Two weeks after I expressed grave disappointment over Chiz Escudero’s first-ever speech on the floor of the Senate, I still get the occasional letter in response. Much of the initial feedback, during the first week, came in the form of text messages; some went straight to the Inquirer’s letters section. (One of them, from Marissa Tanangco, sees print tomorrow.) And a few have responded either through this blog, because of this post, or in other blogs.
Like Jowana Bueser’s comment, most of the responses, especially those defending Escudero, have been thoughtful; I do not mean they are immune to rebuttal, only that obvious care had been taken in articulating their arguments.
Some perspectives are skewed by their blind spots; Jowana, for instance, is quick to charge Mar Roxas and Ping Lacson with unbecoming presidential ambitions —- as though Manny Villar, Escudero’s candidate for Senate president, did not share those very same ambitions. (If my own view is similarly skewed, I would be happy to hear someone point out my own blind spots.)
But I appreciate the tone Jowana (and Marissa too) took: Unhysterical, pensive, sober. Jowana even confronted Chiz on the day the column came out (if I know how to count the calendar correctly).
I stand by my reading of his first speech, though: It wasn’t particularly thought-through, and it misinterpreted that famous passage from Scripture.
PS. In case I will be misunderstood: I use the word “impeach” in its non-political sense. Senators, of course, are not impeachable officials. But their rhetoric, their “testimony,” can be impeached.

that’s right… he spent his time in congress finding fault with the administration… ano ba natrabaho niya?

Chiz and Cayetano have one thing in common: All talk and no ACTION. They have been at the helm of the infamous congress without even passing a relevant bill borne out of their own initiative! At least, they made significant MEDIA MILEAGE when they capitalized on the GMA-Garci fiasco! I do not think we will expect anything from them for the next 6 years… poor Juan dela Cruz.

Your blind spot, John, depends on how we define the term ‘opposition’ here. A simple blogger like me might define the term ‘opposition senator’ as one who opposes the wishes of the president. In the same manner, I think it appriopriate to define the term ‘administration senator’ as one who performs at the wishes of the president. Very simplistic definitions indeed, but I would like to welcome any one who may want to point out my blind spots on these. Now, presently Chiz has not shown any move yet that would show he is kowtowing to the wishes of the president, so, by the standard of my definition of the term, I’m sorry to say, John, that that’s your blind spot. Unless you know something I don’t. In the coming days, if the good senator Chiz change his good ways to bad ways by being in a basket of rotten tomatoes, then, by then, John, I will be quick to absolve you of your sin.

like father, like son…chiz cannot deny na nakinabang sya sa marcos regime through his father…beneficiary sya ng diktadurya…sige nga, ano ang stand nya against the martial law of marcos? come on chiz, be your own man..can you afford to break free from your past? same goes to senator allan..so, anong mind set ng ating mga young heroes kuno? ever wonder how easily they capitulate?
richie
absolutely. nagpagwapo lang siya during the time of estrada’s impeachment and trial. just so disappointing to see nother young promising politician na magiging trapo rin pala. ang masasabi ko lang, my gad, mga katoliko pa man din kayo, mahiy anaman kayo!

All politicians have the same thing in mind. Money. Money and more money. The only thing they are good at is corruption. The filipino politician in my eyes is just another form of 3rd hand car salesman.

The present politicians never change. It’s embarrassing how they carry themselves in public. They can’t even sit down properly in their chairs. They fight like 5 year olds. There is a short distance from their brain to their mouths. It’s just embarrassing. I would kill myself if i was a politician.
Kabayan
Chiz must realize that the people are watching — patient, but watching his every move. He is still given the benefit of the doubt by many but he must not exhaust this good will. He must be careful.

Binoto ng marami yan eh, let’s wait and see. Kasi mahirap mag judge dahil sa kanyang speech, just give him a chance kasi one month pa lang naman sya nakaupo.

What did you guys expect from the son of Marcos’ agricultural minister who was one of the few who attended the 1986 inauguration that even Tolentino skipped? Unrepentantly loyalist to the last. Escudero is deeply beholden to Danding, the only non Marcos family member who was allowed to fly to Hawaii. There is no honor here lest we totally forget the dictatorship that ruined so many lives. Mongrel is too tame. Tuta to death is more like it.
I’ve had enough of all these infatuated girls dazzled by what is undeniably excellent speaking skills. We need to recognize true statesmen from well-paid hacks tasked to protect selfish interests.

