Worth dying for?

08/21/07

Posted under Uncategorized

Colleague John Nery asks, Is Ninoy, today, even relevant? Time, has, indeed dulled what for some was a defining point in our nation’s life. Juan Mercado delves into this, and ponders the remaining mysteries, chief of which remains: who ordered Ninoy killed?

Ninoy Aquino’s coming home to die was a fork in the road, for those who’d opposed Ferdinand Marcos thus far. Whether of a moderate or radical persuasion, up to that point they were a minority. Ninoy’s death began the transformation, in earnest, of the country. After August 21, 1983, what would become the minority in terms of public opinion, were supporters of the Marcoses.

Marcos was rumored to be dying, he hadn’t established a mechanism for a transition (one people took seriously, anyway), furthermore, parliamentary elections were expected in 1984. The moderate opposition -which, we forget, had flirted with the idea of armed struggle, too, a few years earlier- was divided between those who opposed participating in elections, and people like Ninoy who’d advocated political participation as far back as the elections of 1978, when Ninoy campaigned from his jail cell. The CPP-NPA, trying to build bridges by means of the NDF, and which had resisted the dictatorship from day one, continued its hard-line stance. Thus began its transformation from a movement that had been on the right side of history through its resistance to martial law, into a movement that missed the bus, historically, morally, and politically, by boycotting the snap elections in 1986.

Postcard Headlines reprints a commentary by the late Antonio Zumel, which shows to great effect, I think, how calcified the thinking of the Left had become in 1984, how it is misread, because of ideology, the significance of Ninoy’s death, overstated the importance of its own role and its place in the public imagination, and so set itself up to alienate its more moderate allies and sidelined itself when the dictatorship finally fell. I delved into all of this in my article, The Road to Edsa, published during the 10th anniversary of Edsa.

I’ve posted my own thoughts on Ninoy’s assassination (August 21, 2006) but in view of the above, it’s good to revisit some articles that help explain what went on. In his column today, Conrado de Quiros says he believes Marcos decided on martial law when his NP senatorial slate was massively defeated in the 1971 elections. A contemporary account was written by Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. when the Free Press made Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. Man of the Year, 1971. Locsin, Jr. revisited his 1971 conversation with Ninoy in Ninoy speaking, August 23, 1986.

Surely written by Locsin, Sr. was an editorial titled If, which pointed out what could have been, had the Marcoses merely whisked Ninoy away back to jail, or publicly embraced him: called his bluff, so to speak. And this insight into the ultimate handicap of the late dictator:

So, Marcos was brilliant – at the start. He did not have a gun, then: martial law enforced by the Armed Forces of the Philippines with his Number 1 hood, Ver, as chief-of-staff. Then, martial law! Brilliant he was, okay, or just cunning, unprincipled, a thinking son of bitch? All right, brilliant Marcos was. But the intellect deteriorates not meeting real challenge. The gun makes all challenge ineffectual. The mind becomes dull. Absolute power does not only corrupt absolutely, it stupefies. There is no need for intelligence when the guns serves. The blade of the mind rusts. Absolute power brings absolute stupidity. Such is the lesson of all dictatorships. Except the Communist challenge to contend with, and so remains as sharp as ever. Marcos, if in control when Ninoy was killed, had become just plain stupid.

There are two brilliant -and fierce- meditations by Teodoro M. Locsin, Sr., the first titled The Conscience of the Filipino: The Sacrifice and the second, which took it’s cue from Aquino’s famous statement, “The Filipino is worth dying for.” Locsin, Sr. tartly asked, Is he?

Thank you for taking interest in Zumel’s 1984 AB commentary which I posted in my blog.

Will add on this topic after tomorrow.

