That is not your home country. We are all aliens in America. We are colored. And America will never see us beyond our brown colors. A color and race below them. And in our lingo “bahay mo ba iyon.”

Dr. Phil

Terri Hatcher has also a responsibility on the line that she is suppose to say. It’s obvious that such line is derogatory to the Phil medical profession. This show is nothing but garbage with sexual undertones featuring chorizo sucking airheads.

louisa

It is but natural to react to such a comment being a Filipino. But let us talk facts. It is common knowledge that when one practices in the US, no matter what skin color, one has to take the same entrance exams; and if he or she makes it, one has to undergo same training in a specialized field whether white or black or brown or yellow. Therefore, anybody can be competent as white people given the opportunity. So folks, lets not dwell on this matter and move on. Let us show them, how so small a country like ours can have so much talent, intelligence and value. Go Philippines!

it’s funny how we filipinos overreact to statements made in the films or series. Let’s face it. That’s how other people view us. It reflects the total race how we are perceived. Let’s stop reacting and work on how we can change the image. We have lots of problems to solve at home. It’s funny how we can easily react to this issue even with the zte scandal at hand rocking this entire nation and tarnishing again our image. It’s always us destroying our this persona & yet we havent done something about it. Let’s change & continue proving. It’s a long road ahead. Good luck to us all

they should never had included that line! did anyone even thought that THAT was funny?

this teri hatcher bruhaha has taken the country by storm (marami na mga tayong bagyo!)for me, personally, it is the responsibility of the scripwriter(siguro he/she don’t have a good impression of the Philippines). but as an actress, hatcher, should have been very sensitive on her dialogues. siguro may say siya sa kanyang mga sasabihin and has a right to change some of those phrases. they know that their show has a huge following. o baka, they need “desperate” dialogues to view their “desperate” show. wish ko lang, a Filino doctor would come her way just when she needed a “desperate” touch!hahaha!

pinoyarts.blogspot.com

“The producers of ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ABC Studios are sorry for saying OUTRIGHT and CLEAR that Filipino Medical Schools and those who graduated from there SUCK. There was intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines because we ASSUMED they would just suck because CLAIRE DANES went there to shoot her movie that tanked and she told us that people eat cockroaches in the psycho hospital where she shot. As leaders in broadcast diversity, we are committed to presenting sensitive and respectful images of all communities featured in our programs that’s why we read the many interviews Claire Danes gave out about the state of medical schools in the Philippines. We will send you our scripts to show you our writers even made footnotes about the authenticity of our research. So again we are sorry for saying that Filipino Med Schools suck because we assumed they just did, and we thought it would be funny if we made a joke about it. We do not take responsibility if Filipinos, doctors or not, did not find it funny. We are not responsible for the sense of humor of intelligent people. We assume our audience is not. So we are sorry that we are not sorry. Get over it, move on, we have billions of dollars to make. You’re in our way.”

I think Teri Hatcher is one of the sexiest actresses I’ve had the hots for her since Superman. Anyways what she says I don’t think was meant to offend anyone it was apart of the script. I’ve lived in America and been called a lot names lots of times but I learn to live with it. Yes I do believe that the Philippines has some of world’s greatest health professionals. If you have lived in America as I have and you know that black are even much worst insulting than what Teri Hatcher’s charcter said. Although I don’t watch Desperate Housewives. But I know just by living in America for a number of years something like that will not insult me. Take a look at what happen in Louisiana last month Jenna 6 case where a white person was beaten up by 6 black high school kids. In some area’s in America strong racial tensions are strong but there are people in America who learn to get along with all people of all races. Going to a school and being the only Filipino in that New Jersey school yes I was made fun of because of my race. But whatever they called me made me strong. But I have many white friends and all friends of different backgrounds.

Christian Allarde

Also what is so racist about this comment it’s not like saying nigger or if you were a Jewish person you’d show them a swastika sign. Or what’s really racist are Ku Klux Klan those people who go under white sheets and then burn crosses in front of black people’s homes not black people’s homes if you are not white they don’t will do that. Or during the WW2 and Vietnam war there were people in America who called Asian people gooks. Again to the many people who are in the health professionals yes you are one of the world’s brightest instead of let this be insulting let it light the fuel to do well.

EFabros

So Pinoys around the world unite!
Junk or don’t watch “Desperate Housewives” & all shows with Teri Hatcher.

nothing racial about it. what she said was just the truth. even when it really hurts. rather than over react and have thing bruhaha blown out of proportion, why not focus on the real issue on the situation of medical schools instead? after all, if the schools in the Philippines were as they claim to be then this “racial slur” wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Well, She should blame the American system if there are any practicing doctor in the US which was not properly screen by the Goverment. In the UK as far as I know you need to pass the eye of the needle if you are coming from a different country specially from the Philippines.

Oh one more thing if this show is made in the UK and it’s being shown regulary, it will definitely be banned on the following day. As the Goverment are more sensitive to racial descrimination.

well doctor and nurse when teri hatcher get sick give him a poison, i sure (with million of nurses around the globe ) one of filipino nurse will be attending him…

It is a common knowledge that for a few thousand pesos one can buy a degree in Philippines. I believe that Filipinos should take it easy on this one least of course you want that issue to bomeerang in your face. Just look at the present occupant of the Malacanang Palace. Illegal President equals illegal diploma equals corrupt society equals immorallity. Add to that is the Catholic institutions evil ways.