Not yet a waste, too early to judge, we shall wait and see … we’ll be watching.
Remember Senator Escudero that it was your role as a fiscalizer of the corrupt in government that encouraged people to vote for you. Don’t forget that. Don’t forget your duty to the people. The same is true for you Senator Cayetano.

Allan PC the winner! having got the Blue Ribbon Committee, first project nya? Jose Pidal case and all of the Presidents men!!Are u hapi now?

Say Chiz!!!! months before elections, chiz was very busy preparing for midterm elections salita ang salita againts kay PGMA wala namang nagawa sa Lower House.

Yup, after i saw him being interviewed in different talk shows and television programs i thought he’s cool, articulate and with a remarkable flow of thought. But lets give him the benefit of the doubt. If he fails to deliver, then he’s no less than the ordinary “trapos” who’s main objective is to draw attention, gain power and influence and use it the “trapo” way. I hope his gift of gab will benefit the Filipino people and not his family, friends, and fellow “trapos” if indeed he’s one of the “trapos’”.

You are hating the son so much for the sins of the father, as if sin is a hereditary factor that could be tranferred to offspring. I understand you might have had some bad experiences with the Marcos administration and so I sincerely symphatize with you. But what could an agriculture secretary, even in a dictatorship as you said, could have hurt you so much to create such hate for the man and his son inside you? I’m sure it’s not what John here said about Chiz that made you so angry, is it? Speaking of sins, have you compared the sins of Marcos with that of the succeeding administrations after him, including the present one? And if so, do you also hate the horrible crimes committed? Yes? Good! Please consider me an admirer from now on. But please, Julie, taper off the hate. It’s bad for the health.

To compare Senators Escudero and Cayetano to supposedly other “better” people is incorrect. Their main forte before they were Senator was to fiscalize in government. Eradication of corruption is also foremost among the minds of Filipinos that is why they won the last Senate race.
Some keep on harping and count the “number of laws made” as mark of performance. It is not. Filipinos are looking for fiscalizers and henceforth Escudero and Cayetano were chosen by the people.
We have a lot of laws but actually lacks in implementation. It is the hope of Filipinos that the two would fulfill their roles as the fiscalizers and anti-corruption czars as expected of them by our countrymen.
Be that as it may, Senators, we are watching you. Do your duty.
Kabayan
According to the UN report, about forty percent (40%) of the national budget allocated to projects and departments are lost to corruption. (My personal estimated loss is about 60%)
So therefore one must remember, that if indeed there is corruption in the Jose Pidal case, it would help our poor countrymen.
How? It will show that our system works and have “teeth”. Other corrupt people will be afraid of imitating them especially if “big fishes” are caught and punished. The more severe the punishment, the more it will serve a deterrent for other corrupt and would be corrupt trapos in government.
Yes, each and every corrupt “big fish” that is caught and severely punished, the more our society as a whole benefits. These benefits would result into a more credible, efficient, and honest system which will translate into benefits not only the poor but for all Filipinos concerned.
Kabayan
Correction of previous post; It meant: “If there is actual discovery of corruption and corresponding severe punishment meted in the Jose Pidal case and other corruption related cases like Fertilizer scam, election fraud, etc., it would benefit our poor countrymen”

Those 18 million filipinos who voted chiz ay nag-sisisi na ngayon including Ms. Susan Roces who campaigned for him. Akala mo totoong opposition. Peke pala!!!! Sa GO tatlo sila.

lahat sila walang silbi

I even thought of volunteering to campaign for Chiz during the previous election but since I don’t know where to apply, I remained a silent admirer. That was then. Honestly, I feel glad I haven’t as I have noticed a change in Chiz. Especially when I saw his billboards. It made me sick! With all his money, he still craves for recognition! Ang babaw naman nya! At cheap at that! He should be busy helping Filipinos and instead posing for those ads. He’s getting millions for being a senator! What a waste of a Filipino man! Mag-artista na lang sya. Kunin pa sya ni mother lily! I just hope he can still redeem himself. If an election wil be held again now, I’m sure Chiz would not be number 2 and definitely not number 1 either.