This is politics, pure and simple. From a standpoint of a simple blogger like me. In all political battle arena, there are always the political losers, and there are the political winners. It does not matter whether he was killed by the right or by the left, for all his patriotism, Ninoy was still one of the political losers. What does his killing done to the nation, even if the hypers kept on saying that it leds to the toppling of the ‘dictatorship’, a very tiring terminology. Look at our country now, a pitiable sight, from being the tiger of Asia to the pariah, sliding down continuously after that much applauded toppling of so-called dictatorship, thanks to the succeeding politicians that took over who did so little for the country but mostly, and foremostly, took care of themselves, up to the present. The Filipino worth dying for? Of course he is. We will all die for the people, if given the chance and the right circumstances. But it has nothing to do with the politicians, or politics. They will die for their interest, not for the Filipino.

Our greatest heroes died for us,Rizal,Bonifacio & Ninoy, but look at us now, more than 100 years since Rizal & Bonifacio died, and 24 years since Ninoy,We are still the same, people of undisciplined characters at our own country, but when we go to foreign land,we follow rules of that land. When we go back to Philippines we will join rallies because we say that our human rights are violated with laws such as the National I.D.system which we secure when we are on foreign land.Tell me what kind of people we are?We are easily influenced by tabloid journalisms and left leaning groups who dont wants our nation to move forward. We are peoples with crab mentality. Our country, the Philippines is worth dying for because of its beauty, but its people, the undisciplined Filipinos are never worth a single drop of blood. We should change first our rotten ways.

Kabayan

Some Filipinos are worth dying for; other Filipinos especially the corrupt, greedy, manipulative and abusive are worth only if they replace Ninoy and get shot in the head instead.

The Filipinos in general are worth dying for…However, the current filipino politicians? THEY ARE WORTH KILLING…because right now, they are the ones killing the filipino people and the integrity of the Philippines as a whole…

I just read in inquirer that LACSON reopened the hallo garci case against GMA….Again, fooling the filipino people…tell us all that he is doing this to get to the bottom of it…the truth…It is obvious however that the only thing he wants is to be in the center of MEDIA attention…see his FACE on every news paper…and advance his political ambitions…

Why cant just our politician start doing the things they are supposed to do? The promises they are supposed to keep?

If this is the best they can do…why in the world did we elevt this kind of Political Animals?????

nice article! could you please make also an article about the peoples’ opinions and reactions about a writter from Manila Standard named Malu Fernandez? her name is eveywhere in the emails received by OFWs like me. she’ve done a controversial writing that mocks and insults OFWs in UAE. she’s also been labeled a bigot by numerous pinoy bloggers. i think this needs a media attention.

Papa Piolo

Our great heroes died for us,so we could have the freedom that we now enjoys, but what we gave back to them.More than a hundred years since “The Pride of Malayan Race” Dr. Jose Rizal, the envy of other nation for having such “A gem of a man”.The Philippines is still the same and in fact being overtaken by previous laggards. What happen, its because of the Filipinos freewheeling democracy,We have become a nation of undisciplined people. We are following rules of other country, getting I.D. when we are required to do so,but in our own country,we will join rallies to oppose implementing it.We allow ourselves to lean on those destabilizers and irresponsible media so that our country cannot move forward. Our premier learning institution,U.P. have become not a breeding ground for leaders but a breeding ground for communists. Its a shame for us.The beauty of the Philippines is worth dying for,but not its undisciplined, selfish Filipinos that we have now become.

Karlo

Interestingly, the armed underground Left led by the CPP also debated on the question of the participating or boycotting of the 1978 Batasang Pambansa elections. The Manila-Rizal Party Regional Committee mobilized for the electoral exercise, helped set up the LABAN with the traditional opposition, and even fielded its own candidate - labor leader Alex Boncayao.

A few days before election day, a decision from the Central Committee’s Executive Committee affirmed the boycott position in what became a prelude to the boycott of the 1986 snap elections. A proposal to call for national elections was also raised as early as 1975. Needless to say, the line was branded as “reformist” by the CC-EC. (Benjamin Pimentel Jr. Edjop. 1989.)