Filipinos should clean their acts first and clean their own backyard of illegals and do start with Arroyo if you guys want respect from the world if not from your own.

It is so easy for us to re-act to such comedic script when the evidence is their in our face.

I always believe that the Filipinos deserve the kind of government they have for allowing of course such things to happen and for allowing their religion and the media for controlling their minds.

Time to clean our backyard now….

P.S.

Mga Kababayan,

Nag-sorry na daw!

Kaya lang ginamit daw ang speech ni Gloria Arroyo…the infamous “I AM SORRY”.

In fact, they hired Nora Aunor daw in the states to deliver the I am Sorry speech..

Oh di ba pag may “Hello Garci” may ginhawa

I also share the same feelings about racial discrimination. I don’t watch Desperate Housewives but something like this shouldn’t be passed.

When I forwarded some petition going around the net to my friend, he raised a very good point when he said that he will not join the campaign. This is what he replied to me. To quote:

“With all due respect, why do we react this way when American shows take cracks at ‘professional Filipinos,’ but not when they take a crack at ‘Filipino whores?’

Every Mad TV episode I’ve seen always has a ‘Filipino whore’ joke on them. Why don’t we get offended?

Is it because they’re not professionals? That they do not have the correct pedigree to be seen as dignified? As far as I am concerned, these ‘whores’ are the same as those ‘professionals’ that were slighted by Teri Hatcher’s line - they go to the US to
pursue the American dream. While their means might not be appropriate, they just want to make a living.

And more important is the fact that these ‘whores’ are Filipinos as well. If we can’t even feel angry that they’re being slighted every week by a very annoying Cable show, then we’re being racist as well by disowning our own.

Until you guys also seek apology from Mad TV and any other crummy US show (Family Guy, for one) for slighting the Filipino race, regardless of stature, I’m not joining your campaign.”

Ed

Mga bugok sino bang tao walang color?Besides ang kahihiyan will always linger in the Americans until their lousy death and Teri is one of them if she is American, for everybody knows how this white skins annihilated the Redskins.Search where those bastards cantoned the true owners of the land of America.l don’t give a damn to these white skins, for me the are nothing.ln the Philippines if you are not ignorant like Teri their is no need for a doctor for your monthly perod it will just fade away after three days or so.Even for free l will not set foot on that God forsaken place,America.

Well…not just because of one racial slur we will codemn all americans for being nasty and prejudice. My family lived upstate New York for 4 yrs and we were treated nicely and were special to the whites because we were different from them. Regarding our med schools in Pinas their could be some truth to it.Sometimes the truth hurts…

Dear Bloggers,

04th October 2007

Will anyone kindly please verify or assist me on this matter.

I have received a text message from a certain Atty. Mariano M. Chavez of the PGMA Foundation whose cell number is 09286917450 claiming that my mobile number has been randomly selected. I have apparently won 1 million pesos from the foundation.

Below is the text message.

“Congratulations! Your cell # had won 1M pesos during the anniversary of the PGMA foundation raffle draw. DTI permit # 2578 Series 2007 Please Contact Atty Mariano M. Chavez at 09286917450 for details and on how to claim it. Thank you.”

I wonder if this got anything to do with my criticism of the illegitimate regime of Mrs. Arroyo. Not to mention the evil the religion it represents.

Well, my paintings are for sale but not my vote.

If this text message is true, will any representative from Philippine General Hospital claim this in my behalf as my donation to your institution?

Thank you.

And here’s the reality. It’s a double-edge sword attack on poor Filipinos masterfully crafted by the super-rich corporate America. Let me begin by telling you that ABC is literally controlled by the govt. so if you are expecting any kind of intervention by the govt., or planning of political noise, you’ll be disappointed.

Even if Desperate Housewives enjoys the top spot rating on last Sunday night shows, it was still a big drop compared to their last year’s ratings. I meant there are still reasons to believe that they will still do something like this to improve its ratings at the expense of poor hardworking Filipino overseas. If the Filipino nurses episode was shown before Sunday night, then they achieved what they wanted - to revive their deteriorating rating. If it was shown last Sunday night, then they are yet to enjoy the big surge in ratings as a result of this free publicity, courtesy of the 4,000,000 Fil-Ams and more if you add the Filipinos outside of the U.S. and they did it just in time, when live-plus-7 ratings come out in late October, the most important rating of the year.

The other edge of the sword is when you go to mypetitiononline.com/FilABC to sign the petition protesting the said discriminating show, you‘ll notice that the add by google on the top of the page sells Desperate Housewives DVD, and every once in a while, the ad right next to it changes from Dating Filipinas to Criminal Lawyers etc.. They knew exactly what’s going to happen, the marketing genius of evil America at work. I felt the vigilante on me is slowly transforming into a pawn.