People are disappointed about the rumors now. What’s the real score?!! What’s the true story out of this…Is it true na nasa administration ka na ngayon, if it’s true i’ll be really disappointed…it’s frustrating to hear all those rumors, please do have your name cleared if the rumors aren’t true…

I started worrying about Chiz Escudero
when he led the infamous impeachment case against the then Chief Justice Davide.
I knew behind that ever smiling “Bamboo look alike face” is a youthful Marcos -type politician…media savvy, knows the proper media sound bites and has a cunning and opportunistic mind.
Watch out for CHIZ!
His father, the former Marcos Cabinet secretary trained him well!

I have not really heard much from Chiz lately. It is difficult to judge him this early. The labels that I read from all bloggers are just too much to comprehend. I was not so sure of the bases for these labels: corrupt, papogi, non-performing, etc and yes, even the sins of Marcos are now hurled unto him. I would not judge him because of that one ‘speech’. He must have reflected on it so much and I know, he knows what went wrong with that ‘speech’. Just like Kabayan and everyone else, I am watching him… very closely. Right now, I look up to him as my voice in the Senate. All I ask of him and it is his responsibility to me and to the rest of the Filipinos that he should only represent TRUTH and JUSTICE.

I have been a long “fan” of chiz…hahaha..that was meant to be a joke..he can be a real good puppet..one who keeps on talking but really has no substance inside..ask his folks in Sorsogon and you would be able to gauge what he has done, or better what he hasn’t, to improve the quality of life of the people in one of the poorest province in the country during all the nine years that he served as their Honorable representative…now he’s saying he wants to fulfill the dreams of this nation…that’s plain b*l% @h*t…chiz is no more than a loud mouth in the senate…worst is he’s not alone…allan c..can’t say more, i simply pity the millions of poor Filipinos who voted for them..

Opposition Senators dominated the last mid-term election. From that result, they claiming that people are now learning to use their vote wisely…do they mean that they are the heroes who can save the nation from poverty and corruption…it`s better to call them an opportunist Senator…who`s members having story that are due to one thing…”personal interest!”

Sad to say mga kabayan.

Chiz and Peter Cayetano are two young ambitious demagogues in the making. Their promotion to the Senate is underserved as they have no accomplishments in the House to prove they deserve to be there. Their records as hard-working congressmen speak for themselves. It was zero.

it is a common fault among immature voters (which is most of the electorate) to vote for leaders who look good on tv. similarly, candidates who are wealthy and have celebrity spouses have good winning chances of making it to congress. when will we ever learn?

Chiz Escudero should be called Cheap-pipay EscuDiri. He’s all pa-cute, all bark, but no bite. He’s so cheap, nakaka-diri talaga! All he did in Congress was malign everyone who was a threat to his senatorial & presidential ambitions. He’s manipulative and used every opportunity to belittle everyone & call attention to himself. To call him a fiscalizer is the height of irony. He’s a swell-head to the highest degree. He carries himself so high-handedly; when he smiles, it’s a smirk. And we spent taxes for his act? When he placed second in the senatorial race, he became double the bloated egotist that he already was. His triumph killed all my hopes for this country…
romy
Opposition or administration? Nah, theyre only after their own personal interest. Only months after their elections, they are looking forward to the presidential derby in 2010. Nothing really change. Its the same inutile Senate good only in grandstanding and useless inconclusive investigation in search of media mileage. Better abolish the Senate and give their budget to the Education Department.

Wow MC_90 and Juan dela Cruz! Thanks, mga pare!
Do not pity me. I can separate reasons from emotions. I am still able to discern logical from illogical conclusions. Let us see.
I can always raise my voice. Haha!

To all those who voted for Chiz:

Maybe, instead of writing nonsense in this blog, just write the specific things that you want, write your problems, then, maybe the senators will read this and they will find something to sponsor in the senate. There are already too many laws and it’s hard to think of new one, so if they can’t do anything, they will resort to talking. Give them something to do by telling what really are your problems and maybe they will sit down and work and stop talking. Stop being judgemental, do your part.

I noticed a very interesting definition of “true opposition” to many kababayan in this blog. The defition seems to be skewed towards opposing for the sake of opposing, based on personality rather than valid issues and argument.
True oppositon should be one highlighting the blind spots of any idea for the purpose of minimizing negative results to the country and the people. The True Opposition, does not necessary need to oppose any idea from the incumbent. The True oppositon support legislation and actions that benefits the country as a whole.