While Ninoy believed that the Filipino is worth dying for, Marcos on the other hand deeply believed that the Filipino is worth killing for. That is why his idea of Peace and order was to keep every dissenters six feet below the ground where they will all rest in peace.

Does’nt this bring back memories when we hear of political killings and mysterious disappearances of GMA’s critics? I guess just like Marcos, GMA wants Peace and Order at all cost, so she can pursue her economic agenda for the country without much resistance from the people.

krizteta

Hayyyyy nakooh,
Kung hindi sa kanya, hindi ako sikat at super-rich ngayon noh ! ! !

freeman

Ninoy did not expect to be killed. He rushed home thinking that Marcos was dying and he feared that either Danding Cojuangco or the military will seized power in such scenario. He intends to rally the opposition and some disgruntled military elements to return the country to democracy. He miscalculated and the rest as they say is history.

carlo

What i Can say is….JUST LEAVE THE COUNTRY FOR GOOD….NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR SAY…IT WILL NEVER CHANGE BECAUSE IF IT WILL CHANGE, IT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED A LONG TIME AGO…..GIVE IT ANOTHER 200 HUNDRED YEARS AND ITS TILL THE SAME….SO WHY BOTHER…..WHAT THE HECK….JUST GATHER ALL YOUR FAMILY AND JUST MIGRATE…..LIKE WHAT I DID…AND THE BEST DECISION I DID…

carlo

And also….you know why people there in The phil do not follow the rules..BECAUSE IF YOU DO…YOUR THE ONLY ONE FOLLOWING….SO WHY BOTHER….ITS PURE HOPELESS….and about the heroes…they are all dead…for what?…so just forget it.

carlo

SO STOP COMPLAINING…..I DECIDED NOT TO COMPLAIN AND JUST LEAVE THE COUNTRY…..IF YOU DO NOT LEAVE….YOU WILL JUST DIE COMPLAINING…..ITS A WASTE OF LIFE…..THERE IS SO MANY MORE TO DISCOVER OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY……..MANY MORE BETTER POTENTIAL AND A BETTER LIFE…

Sammy

During Marcos Martial Law, No denying that he is corrupt like all politicians in the philippines. Marcos was by himself with his cronies but there was peace and order and no killings. Today, there are thousnads corrupt politicians with there cronies and more killings and for sure there is no peace and order. I would say, Philippines is my mother land and it its worth dying just to help a little bit for a change.

Marcial

Worth dying for?!? That’s a joke. I hate to say this but we weren’t born to be free. We hate the responsibility that comes with freedom. We’re a selfish bunch of idiots who would rather be slaves to foreigners (preferably caucasians because they make better genetic material) than build or own country. We’ve given up, can’t you see? All this talk about patriotism or whatever is just hypocrisy. I love Ninoy. I have been in the yellow wars in Makati, Liwasan and in EDSA. Sadky though, Ninoy and I and a million others were mistaken. Dying for Filipinos? That would just be a waste of life.

Marius Lardizabal

Tinatanog pa ba yan?!

Despite all our faults every filipino is worth dying for, no exceptions.

Every person has some good in them even the likes of Apo Lakay Marcos.

To the simple-minded folks pinning the blame on him for Ninoy’s death is a no brainer. Yet have they stopped and thought that by doing so, he had sealed his fate? No, Apo Lakay may have been blinded by the Imeldific devil but he by no means is a moron. There are more things than meets the eye, ika nga ng mga Transformers.

Isa pa rin sya sa mga pinakamatalinong pilipinong pinanganak sa mundo, ka-level ni Ninoy at Rizal, well that’s just my opinion of course.

If given a chance he would have listened to Ninoy’s Plan. Well at least that’s what the older folks would assume. I’m just an avid listener to Apo Lakay’s folklore.

Anyhow, time to move on. Heroes need not die in vain. Let’s stop the second guessing, let’s stop the bickering.