Nevertheless, we should still unite and demand a PUBLIC apology. We want their apology on the air and on CNN and not just ABS-CBN.

dennis

this is an insult not to the filipino people but to the americans! our education system is pattered from them. almost all the textbook - written by americans - made in usa. no wonder british is saying don’t compare what you learned from your country!

Jibrael

I really feel that that was a racist slur and Teri Hatcher’s show should be banned in our country for at least six months.

But we have to look also for the reasons why she said that unfortunate racial slur.

Perhaps the reason Teri said that, was she got a very bad impression of our country from the media. But we cannot blame either the media since we know that there are so many scandals in our country not only in the board examinations given by PRC.

Our Commission on Higher Education, the PRC, Health Department, etc should address the mentioned problems to prevent future racial remarks against the Filipino people.

Dona

Your right “bakal” I stayed for a couple of Months in UK and I can say that British are very sensitive to the the feeling of others, specially tackling racism. When you walk on the street and you say that you are Filipino you can be proud of yourself because without the Filipino nurses working with them. their nurses is not sufficient enough to service Briton. I have a British friend who went to the Philippines just to have a medical treatment, imagine they believe in tthe skills and capacity of the Filipino Doctors

desperado

why are we so desperate to react to teri’s remarks? did we hear the chinese furiously reacting to a statement by a distinguished senator when she tagged china of inventing corruption? there was no chou, li, tan, chan or even high government execs at the level of ermita or duque who instigate people to protest. perhaps the line delivered by teri was a backlash of the negative images in the government like corruption, bribery, cheating, etc.

uspinoy

Whether or not the racist remark in Desperate Housewives immediately affects our medical practice, or other careers, in the US is beside the point. Racism is racism and it must be challenged whenever and whereever it arises, no matter how slight or feint it appears. Yes, even at the risk of being accused as overreacting. The med schools in the Philippines that are of questionable quality is also beside the point. Filipinos, and other foreigners for that matter, are thoroughly screened, oftentimes unreasonably, before they can practice in the US. It goes without saying that by the time a Filipino or other foreign-trained doctor gets to examine a patient in the US, like in that scene in Desperate Housewives, it doesn’t matter anymore where he or she was trained. That line is a display of ignorance of the processes involved in becoming a doctor in the US, especially concerning foreigners.

pedro

I am very proud that I am a filipino, I am not a doctor but i could have been. I have a lot of relatives who are doctors in cagayan de oro. The dialog may be inappropriate, hey it,s libertarian HOLLYWOOD. Here’s my observation to all this hullabalo specially to our corrupt leaders and bureaucrats, can they tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Desperate housewife is fantasy, 80 million filipinos leaving in poverty is more than T.V. reality. 90 percent of Filipino abroad are low paying worker beacuse we are DESPERATE FILIPINOS. People in our government are ineffective leaders and corrupt and they are worst offender than a racist tv fantasy. Our government official are wasting their time correcting something when they are the worst offender. Remember all the progress in the philippines are just cosmetics. Once I don’t see anymore Doctors and others working abroad then there is progress indeed. I don’t think corruption will go away, it’s not only a mental illness it,s in the DNA of our politician.

hypocrite

Remember the scandal with Fatima College and just last year’s Nursing Board? Filipinos please clean your act first before reacting. And by the way, isn’t there a grain of truth in what was said? And no one was prosecuted in both scandals. Can u blame them now for saying this? And why would the Palace get involved in this if not to divert attention from some issues hounding it?

I think its just natural to react this way specially if you feel that you been degraded..

Even if its true or not.. its not funny to use such sensitive comments from people who doesnt know you well. Same as what you will feel if someone make fun of your families.. its just so happen that they hit an entire nations.

I seldomly watch this shows and yeah its a little bit funny. But still on my opinion they shouldnt use such dialogue to make some jokes. Peoples are born sensitive(hope no one will disagree on me).

Forget the ‘Desperate Housewives’ protest - Comedy Central was worse
October 4th, 2007 · No Comments

If ABC - Capitol Cities -Disney, had it’s taste of Pinoy anger and petitions over the ‘treatment’ of Philippine Doctors.

AOL - Time Warner and its outfit Comedy Central are about to get a bit ‘whacked ‘ I predict, for a slur versus three women world leaders.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=jc4RhBBw0b8

So, no not once but twice fil-am’s are upset over TV shows in the U.S.A., and perhaps even in two other countries - as a comedy central report on the daily show, bashed three of the worlds leading Woman Leaders. Its older than the ‘desperate comments;…

And Comedy Central is after-all a ‘Joke-cast’ - patterned on a newscast - it is filled with Saturday Night Live - like skits - passed off as news. It has had a local spin-off Wazapx2 and some success.

But I think they were ‘unfair’ to Cory.

john

Let’s simplify this:
-It’s a racist remark.
-It’s NOT TRUE.
-The tv show is IGNORANT & doesn’t understand responsible freedom of expression. (Pity them)
-They must apologize on tv.
-Such a ‘racist culture’ MUST NOT be tolerated.
Conclusion: Choose tv shows wisely.

