Jose Velarde, pardoned by Jose Pidal’s wife

10/25/07

Posted under Philippine politics

We knew it was coming, but it came as a shock just the same.

Lira of Inquirer.net takes a first pass at the President’s decision to pardon convicted plunderer Joseph Estrada. My sentiments are summed up here, in the title line of this quick post.

    Hi, Maria Blanca again:

I love idealistic folks, specially one who is disgusted by corruption like me. If indeed you joined EDSA 2 because of your disgust for a president you perceive to be corrupt (who is not, can you tell?), then you are not the concern of my previous blog even if you are an elite, please read it again. My concern are those elites and elitists who go to great lengths pampering their ego, went to EDSA 2, at the instigation of Brutus, to bring down a man to his knees for mere perception that the man is stupid. Corruption was beside the point, given that all presidents who occupies the throne are just as corrupt, if not more so, but were given enough time, some more than enough, to prove their worth. I would like to make some correction though to what you stated: GMA and the military and political lapdogs did not joined the Elite Society during the rallies of EDSA 2, they went there to reap the rewards after the party was over.

I believe EDSA 3 is due. It’s time to oust PGMA. Unless she resigns (if she still has one miligram of decency left in her soul).

Once She & Kabayan Noli resign, the Chief Justice takes over. Is this the rule of succession? He will serve until 2010. If he does a good job, the people may elect him as President or become Prime Minister (if and when the Philippines shifts from Presidential to Parliamentary form of government) after his interim service.

Atty. Dennis Villa-Ignacio, the fearless & successful prosecutor in the 6-year Plunder Trial of the Ex. President, will serve as Justice Secretary. Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Finance and Individuals who have distinguihsed themselves in their fields gets to serve in the cabinet.

We can harness good, decent, talented and God-fearing citizens from say, winners of the Magsaysay Awards; Ten Outstanding Young Men Awardees, TOYM (does this award still exist?)

GK/Habitat CEO for Environment, lots from private sector and the academe.

The Justices of the Supreme Court, SandiganBayan Anti Graft Court, RTC and others in the Judiciary will remain as is. Former Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Jr. left a legacy of continuing cleansing of its ranks.

PGMA goes into exile over here in the U.S. or U.K. or Italy or France (like Pakistan’s Ex. Prime Minister Benasir Bhutto) while VP Noli de Castro goes back to ABS/CBN TV.

It may not be too far fetched. It may be the only salvation for the nation. Mga kababayan, what do you think ?

Mabuhay Po Ang Inang Bayan na sakalukoyan ay lumuluha ! Patnubayan Po Tayo Ng Maykapal.

P.S. What is the actual length of Rest House Detention at Tanay, Rizal of convict Ex. Pres. Joseph Erap Estrada (years-months-days)? Was it 6-6-6 or
    6-6-1 ?

    bert,

I take it you equate the elite with the learned (perhaps like the ilustrado of the Spanish era). Aren’t you also part of that class? Sorry if that’s off-topic.

I think you view EDSA 2 too simplistically. Erap’s mistake was not his lack of college degree (that’s too shallow a reason to ignite middle class uprising) but his lack of finesse. He shoved his corrupt practices onto Filipinos’ faces like soured cream pie. I mean he never bothered to hide it as Ramos (for one) did.

That was not all. His crucial mistake was that his greed or lack of managerial prowess prevented him from satisfying his underlings. Eventually, he just lost control of them including the military. Erap does not have the political savvy to rule in national politics where cunning power-hungry trapos thrive.

Those people who joined EDSA 2 have many different reasons like: power grabbing (GMA), switching owners to survive (military and political lapdogs), disgust for corruption, hope for better governance (idealistic folks like my slightly younger self) and protection of wealth (businessmen who want a stable economy for their sake). I believe Erap’s poor academic background had little to do with it. His stupidity may have been a significant factor though.

Well, we all have our personal thoughts.