The entire nation was stung during the last elections. The real score is 11-1; 11 opposition and 1 admin (si MigZ lang ang nagsurvive) dahil they did massive cheating while the nation was looking the other way: watching if the administration will cheat. Joker, Angara, Pangilinan and Honasan are all opposition, neither administration nor independent. Even GO’s campaign manager (Serge O) cannot believe the opposition sweep of the polls. GO lulled the nation into a sort of hypnotic spell that the admin will cheat yet they were the ones who cheated massively. Meanwhile fairness was abused - any move of Comelec that will disadvantage the opposition though in the interest of fairness was treated as wrong thus reducing Comelec into a dodo since it cannot do anything since it has lost its capacity or will to draw the line.
Positions in the winning list were bidded out long before election day: Loren bidded highest that is why she is #1 (sino kaya ang funder niya ?), Cheese (ang baho) is # 2 because he was outbidded by Loren (of course Marcos’ Pacman is the funder), Lacson took care of his own funding and so on. Watch for the final report of the Anti Money Laundering Council on the opposition’s fund movements immediately before and after E-day. May sisingaw diyan.

Let’s stop these non sense issue. Unless mabago ang isip ng bawat pilipino about the type of politics we have. Di matatapos ang ganitong generations of waste votes. Sana magtanda na tayo na lahat ng mga politician na laging nasa dyaryo at ads even all in public ay sakim at walang inisip kundi power and money. Let us all see other politician who are silently and slowly doing their jobs kahit nuon pa man. Let us admire senator LAcson. He has the principle. Sen. Joker Arroyo. We can really see naman kung sino ang mga sincere ang intention to make law and upheld the situation of our country. C’mon guys, napakalinaw ng political situation natin. I say these even we are very far away dyan sa Philippines. If you are in other country talaga. You can see the difference ng government and politics compared sa tin. Chiz, Alan Peter, Roxas, Defensor (Mike). wala kang makikitang sincerity sa job nila. All they want is power and recognition.

I am honored that an actual antithesis to my pseudonym was actually made for this blog … or maybe that was just pure coincidence, at any rate.
http://inquirerbloggers.net/eleksyon2007/2007/07/31/justice-and-common-sense/

Alan & Chiz are of the same coat… they’re turncoats.Look at allac C before the election, dada ng dada siempre political grandstanding & looked at the effect-nanalo as senator.Si chiz naman ang galing magsalita but then does he embody the qualities of a good politician? to the 11 million who voted for him, watch out, he might be following the political footsteps of his father, the DA Secretary of Marcos regime - CAREFUL LANG sila ni Allan, everybody is all eyes on them tingnan natin kung ano ang magawa nila sa senado dahil parang they’re so competent kung magsalita
abe
therfore i conclude, as long as Gloria is not steeping down our country will never be peaceful. forever! AMEN.
Rosing
Abe, it’s not really gloria who’s making the phil an unpeaceful place to live, it’s actually the croc and corrupt politicians, ang mga ganid sa pera, sa power who’s making this country a hell. let’s get rid of them! lolz
darthvader
therefore I conclude that as long as people think like abe, our country will never be peaceful…kasi kahit sino ang ilalagay natin sa puwesto…maron pa ring magre reklamo…
abe
aling rosing and darthvader,
fyi, i will stand to my conclusion. Just try to review all gloria’s actions. sino-sino bang mga tao ang pinupwesto nya sa mga cabinete. lahat yan bayad utang ni gloria. with that, we can never be progressive.
Even c mirriam kumukontra. I think this will not anymore deserve reasonable dialogue between reasonable people.
Kabayan
I believe Atienza was the one responsible for ordering the cutting of the trees in our urban forest park at Arroceros to be replaced by buildings … and now he is assigned as DENR head. I do not know whether to laugh or cry … Is there any wisdom to this choice?
darthvader
Abe:
What ‘we can never be progressive?’ — We are already progressive…i am…siguro ikaw hindi…besides…ikaw if nasa puwesto ka, sino ba ang ilalagay mo?…di ba yung mga taong tumutulong sayo? para ka namang hindi tao kung iba yung ilulukluk mo sa puwesto….as long as they are competent…im good with that…

You know what? I do not have to die for Chiz Escudero. I am seriously watching his every move. Just lately, I read that he was among those who question the JPEPA (Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement). This is exactly what I want those people I voted to do. This government signed this agreement in secrecy projecting economic benefits for the country but a number of concerns have been raised by civil society organizations about dumping of toxic wastes of Japan into the country, where toxic wastes are considered tradeable goods. Hah, which country would allow such a thing! I want Chiz to continue what he is doing because as a Filipino my government is not doing what it is supposed to do…protect my interest. If Chiz is able to do this…he would be doing just the right thing.
See, this is what we should be doing…support him when he is doing the right thing…throw stones at him when he is not behaving. I really hope Chiz reads this.