Joseph

Ahah! It really is hurting. What Teri Hatcher have said is really insulting to all honest, professional and bright med/nursing pros in America. But Teri may have no intention to insult them. She may have said it in reference to our (Philippines) rotten and ugly system of government.

She may have an idean or probably have a well knowledge about Recto, Manila. On how so many “diplomas” were manufactured there for only P500.00. You can choose the school you want, the course and grades and voila, you can a college graduate.

You can find them all along Recto avenue in broad daylight. Government has done nothing about it. After all, how can they prevent it when they themselves can falsify anomalous public and government documents.

We should be ashamed of this. Instead of complaining, why don’t we clean our image. And let’s begin by cleaning our nation from corruption and falsification and stop pointing dirty fingers on others.

Go Teri…..

john

yeah its just a tv show and there’s nothing serious about it. A more urgent concern perhaps is the tv show’s ignorance, unfounded remarks, and lack of understanding of responsible freedom of expression. (Too bad they’ve broadcasted their own stupidity) Nevertheless we still must show that we don’t agree with such unfair & untrue remarks.

The joke is this: Teri Hatcher’s character was not pleased with her doctor’s diagnosis. So she says “that” line. An good American doctor should have be able to get his medical degree in the US. If he had gotten it anywhere else (Nicaragua, Haiti, Thailand, or the Philippines), he must be wrong.

Let it go. We are embarrassing ourselves further.

And whoever is deleting my posts better be ashamed of himself (or herself).

Loco Moco

Pardon the grammatical errors in my last remark. I am so upset with this internet petition against Desperate Housewives that I pounded away on my keyboard.

Let it go.

Consider these: (Philippines for the past 6 years)
1. Computerized election was nullified because of anomalies. Millions of funds was lost without a trace. Thanks to Abalos.

2. Election was rigged. Thanks Garci, Hello Garci.. Gloria won by ‘1 million votes’..

3. Extraducial killings. Military and gov’t implicated. No investigation. No convictions. All cover-up

4. Nursing Board exam’s cheating was exposed. My God. even nursing exam have cheating. Why not? Our president dit it, so why can’t they?

5. NBN scandal by Abalos. Mysterman: FG, mystery woman: GMA. money lost by Juan dela cruz: US$328 million to be pocketed by them (almost).

6. Falsification of Diplomas, transcirpts and other documents are rampant in Recto Manila. Just a few hundred meters away from Malacanang Palace.

Now, look at the mirror, asked ourselves: Do we still have honor and dignity left for ourselves? We are the ones tainting and destroying our image and reputation.

To people saying that we, Filipinos, should just take it as it is, sorry I can not. To Filipinos saying that we should not be too onion-skinned about it, sorry I can not help it. We live in a world that espouses equality. This was made in a country that prides itself of tolerance, equalit, integration and freedom. So what happened to that? Where were all these things? Sorry if I can not take it because no matter where you see it, it’s wrong. It is wrong to tell someone he is inferior because nobody holds the monopoly on superiority. There will always be someone greater than you. For Filipinos, this is the reason why other people are just getting away with it. We as a people have become so apathetic about everything. We should take pride in our heritage, people and culture.
Let us show them that we are not taking this sitting down. We should make them see how angry we are. Take a stand. Do not sit on the sidelines. For one, I will not see any ABC show. Remember the ones that shed blood so that we can call ourselves Filipinos and not Spaniards, Japanese or Americans.

there was an uproar bec. we believe that most filipino doctors are doing a great job all over the world(due to competence)..
many, however, sort of over-reacted bec. its in our nature to be sensitive.
just watch lettermen, leno or conan, and how they poke fun at bush, clinton, hillary, the pope, et.al. grabe, below the belt. pero sport lang sila…bill often guests in these shows.
hindi sila sensitive.

Anie

Gosh! I just couldn’t believe this Nadal’s statement, read “On the other hand, Nadal suggested that the show’s producers and ABC executives could make a more substantial gesture than an apology, through scholarships or donations for Filipino and Filipino-Americans and community groups. Sure is another corruption in the making! Ignor! Ignor Ignor it! What a shame on us Filipinos! Disgusting!

Real Beauties

I think Terri Hatcher and the writer of that show are really hitting their menopausal age. Making that kind of remark is a clear evidence of their “kabruhahan” (cranky witch behavior) which is a symptom of that age. Anyway, I really don’t watch that show since the title itself speaks for their hopeless desperateness.

