In my column today, I tried my hand at reading public opinion on graft and corruption under GMA — and why more people haven’t taken to the streets. (I actually did the reading last Thursday, before the Rotary Club of Manila, on the same day as the Trillanes caper.)
I sifted through the findings of three surveys, but essentially the attempt is a meditation on the latest (October 2007) Pulse Asia poll. These findings, in particular:
(Please click on the images to enlarge them.)
The conclusion I reached (and of course I am aware I could have gotten things fundamentally wrong) suggests that Ping Lacson’s latest attempt to disclose another corruption scandal still won’t force people out into the streets.
The lesson for regime-changers: Corruption scandals do not prematurely bring down an administration, but proof of something else entirely — brazen fraud, gross impunity, lewd dancing in the halls of the Senate.
This also suggests that suspending the high-profile Senate hearings on the ZTE case, where revelations not only of corruption but of obvious duplicity or gross arrogance were a real possibility, was a strategic mistake on the part of the opposition.
What do you think? More to the point, what kind of brazenness, similar to the “na-onse tayo” vote on the second Velarde envelope, would set the streets on fire?

You see that our dollars can be converted to fewer and fewer pesos, a fact you and your beloved gov’t. officials are proud of. You see that fewer pesos in our pocket is hardly enough to buy fewer galunggong, and just enough for a quarter kilo of sugar instead of a kilo. Because the so called improved economy you are crowing about had ballooned the prices of everything. And our wages remains in hybernation. That is the actual reality in this world your analytical mind cannot comprehend. You read what the ADB executives told your president, yeah, right. Those ADB executives who daily feasted on sirloin steaks and never heard of what a galunggong is, who bought sugar by the truckloads instead of a quarter kilo. And that’s because, as you said, GMA had taken some risks unpopular to all, which also make her unpopular to all, aside, of course, from other more serious reasons. And you don’t get those real reasons why that is so, inspite of your analytical acumen? And inspite of your level of intelligence as compared to our level of ignorance? I’ve seen most of inputs which are more of an entertainment rather analytical views.
The qualty of some of the arguments speaks of the level of ignorance among our kababayan’s in the reality of this world and politics.
Managing country is more complex and yet achievable. The important that you guys have to understand is the intent of certain decision. We know very well ( at least I know) that there is no decision in this world that is perfect. It is always a choice between the level of risk and returns. At least GMA take some risks eventhough it is unpopular to all , but hey look at the result. Even ADB’s executive are recognising it.
Our politocos including those in the Senate are the worst the we have. Perhaps, instead of criticisng GMA, why not point your gun at those Senators, Congressman and even local official that sleeping on their jobs. They don’t commit mistake because they don’t take any position on issues. At si GMA have guts to do it.
Kayo, meron ba kayo. Puro talk lang pero no Action. Parang NATO ( No Action Talk Only).

I voted for the opposition in the last senatorial elections. Initially, they were okey doing their jobs. However, after a few months, I was pssed and turned of because of the following issues that came out. First, the senate leadership and then senate inquiries without closing it. and so on…
I challenge the opposition to provide a concrete economic plan, a decent leader that can be on top of everything and show a unified opposition working together. Majority of FIlipinos already know that GMA is corrupt. That’s a given. On the other hand, Filipinos want an assurance that the opposition can provide a better economic plan in case they will be in power. Do these three issues i enumerated and I think it’s a sure fire formula for success in whatever undertaking the opposition will do plus the support of people power.
***************
You vote didn’t go to waste. They’re doing their job they suppose too. What concrate economist are you talking about. Ask Gloria Arroyo, Because she’s the one squatting in Malacanyang palace. Equally important for a regime change is the credibility of the person who will takeover the palace. The opposition is perceived to be equally corrupt and its rooster of presidentiables are balimbings and trapos to the core. The scenario of Sen. Lacson or Mayor Jojo Binay becoming President is enough to discouraged the middle class in joining another people power.

dalawa ang kulang sa opposition:
OJECTIVITY at CREDIBILITY
CREDIBILITY
Walang credibilidad ang taga opposition…bakit?
1. Nandaya daw angp residente, SINO BA ANG HINDI NANDADAYA SA ELECTION SA PILIPINAS? PATI SILA MANDARAYA
2. Magnanakaw daw ang presidente…SINO BA ANG D MAGNANAKAW NA POLITIKO NG PILIPINAS? PAREHO LANG SILANG MAGNANAKAW..MAS MALALA PA SILA
3. Kurakot daw ang administration ni GMA…EH SINO BANG ADMINISTRATION ANG HINDI KURAKOT? SUMAHIN NATIN MULA NUNG PANAHON NI AGUINALDO..SINO ANG ADMINISTRATION NA HINDI KURAKOT? PALAGAY KO YUNG KAY MAGSAYSAY LANG KASI NAMATAY SYA AGAD