Ang mga kristiano marunong magpatawad at hindi nagtatanim ng galit. Kung si Pope John Paul II napatawad nya si Mehmet Agca na would-be killer nya, tayo pa kayang mga spectator lamang sa drama ng ating bansa?

Kabayan

MC_90,

Who says that the Executive Branch has integrity in the first place? Who says top people in government positions are the totality of the Filipino people and is equivalent to the integrity of our nation?

The administration does NOT equate to the Filipino and the integrity of the Philippine nation. They are just a part of the Philippine society; a part which must must NOT be IMMUNE to any investigations on anomalies. So far what they are good at are holding on to the double standard of justice and sweeping their anomalies under a rug.

If the investigation finds and holds them liable for anomalies, then these top people who are in cahoots in election fraud are actually the ones who are DESTROYING the Filipino people and integrity.

Now they’re preparing to do another set of cover-ups and hide under the skirt of their E.O. 464? Hmmm…

MC_90

Like what I have been trying to point out in my previous comments…who is not corrupt? Who has integrity? Who is credible? I always said that they are all the same…I am amazed though how idealistic you are in defending your idol…and like i said..as if you are with this people 24 hours a day..as you listen to every mord they say..or you are aware of every move they make….

The fact is…they are currently running the government…and What you and the oppositions are doing is definitely not helping the country nor the Filipino people…

Lets not close our eyes to Govt programs that are benefucial to our countrymen..

And again….They are all the same

MC_90

Marius…if you are not blaming marcos…then who are you blaming for Ninoys death???

Marcos may be one of the most intelligent filipinos ever…but He was also one of the most corrupt and have ordered the most murders and killings in the history of Phillipine Presidents.

You must be coming from the same Province as Marcos…for the way you praise him…He´s like a god to you…well for me…He was nothing but a bad experience our country ever had…I dont even want to mention anything about his wife…

MC_90

Carlo,

I agree with you…lets stop complaining…lets leave the country…lets work abroad…lets ear money…lets learn some more….then when the right time comes….We should go back to our country and start putting our words here into actions….

Bert

To: Carlo

Give your country 200 years more and it will not change for the better. That what you said? One of the reasons why that might be so are people like you. You abandoned your beloved ship at the first sight of a wave and flee to a foreign country with your tail between your legs. Some of your kind I know are being called grease monkey in their adopted country, and they love it.

wilz

Yes, Filipinos are worth dying for. But let me ask those who has posted their views. Did this people do something to alleviate or at least protect the integrity of their identities as Filipinos. We have said time and time again that our politicians are corrupt, did we even try not to be corrupt ourselves by not asking someone we know in any agency to solve our problems instead of doing it by our ownselves. Lets start correcting ourselves and be a good example to our children so that we can move on. Para tayong sirang plaka. Dada ng dada ng dada. Bury the past and lets move on, we are tired of old issues. Dont waste our time bickering. Lets move on!!!!!

OFW in Afghanistan

MC_90 What is your beef with Lacson? He is doing what you and I cannot do…take advantage of the platform that is available to him to question the corruption and the wrongdoings of this Administration. I think we should support him. Why…you should be angry because this administration is just robbing us the citizens everything that is important in the formation of our national character. What are we now in the eyes of the world…cheats and liars and corrupt..what a way to project the Filipino character to the rest of the world. Damn…I am furious. Instead of supporting people like Lacson and others, we mock them! I am really so sorry for you.

Carlo, leaving the country and migrating is not a solution to what we are facing as a country and as a people. What are you in the country you currently embrace? You are but a confused character. You got money…right! When are you going to reclaim your soul?

MC_90

OFW in Afghan area….You are one big naive and blind OFW hehehehe…EVERYBODY IS ROBBING US…EVERYBODY IS CHEATING ON US….AND IF YOU THINK LACSON IS DOING EVERYTHING FOR ALL OF US….MAGISIP KA ULI….ISA KA SA MGA TAONG NALOKO NI LACSON HAHAHAHAHAHA

Marius Lardizabal

To MC_90:

What’s with the angst kabayan? You don’t need to resort to character assassinations to make a point.