simbanana

I don’t usually respond to blogs but I was tremendously offended. Actually I am more hurt by fellow Filipinos who unfortunately find truth in the comment. be true. I just want to clarify for those who are NOT in the medical profession, THERE IS NO TRUTH THAT MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN THE PHILIPPINES ARE INCOMPETENT. I am a doctor myself and I was hurt because I sacrificed a lot of my time, effort, money to get the education I got and for someone to think it is not credible, where is the basis? I am proud to have studied here because I honestly think it is much HARDER than it is in the US. Just compare the charity hospitals of third world countries against privileged ones, where would you rather be? We most often work 108 hours a week, going 36 hours straight or even more 2-3x a week. During our 4th year in medical school we monitor the vital signs of our own patients (we don’t sleep especially if the monitoring is every 15minutes), we even measure their urine output (literally transferring it in a measuring cup and flushing it down the toilet, we don’t rely on the calibrated urine bag). We personally bring lab requests to the lab, push our own patient’s bed and at times dragging an oxygen tank altogether just to get them to x-ray or CT scan. We apply our patient’s to all possible charity donations they can get, we even dole out money even if it isn’t allowed because it is really painful to see someone suffer just because they don’t have enough. Have they ever tried ambubagging an ER patient from 1-6am (taking turns with 1 reliever) just because the patient can’t afford a mechanical ventilator?!! And since most of our patients are not financially capable, we rely on our CLINICAL EYE and not machines to diagnose patients. It may be just a show but hey, look at what’s happening? Because of that comment even our fellow Filipinos think there is truth to it, what more those who know nothing about us? It was aired to millions of people, and yeah it may be just a show, but think about it. The scriptwriter thought about that statement, the editors, producers, actors read that statement and yet no one raised an eyebrow it might be insulting? Isn’t that a problem in itself? That is why I think they should apologize because it was not a joke, it was a mistake, the key is to learn from it. And come on, regardless of race or what school you come from, we all go through the same licensure exams required for us to practice in a country, so once we pass, we have as much right to be there as anyone. For those who say we need to prove our worth, we don’t need to do that because we are worthy, any doctor who is responsible to update his knowledge and skills regularly and shows genuine compassion, respect and honesty to their patients need not be questioned of where they got their education.

isobelcandice

such remark is truly deregatory and racist … but to think of it … somehow there were some truth about buying diploma’s @ recto …. what about the nursing licensure scandal last year… i believe it is a wake up call to some govt.bodies in our country such as dept. of education and PRC ….. they should clean up their act and do the right thing …. with their failure in the system …. we those who live and work to contribute in our economy and upheld the filipino image … only be tarnished by few who’s sole can be baught by few pisetas …. it’s up to us my country man to keep our reputatation high by showing our good qualities …… TAAS NOO KABAYAN!!

Mike

I demand an apology from Mr. Nadal for his comments on The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News (10/4/2007), characterizing “people who are from the Midwest or the South who don’t even know what a Filipino is”
This is the exact type of statement that you are rebelling against, except you are a real person, not a FICTIONAL TELEVISION CHARACTER.

Anie

How low can we Filipinos go? Let’s stop being hypocrit, pretty sure the producers know the situation in the Philippines, had they not, they couldn’t come up with such a joke. Let’s face the truth that there’s diplomas for sale in Recto, Manila, the Nursing Board Exam Leak in 2006, the currently being heard case of Filipinos in Texas hiring teachers more than what’s needed, of which some credentials submitted were fake, (well glad it happened here in the US had it happened in the Philippines, they might be cleared as crystal clear). Therefore, we Filipinos are partly to be blamed. Let’s face the truth and just stop pretending otherwise, we’re gonna be where we are forever!

Josie S. Araneta

ABC should put their money where their mouth is. Words are cheap. A lot of book writers, and other media venue has been stereotyping Filipinos for the longest type, either as maids, cooks, drivers, etc., and in this case, Philippine medical schools being diploma mills. We have to stop being understanding and nice. We are a nation that has shown the world examples of faith, bravery, dedication, and excellence wherever we are, whatever we do. The only way to stop these unscrupulous people from using us, and taking us for granted is to exact financial consideration every time they take pot shots at us. Let them donate big amounts to charities in the U.S. or our country, to benefit the underprivileged, as penance. That’s the only way they will learn a lesson. Apologies are not enough anymore. Financial penalty is the only way the uncouths will learn that it doesn’t pay to disparage anyone. Filipinos have to be united all over the world and boycott products they put out and endorse or companies that sponsors them ,unless they retract publicly and pay out beacoup bucks for every racial slurs they hurl, written or oral, against our people and nation. We are not a nation of cowards, our people demonstrates in our country for any real or imagined infraction some Filipinos commits. So why should we let other nationalities get away with insults that impugns our integrity, personal or otherwise. These things have gotten out of turn now, (remember Hilfiger’s insulting comment about Filipinos, yet we still buys his products. Don’t we have sensitivity or national pride?) (Editor’s note: The supposed Tommy Hilfiger remark is an urban legend that has been circulating on the Internet since 1996. See the Snopes Urband Legends Reference entry at http://www.snopes.com/racial/business/hilfiger.asp) For every letter they use to disparage our people or our nation without due cause, they should be penalized parts of their profits, for moral damage. Affecting their pocketbooks are the only way this nonsense will stop. We are too kind, some mistakes it for stupidity, or cowardice…Let us show them what we are really made of, and see this thru. This is actually just the grain of sand that triggered the tilt that started the avalanche coming down. We can only take so much garbage, like with everything else, “kapag punong puno na, dapat ng kalusin”, so ENOUGH!!!! BASTA!!!!
BTW, I’m not a medical care professional, so I don’t have any vested interest to pick up this cause. But it’s enough that I am a Filipino, proud of being one, proud of the achievements of other Filipinos abroad, proud of our heritage! We work so hard to give a positive image of ourselves and our country abroad, has always taken pains to establish credibility by excelling in whatever field we are in, so it’s disconcerting, and insulting to us that some Filipinos back home treat this as a joke. We are great people from a proud nation, but we have to accept that we are our own worst enemy. We can’t make advances until we learn to support our own, and stand proud as a man, when others use us as adjectives or punchline in their books, their comments, or any other media tool, for entertainment. We need to have better image than Imeldific, or other disparaging remarks, taken out of the dictionary, books, etc., We need to act as one. This is a good start….

