Itâs this type of speed and efficiency that frightens me. For one t hing, back in the day, when events such as these would occur, it would take a w hile for actual coverage of the event to even reach those who would probably be only a few blocks away. Take the first EDSA Revolution back in 1986âI was sti ll a kid then but it took hours for people to mobilize, and for the news to rea ch us. But when it happened again in 2001, within minutes I received an SMS and Inquirer.net (then Inq7.net) alrea dy had it on their headline. Because technology affords us this speed and effic iencyâwireless connectivity, portable digital cameras, 3G cellphones and moreâa ny newsworthy event can be broadcast in seconds. And because of the growing popularity of blogging among Filipinos, news of this latest terrible event spread like wildfire. Already within an hour there were hundreds of blogs writing about the explosion, all with their own speculations and theories as to what happened. Hundreds of photos of the carnage were being sent over email, posted on photo blogs. And even better, actual, first-hand acc ounts of the incident began to spring upâfrom people who were right there when it happened to people who knew other people that were there even to people at t he emergency room of the Makati Medical Center where most of the victims of the explosion were brought. And to think this happened during the afternoon, durin g a time when loads of people are still online, getting updates from friendsâ a nd friends of friendsâ blogs. My friend Azrael was one such person. Withi n an hour of the explosion, he was watching the news and already posting images heâd taken from ANC on his blog . An hour after that, another guy on Multiply started talking abo ut his first hand experience of the explosion, even posting images he'd tak en himself while he was there.Indeed, news travels with blinding speed in the age of online media and citizen journalism -- and so does fear. The Chinese have a curse: May you live in interesting times. We're living in th at kind of world right now.
At least now, there are more alternative to the government's party line on disa
sters.
If you have twitter, news spreads even faster. It's a microblogging tool. That'
s how I found out about it because I enabled my twitter to send updates via sms

Anyway, after I wrote about the Glorietta 2 explosion, as of today, I've receiv
ed no less than 5 instant messages, all saying the same thing--the so-called ma
stermind behind the explosion plans on hitting a few more malls and crowded are
as by placing a van loaded with explosives.
Sounds fishy to me... but are any of us now willing to take that chance? Is tha
t IM warning for real or just another hoax?

Within hours of the blast people are already so sure that it was a bomb, with s
ources muddled up by information recycled from friends of friends of friends wh
ich inadvertently winds up being siphoned by news sites like this and in turn b
ecomes source of even more bloggers.

o kung sino responsable dito ayon sa mga pangyayari. unang pinalabas ng mga aut
oridad, isa itong pagsabog na ang dahilan ay bomba with RDX, an ingredient of t
he military explosive C4, na gamit ng military, tapos ngaun sasabihin na ang d
ahilan ng pagsabog ay gas explosion cause by chemical leak from a diesel tank?
which is which kaya? tapos kinabukasan after the blast, inako ng raha sulayman
movement which afterwards e di pala ung pinuno nila ung nagsalita? sino me pak
ana ng pag-ako? tapos ngaun, lumalabas di pala bomba dahilan ng pagsabog. at ba
kit kailangang pag-agawan ang mga ebidensya ng military at pnp? dahil me cover-

truth is.. i was in the mode of panic while i took those screen caps and video
fro my TV
and thanks for the technology that I received the news from a friend via YM
and then got a quick chance to post it right away and mass send it just to warn
my friends and people i know in my network.
it was very helpful for those blog readers because some of them is in the offic
e at work with no TV or radio, but they got YM and internet.
news was delivered smoothly and after that they became aware of the incident.
they say maintenance had to replace a pump somewhere in the basement days befor
e the blast.....hmmmm..and a submersible at that....hmmmmmm.could it be it had
a timer?..... and an ignition device to fuse with the gases inside?....just won
derin......
it's an enlightening issue to those people na naniniwala kay TRILLANES.

Eh, Bulag talaga iyan! He/she is blind with all the money ininapal ni Mrs. Pida
l, Sa mukha nila. I didn't vote for Senator Trillanes, But I believe what he sa
y! kasi yon RDX na sinasabi nila iyan ay ginagamit sa pangsabog sa bomb. Beside
the PNP already got the evidence but all of a sudden nawala. Thats means the s
tolen administration of Mrs. Pidal's, The one covering things up! ano ang tinat
ago nila. If they don't have anything to hide bakit ganoon nalang ang pangtakip

I can never imagine myself reporting from a blast site leave alone full coverage and that is why today I'm not from the world of media. The whole crew puts their lives at risks during such unfortunate incidents. At all costs, they try to pass something to the rest of the world who nervously waits for them at that moment. Thanks to technology for the sophisticated cams and cells which become the need of the hour during such events. The quote "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" applies perfectly for the need of modern gadgets during coverage.