Yes I am a proud Ilocano. But no, not everyone from the kingdom of Ilocandia idolize Apo Lakay like me.

I just like him because of his traits both good and bad.

I mean come on, every high profile person in the world have done some pretty stupid things in their lives but almost always end up being adored in the end.

Take for example Mother Theresa, at some point in her life she had questioned God’s existence and had doubts about her faith, yet here we are today, we are on the process of canonizing her, teka canonized na ata di ko sure.

Same thing with Rizal, Rizal didn’t want an independent Philippines. That was the last thing he wanted for our country. Instead, he wanted us to be a province of Spain or something similar. He knew the filipinos couldn’t govern themselves. Yet here we are today, we made him our national hero.
How ironic is that.

As for the killings, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo another filipino hero, has Andres Bonifacio’s blood all over his hands but was he ever really antagonized about it, I’ve never read anything to disprove that.

As for Ilocanos not liking Apo Lakay, yes there are many. I’ve had friends and acquaintances who joined the CPP-NPA and CPLA for same reasons as other non-Ilocanos who did the same.

But my point is this, if we are to move on as a country, we should avoid divisive tones because it will only force each and every one to be on the defensive and silo-minded.

Marius Lardizabal

I forgot to address the blame question. No I don’t know who to blame and I don’t intend to find one. You know why? Simple, I am a mere spectator, I am not privy to such complicated matters.

I’m am just using logical reasoning to answer why up until today we have not found the masterminds behind Ninoy’s killing.

Apo Lakay Marcos being shrewd as he is knew that he will not gain anything by making a martyr out of Ninoy, plain and simple.

On the contrary, other folks such as the Imeldific devil, Ninoy’s brother-in-law Danding Cojuangco, Apo Lakay’s cousin Fidel Ramos and his side-kick Lakay Enrile would have or had much to gain from Ninoy’s death.

Again, all speculations as I am not privy to anything. That’s why I said there are more things than meets the eye.

Kabayan

OFW in Afghanistan,

We’ll just have to forgive some bloggers who are unable to properly reason out their side. Some reason out that all politicians rob us therefore you should not side with anyone but if you look this individual’s other posts, his heart is actually rabidly pro-administration’s. Diluting the Waters — A basic propa tactic which used to work in ages past but far passe, lame and uncreative for these times. ;)

MC_90

Kabayan…now you are making conclusions….just like a rotten politician…you are making stories..

ako

They are all after worth while the Filipino is dying.

OFW in Afghanistan

Naive, blind… what else can you label me of MC_90. This is what people who do not know how to reason out properly resort to. You believe in Gloria and her gang…do tell us why, support your thesis. You do not believe in Lacson, Chiz and others, I will be glad to hear from you…but I have to understand your position based on data and information…not labelling me and others. It does not work that way. We can do things better in this conversation.

MC_90

OFW in afghan area…

Did I say i believe in GMA and her Gangs???? I cant remember saying anything like that…my position since I began writing in this blog is ¨ADMINISTRATION AND OPPOSITION ARE ALL THE SAME…CHEATERS, CORRUPT, USELESS…INUTIL AT WALANG NAGAWANG MABUTI PARA SA BAYAN NATIN AT PARA MAPABUTI ANG BUHAY NG MGA PILIPINO¨…..You may read all my previous comments to confirm that….

I dont waste my time debating and defending these dirty and rotten politicians…because I know they are not worth it…why? because they havent done anything yet to make themselves worth it…and I dont want to be fooled….like you and others who would die to defend these rotten species of humankind….(If they are human)

GMA and her gangs are the ones sitting right now…obviously the opposition would love see the govt fail in everything…thats is why they stir everything up just to obtain their goals….and then the administration fires back to the opposition….THESE UNFORTUNATE EVENTS…ITS THE FILIPINO PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING…FILIPINO LIKE YOU AFGHAN BOY…..and you know what???