Anie

Heard what Pat Sajak’s said from Wheel of fortune last night? Guess he needs to apologize because it seems, he’s making a joke out of the joke of Desperate housewive’s, he went to say last night that Teri Hatcher called him and told him that she is not that desperate afterall! Me and my husband were laughing! Before everything goes deeper, you asked for an apology and the producers did sincerely apologized, then let’s stop it there.

LarryESP

Some comments are deviating from the actual issue. It’s not an issue of competency or how hardworking the Filipino doctors and nurses and are, which I believe America already knows by heart. Why do you think Filipinos in medical field are all over the United States? You will hardly find a medical institution in the U.S even in deep inside the rural states of Kansas, Iowa and so forth without a Filipino nurse. It’s because America knows the Filipinos are competent in every aspect.

The real issue is passing the board exam through leakage as a result of the exposed nursing test cheating a year ago. We are talking about a massive cheating and not just by one or two students so that cast a dark shadow on incoming nurses and doctors. It did not affect the competence and image of the current Fil-Am nurses at all. Their performances speak for themselves and the employers are happy.

Now that ABC have issued a public apology, let’s all go back to work and put this behind us. I’m sure this will fade away in no time. The more we talk about it, the more Desperate Housewives will benefit on it. They are flourishing ‘cuz we are giving them free publicity and they are enjoying it. Asking the Filipinos to boycott Desperate Housewives is just like asking your kids not to go to Friendster anymore.

Now is the time for self-examination. Let the guilty party – the govt. officials, the students and others who tried to hide the cheating feel the magnitude of their unjustly acts. That it’s a sin against the Lord and against humanity. Think about a nursing or a med student who didn’t deserve to pass the test but passed it by crooked way, got hired in a hospital and was assigned to a critical intensive care unit. Put yourself in the shoes of the patient.

Corruptions in the govt. and crab mentality among the people were the root cause of all of these misfortunes and many more to come. Behold, these sins are not just against mankind but also of divine.

marilyn

Hmm…. how do we defend the massive cheating of the Nursing Licensure exams that happened recently in the Philippines? It may be even hard to convince some bigots that these shenanigans are not common practice in the Philippines. Surely most of the health care providers here in USA did not cheat. We should understand that every nation and culture have their share of bigotry, discrimination, prejudice and cheaters. I think we are better off if we have a little understanding and tolerance of human nature. The positive impact of the honest service and competence of the Filipino health care providers will speak for itself. There’s no reason of being so sensitive about a silly punch line. In effect, it’s not really a “racial slur” but an indictment against the greedy Filipino politicians who messed up a proven clean and vibrant educational system. Now the same shameless politicians are loudly shouting for an apology? What a bunch of overacting hypocrites!
No doubt, the script writer is aware of present sorry state of the Philippine educational system. Instead of being so onion skinned to this sorry episode one should be thankful that somebody reminded us our apathy and inaction against those who are responsible for the these problems, namely: the greedy politicians. common guys, let’s do something and throw the rascals out.

Josie S. Araneta

Teri Hatcher is an actress and not the writer of that line. The most we can accuse her of is that she did not object in saying it but possibly she’s ignorant enough not to make an issue of it. The culprit is the scriptwriter and whoever they use as adviser on racial and other legal matters, like an editor, so to speak, and their employer, ABS.
That those who should know better did not have any concern or consideration using the material says a lot on what we have been, silent, accepting of fates given us, of insults hurled on our people and country.
We possibly deserve it because of what we have been, but certainly we are not stupid enough to think that the insult will stop on its own., and I hope dignified enough to be offended. I just read about Cory after I wrote another piece earlier. What else does my countrymen need to convince them it has to be stopped. We cannot do it alone here in the States. We need Filipinos all over the world to be united so we can the fight the narromindedness, the prejudice, the negative connotations that these kind of people inflict upon us. Silence, sense of humor, and false humility will not cut it. It’s time we all step up and be counted.
I really am not personally involved in these issues, it ’s just that the affronts affects me greatly that I just have to say or do something about it.
There is a quote that says, if I remember right, that it doesn’t matter what we do in life that counts. But it matters that in whatever we did, we made a difference!

DIBendano

I still cannot understand why legions of warring words against “Desperate Housewives” are still creeping in cyberspace. Why can’t they just let go and peel some bananas?

The real fact is, bullying is common everywhere and anywhere you go. And when it hits you, it is better to ignore it and move on. Stop feeding the troll.

For example, what if the US President will ask an public apology to those who called him “lame-duck president” (Fahrenheit 9/11) or “the US first US president with an IQ below 70″? But the White House just choose to ignore the trolls.