(so the party-dancing - at the congress continues)
So I agree with BOPOLS, oppositions show somebody who can lead the country. Kung wala pa kayong naiisip, let me suggsest, FR.
so birong totoo, Fr. Joaquin Bernas, for President ng Transition Government tapos saka uli bumoto ang tao, siguro naman kahit paano matututo na tayo at makakapaglagay ng mga credible government officials during the transition.
so we dare the religious leaders out there, lumabas na kayo sa sutana nyo, nakakasuka na ang gobyernong ito, MAKE A CHOICE FROM YOUR GROUP, para matapos na ang pagsasaya at party sa congress sa dami ng perang bumabaha ngayon doon

a scandal and controversy ridden administration does not prelude to the withdrawal of support from the masses. in most cases if the current sitting administration happens to be preceded by a scandal and controversy ridden administration also. this negate the notion of the public from supporting another leadership change in the malacanang. for the many reason a deep cultural embeded attitude system — pride. not a single public official would naturally admitted mistake in supporting such moves and justifying a change in leadership was necessary then later on would backtracked because of difference.
in some instance take the case of former vice president teofisto guingona who was once a closes ally of president arroyo and who supported the later but had a fall-out that started on the visiting forces agreement with the united states because of his patriotic views. in the succeeding events ironically he was now identified in the camp of former president estrada whom he accussed of illegally pocketing kickbacks that eventually lead to estrada’s removal from malacanang. not a single public appeareances did the former vice president had acknowledge his mistake in supporting president arroyo and removing former president estrada from malacanang.
the three branches of the goverment are created so there would have a system of check balance. apparently privilege speech has been a launching pad of tirades. in the course of aid in legislation this has been abuse because of loopholes in the privileges speech one is entitle to at. tirade but lacking in key evidence does not gain the general support of the public, moreover if one would backtracked later on. thus loosing public interests and support.

How about, Legarda/Chiz/Trillanes? They’re my choice for President vice President.

Your vote to the opposition is not a waste. Because they’re doing everything in their power to do their job the suppose too. The only problem with that is Gloria Arroyo/cronies won’t let them do their job. she always block them so that the truth will not come out. And if they go to the street like Sen: Trillanes, & co. Did, They too be rotten in jail. They’re playing it safe. I hope I’m right on this one.
As I said before it doesn’t matter how you do to oust Gloria Arroyo, Is not going to prosper because she control these corrup/PNP/AFP/JUDGES which is they’re the one suppose to serve and protect the filipino people,. But they’re not. They’re only protecting the corrupt Gloria Arroyo!

For me the main reason why people did not take to the streets is because most Filipinos are still not convinced of the need to oust PGMA inspite of all the accusations hurled against her by the opposition and critics. In the first place, who will replace her in the event she is ousted? Trillanes? Erap? Jinggoy? Binay? Lacson? Can we be sure these people will not commit graft and corruption? In fact Erap was already tried and found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. On the “Hello Garci issue” we know that wiretapping is illegal and it cannot be used as evidence in any court of law. Regarding extrajudicial killings, it seems improbable that Arroyo ordered for these people to be killed.
Seguro if Trillanes had not surrendered and died fighting for his cause I feel that most people would be touched and flock to the streets but I doubt if they will succeed in ousting the President.

If they really follow rules of law; In the Philippines Gloria Arroyo, El. Al. Should be in jail because there is solid evidence against them. But, This will never happen because we have a corrupt justice system. As we all can see it. These judges suppose to follow the rules of law; But yet they’re the one shitting on it. How can you justify that.
December 5th, 2007 at 3:33 am
Thats exactly what’s gonna happen, On all the corruption under the fake president Gloria Arroyo, Dancing in the senate.
Because they’re going to use EO#464 to protect them. Nothing good will happen on all of this investation because Gloria Arroyo, Control the entire corrupt judicial system.
These people who suppose to protect and serve the filipino people the one prostituted the judicial system. How can you justify that.
I’ll say, Dancing in the street is more like it. If these idiots keep doing what they’re doing. Enough is enough. I had enough with this bogus President of cebu. Its time to ditch her out. Are you with me? I’m sure hope so! Viva edsa tress!!!

Ang tanong…Kung ako yung mapagktiwalaang witness na yun…LALAYAS NA LANG AKO SA PILIPINAS…KESA PABAGSAKIN KO ANG ADMINISTRATION…AT BUMAGSAK ANG ECONOMIYA…AT BIGYAN NG PAGKAKATAON ANG MGA TAO SA OPPOSITION PARA MAMUNO SA BANSA NATIN…WALA DIN MANGYAYARI..BAKA LUMALA PA…
SUSMARYOSEP!!!!

dalawa ang kulang sa opposition:
OJECTIVITY at CREDIBILITY
CREDIBILITY
Walang credibilidad ang taga opposition…bakit?
1. Nandaya daw angp residente, SINO BA ANG HINDI NANDADAYA SA ELECTION SA PILIPINAS? PATI SILA MANDARAYA
2. Magnanakaw daw ang presidente…SINO BA ANG D MAGNANAKAW NA POLITIKO NG PILIPINAS? PAREHO LANG SILANG MAGNANAKAW..MAS MALALA PA SILA
3. Kurakot daw ang administration ni GMA…EH SINO BANG ADMINISTRATION ANG HINDI KURAKOT? SUMAHIN NATIN MULA NUNG PANAHON NI AGUINALDO..SINO ANG ADMINISTRATION NA HINDI KURAKOT? PALAGAY KO YUNG KAY MAGSAYSAY LANG KASI NAMATAY SYA AGAD
4. Marami daw pinatay na militante sa administration ni GMA…EH SYMPRE KAHIT NA NPA ANG PUMATAY DUN SA MGA KADRE NILA…SASABIHIN PA DIN NG OPPOSITION NA MILITAR ANG PUMATAY para lang siraan ang administration
AT PINAKAIMPORTANTE SA LAHAT…ANG MGA NAGRARALY…AT GUSTO PABAGSAKIN ANG ADMINISTRATION….PURO MGA NASA MANILA LANG…PURO MGA GANID NA ….WALA NG IBANG GAWIN KUNDI ANG MANGGULO!!!!

evidence lang talaga ang kulang………..
yung bang tulad ng kay clarrisa ocampo…..
so far puro accusations lang………