THEY DONT CARE AT ALL!!!!!!! THEY DONT CARE ABOUT YOU…EVEN YOUR IDOL DONT CARE ABOUT YOU!!!!

Thats a fact!!!!

Kabayan

Heheh puso niyo :)

Sometimes people make the slip even though they did not intend it:

Take comfort in the fact that nobody’s perfect :)

Kabayan

Careful when labeling fellow bloggers, comments may bite you back in the end.

A friendly advice … stick to issues and avoid labeling fellow bloggers.

mekong

For Kabayan:
I agree with you there that nobody’s perfect and people make the slip, that’s why let’s give GMA a chance…look GDP is at it’s highest at 7.0+…….wow….

d_1thing

Ask the big joker in the government if she is willing to build the toxic waste storage facility in her home province of Pampangga. Let us see if she is willing to die for the Filipinos. Afterall she strongly pushes for the ratification of JPEPA, her pet project with the Japanese. On the otherhand … who cares if she drowns in a drum of waste … she has wasted a lot of Filipino lives in the name of national security.

OFW in Afghanistan

The blanket accusations and labelling that you do is what concerns me, MC-90. For example, why say that all politicians are corrupt. Can’t we say that some politicians are good or probably good, whether from the administration or from the opposition. You should do a little bit of a homework before making such statements. For example, if you go to the website, you can click the names of this people and you would know the bills that they have enacted into law. Lacson’s was not bad at all. He has enacted 7 bills (principal author) into law, enrolled 4 bills (for signature of the President) and he has one bill pending for the bicameral conference. He has many other achievements. I do not want to use the space here. Noynoy has 7 bills enacted into law. What it does not say is whether he is the principal author. I agree with you though that many does not say what they have achieved…playing safe. And this is precisely what we should be carefully looking at and analyzing at our end. Blanket accusations and labelling do not lead us to anywhere. Let us do our homework.

And please, be a little gender sensitive, I can be a brother, a mother, a father, a sister…just address me as OFW in Afghanistan. Cheers!

Kabayan

mekong,

Ah Gloria did not make a slip, it is a consistent series of calculated abusive actions by her and her allies, check the list mekong.

She was already given a chance, like when she had formerly said that she would not run in 2004. Changing her mind, she did a 180 degrees and ran … no problem so far… then the Garci scandal, the E.O. 464, the E.O. 1017, de-facto Martial Law type of actions, Cha-cha and Bedol… to name a few.

Before 2004, she was given a chance and now she wants another chance again? Up to when … till 2020? That what happens when a person loves power so much, “Power Corrupts … Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely”

7% … wow? The problem is … who is benefiting from this?

A nation can grow 20% but if 99 percent of this 20% goes to a select few, how can that be a “wow”?

MC_90

OFW

Cant say some politicians simply because all politicians are corrupt..period!!!!

OFW in Afghanistan

The GDP at its highest is not because of GMA…please do not ever make that mistake. It is because of people like us who happened to have talents that employers abroad are willing to pay for. We would have preferred to work in the Philippines but not much jobs are available. If they are available, these are in fields where there are not much future for a career, not much to learn…one cannot grow or move vertically nor horizontally.

ricky

Noble principles and love for family and country but are worth dying for,but for filipinos as a people naaaaa……

OFW in Afghanistan

Yes, Ricky, Filipinos are worth dying for. I am still very much proud of being one. Maybe, my experience with the Filipinos that I meet in different parts of the world…inspiring me to tell the world that I am a Filipino…make me say so.

Those crooks and corrupt officials are not Filipinos. They only pretend to be Filipinos. If they are, they will not have the heart to cheat and rob the nation’s coffers. They do not know what it means to be a Filipino…not at all.

clipmaster

kung ang lahat ng filipino ay katulad ng ibang bloggers dito na nag aaway away lagi………

then sad to say……

the filipinos are not worth dying for…..