Filipinos are forgetfully too sensitive but foolishly too forgiving. I just cannot get it that an apology from ABC is not enough. Maybe they wanted more blood from ABC against the producers of Desperate Housewives and the characters. Hmm, this is not possible I suppose.

Mygoodfinds

kmpmd

In whatever angle I look at it, it is blatant bigotry. Here in the Philippines, I have friends who think that people are over reacting but majority of us felt that it was a malicious script meant to malign filipinos in the medical field. I believe that the actress has an even greater responsibility since she was the one to deliver the line. If Ms. Hatcher knows what is ethical and what is not, she probably wouldn’t have delivered the line.

What with the speeches of peace and equality when all the while you people have never learned the very lesson of 9-11.

Ed

I THINK THAT MUST BE GOOD INSULTING FILIPINO DOCTORS OR EVEN NURSES,THEY KEEP INSULTING THESE PEOPLE THEY WILL COME TO THINK IN RETURNING TO THE PHILIPPINES AND DO THEIR MOST VALUED WORK IN OUR COUNTRY WHERE THEY ARE MOST NEEDED,WHY SERVE THIS KIND OF PEOPLE WHEN IN DOING SO WILL RECEIVED A VERY HURTING INSULT,AND COMING FROM AN EQUALLY IGNORANT TERI.SHE DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN A WOMAN IN THAT JUNCTION OF LIFE HAVING MENOPAUSE.IN THE PHILIPPINES EVEN WOMEN WHO HAVE NOT REACH HIGHER EDUCATION DUE TO POVERTY CAN TAKE CARE OF IT. SOMEDAY WE WILL COME TO REALIZE THAT NOT ONLY MONEY ALONE CAN MAKE US HAPPY.

Chrissie

Guys, here’s another US TV show that insulted the Filipinos, especially the Filipino nurses.

http://www.pinoymoneytalk.com/2007/10/08/stupid-americans-filipinos-cant-take-jokes/

It says “I am fairly certain that Filipino nurse is stealing from me.”

I’m tired of being insulted!

Good GOD! tingnan nga ninyo ang Family Guy… they think that Filipinos are prostitutes and Homos!

MADtv thought of US as Stupid, Dumb (”Big Store” sketch, ginaganapan ni Bobby Lee)

drhenry4

Very saddening to realize the reason why there are “Teri Hatchers” in the world who would downgrade Filipinos; it’s because there are Filipinos who are stupid to make themselves mediocre vis-à-vis the “whites”. And they are stupid enough to believe that because of their white color that Americans are better than Filipinos. They are even quick to defend Teri Hatcher of her comment and justify the statement as true because of the events that happened in the medical field like the recent cheating in the nursing board exam, commenting even that the “truth hurts.”

Indeed the “truth hurts.” It hurts to find out that there are fellows who pretend to be wise and intelligent even to the point of acting like preachers, criticizing every wrong attitude of Filipinos of displaying too much pride in contrast to the reality of government’s dismal performance. It hurts to realize that there are fellows who would brand other Filipinos who joined the uproar as “hypocrites.” It hurts to see fellows who would even brag on Filipinos’ “peculiarity” in fabricating certificates in Recto as if Filipinos are the only living thing that fake credentials. And these “Filipinos” would assume themselves as not hypocrites and are just true to themselves. They are just true that they are bunch of mediocres and idiots, and they make true Teri Hatcher’s dialogue. And they are true that they have no reason to protest.

Don’t count yourself as Filipinos who work hard to be dignified because these Filipinos who got hurt in the show’s script have the right to express that they are hurt. It’s because they have dignity. And an idiot has no right to criticize that right or to stop it. While there are over reactions, it neither justifies not reacting at all.

Ed

INSULT BEGOTS INSUL,WE WILL
JUST CONTINUE INSULTING THESE WHITE SKINS.THEIR SKIN IS WHITE,OK BUT DIRTY.COMPARED TO US FILIPINOS,WE ARE BROWN OR FAIR SKINNED BUT WE DO NOT HAVE THAT SKIN SPOTS AROUND THERE BODY.WHAT IS TO BE WHITE IF YOU ARE HIDING THOSE DIRTY SPOTS AROUND YOUR BODY?NO WORTH OF ANY INTELLIGENT RESOANING IS WORTH TO INTERTAIN TERI’S UNFOUNDED INSULT IGNORANT LOGIC.SHE DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE’S TALKING.SO DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT IT, SHE IS JUST NOTHING BUT A THIRD RATE TRYING HARD COPYCAT.

hey guys, why don’t we make bad comments about these kinds of filipinos? their greed for money and the green card is what’s giving filipinos a bad image abroad.

tony

to drhenry4: is there dignity in selling your soul for a chance to earn us dollars? is there dignity in leaving fellow filipinos, specially the ones in the provinces, without doctors, nurses and teachers?