Chiz no doubt has his own personal ambitions. Manny Villar is definitely choosing between Jinggoy, Chiz and Alan Peter as to who will be his running mate in the 2010 Presidential elections. Each one of them has to prove his worth.

Hmm, Chiz Escudero is now making his move; instead of prioritizing a lifestyle check on private citizens as suggested, he is now strongly pushing for an all out lifestyle check on the people in government instead, starting with those in Customs.
I believe Senator Escudero started out in the right track and now we shall see how the rest of the people in government respond to this call and particularly in those magkaKAMPI in Congress.
We shall see if this will be supported by the administration or if it will be watered down and defanged to protect illegal interests of people in government.

Well, I just hope all of us are able to analyze what is going on in the political environment. This is a good platform to exchange views. My only concern is the labelling and the judgment that people make just because of one mistake, if we can call it a mistake (as you can see, I have difficulty calling Chiz’ move as a mistake, I do not want to judge him for that action, he has his own reasons… rightly or wrongly). I want to see a pattern in his decisions and actions. Only then, I can make a judgment.

My compliments to those members in the Senate who wish to investigate anomalies in our elections and expose those who would be responsible for those who try to destroy Philippine democracy. I just hope those who are investigating won’t be grandstanding and all papogi points…im sick and tired of those people…
OFW in Afghanistan
Barbaro
How do you define grandstanding and ‘papogi’? Where do you draw the line between passionately presenting your evidences to people who would not even want to listen to them vs the term grandstanding and ‘papogi’? I think our problem right now is that if we do not agree with the ideas and issues being argued upon by the presenters…it becomes grandstanding. If we agree with their points…it is not.
I would go by evidences presented and argued on one by one…not dismissed and stopped simply by the whims of those who should be listening to them.

Escudero … may tinatago ba sila?
OFW in Afghanistan
Yes, Kabayan…the silence is deafening. It is scary isn’t it? Parang deadma…ayaw magpaimbestiga. May tinatago nga yata. Haha! Hopefully we would hear from them soon…very soon.
Eric
Why did you all voted for them? i told you, talkative personalities - work lessssss or even do not work at all (but they are working for their own sake not for our sake). At least you know now whom to vote in the next election. beware of personalities who now pretend to be working while they are working for their candidacy in the next election. Vote for a candidate who has accomplishment to better our country and not those who always seek to pull down who are doing good. Again, vote for someone who is valid and not to who talks more.
Kabayan
Hi OFW in Afghanistan,
Haha.
Yes as in all things, even evil things has an end. Even now people, who have been responsible for continually attempting to return to corrupt Marcos-like dictatorial system, now fall like tenpins. Slowly but surely they are being severely reminded to stop their corrupt and abusive practices … or else.
They may buy the courts, buy the media, use their armed goons, hire publicists and “spin doctors”, hide behind lawyers and their power, hide their deeds in their mansions, palaces, thick walls and show thick “dead-ma” faces; they can threaten, intimidate and kill… but they cannot hide from the omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence of the Supreme Power who rules and guides us all.

in my over 20 years of existence, it is not until now that i found out that there is actually a “correct interpretation” of a scripture from the Bible.
i always thought that passages from the Bible are subject to your own interpretation, to your own experiences.
Chiz may have not discussed the passage alongside his speech very well. He may have disappointed you with how he understood and interpreted that scripture but can you really be such a hypocrite and judge a person just because he has a different interpretation than yours?
don’t you think that’s grossly unfair?
Judge Chiz after you have proven that he is, indeed, doing nothing.
Ironically, although “Sorsogon residents” here claim that they Chiz have done nothing for them, i find it kind of funny that he topped the Bicol regions.