marilyn

Poor Henry, can’t accept the fact that nobody is perfect, not even Filipinos whom for over 50 years are hoodwinked, abused and tormented by it’s own greedy ruling class of trapos and political dynasts. Wake up man! “there are no tyrants, where there are no slaves!” (J. Rizal) There’s no pride and dignity when your country is littered with so much corruption. Yes even in it’s own decaying educational system. A slight in our educational system is nothing compared to the thousands of half naked children begging in the streets of Metro-Manila. Where 70% of the 80-million are living in poverty and appaling conditions. How can you be proud of living in the esteros, beside the railroad tracks, squatter colonies, garbage landfills and even cemeteries? while billion pesos are stolen from the govt. coffers. Wake up man. You can’t eat your pride and dignity while the country is ever spiralling to political and economic perdition. sakdal-laya.org

Please go slow on drhenry4, he’s a doc so hit bullseye by Teri. Will react the same if I am a doc, maybe worse. If I am a doc myself maybe I will operate on Teri to cure her menopausal problem without the benefit of anaesthesia. Just to get even with her for her insult on my alma mater. Which casts doubts on my competence as a doc. Kidding aside, analyzing doc henry’s comments here, I can’t find anything that might get anyone’s goat against henry. I sincerely symphatize with him.

THERE IS NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF BEING AMERICAN.DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION THEY SOLD THEIR SOULS TO THE ENEMY.THEY ARE JUST A BUNCH OF THIEF,THEY KILLED THE INTIRE VILLAGE OF BALANGIGA IN THE PHILIPPINES,WOMEN AND CHILDREN WITHOUT CHOICE AND STOLE THE CHURCH BELLS.THEY LOST THEIR SANITY THAT EVEN THE SANCTITY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WERE TRAMPLED UPON BY THOSE PIGS.THAT EVEN THE FILIPINOS REQUEST TO FORGET THOSE MASSACRES JUST RETURN THE CHURCH BELLS TO WHERE THE STOLE IT,BUT THOSE BASTARDS REFUSE.JUST CHECK WHERE THEIR HANGING THOSE CATHOLIC CHURCH BELLS,ALL I KNOW IS IT IS SOMEWHERE IN AMERICA.YOU CAN CALL THESE PEOPLE CLEAN?NOBODY HAS THE MORAL GROUND TO CALL SOMEBODY FILTHY WHEN YOU YOURSELF IS FILTHY.

LMAO !!!

This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Americans sp. LIB/DEMS make fun of everybody. Even their OWN PRESIDENT. They call him the DEVIL, and much more.

You people have to get use to it. Like what they always say:

“TAKE IT, OR LEAVE IT !!!”

Simple as that…

Lahrt

I love Filipinos, and am married to one. But to go beyond an apology and demand economic compensation is nothing less than mass corruption and extending the hat for a few coins (ala Malacayang). Shame on you. While America is just as imperfect as every other country, it is still the best country in the world. How bout if we all just say, ” enough, let’s all go back to our countries of origin”….Doubt many Filipinos (and others) would do it…So take a chill-pill, laugh it out, and enjoy the best possible freedom available in this world. Who said life was going to be perfect in America? Filipinos are hard-working and fun too; don’t short-change yourselves….Chin up.

Onion Skin

What a nerve!! We Filipinos have guts to ask for an apology when in fact our reputation and dignity is under the mud, soaking and stinking so bad?

Hey Juan dela Cruz, for our information: We are the “Most CORRUPT nation in Asia”. My God. We didn’t even become #1. From #2, we ascended to the Top. the #1 was gone. (Thailand. Taksin resigned) and so, we become the topnotch. GMA still in the seat eh.

After the Cheating Leakage of the Nursing board exam, how on earth can we redeem ourselves from shame and disgrace brought to us by those greedy people behind this scam? If there are cheating in exam, it is very much possible to fake the diplomas too. After all, diplomas comes very cheap in Recto Manila. Transcripts of records too! And you know what, authorities just passed by along Recto ave., casually, as if nothing illegal (faking) is happening there.

Oh, by the way, I forgot, GMA cheated, corrupts and lies also. That makes it fair. So, lowly filthy citizens like us earn money from illegal. Illegal government begets illegal citizens. Fake president begets fake dignity and reputation worldwide.

Yes, I think I have to agree with what this guy says on his blog:

http://asbb-foreignexchange.blogspot.com/2007...

I will end my commentary on the whole issue by simply asking why we think it is perfectly alright for us to do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

and this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

and even for one of our most respected politicans to say this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

but when anyone dares to poke fun at a segment of our population like
this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

everyone immediately cries racism and discrimination?

ok well im taking on behalf of filipinos and americans because i am both….and i think that this was a joke made by the producers just to get a laugh….if they said this about another country i dont think they would make a HUGE DEAL out of it like the phillipines is making it. my mom who is phillipino and is a docter was affended but also laughed at it at the same time…i think that if those who were affended should just stop watching the show….i dont think deperate houswives should be punished for anything because comedians do it all the time and make fun of every single race.

Janet

“Do you want to live in a discriminating country like this”

As if the Visayans, Mindanaoans, hill tribes, “maiitims” are not BLATANTLY discriminate din the Philippines?

Who would want to live in a country where your own countrymen discriminate on you? No wonder many leave the Philippines
