Dancing in the Senate

12/04/07

Posted under Philippine politics

In my column today, I tried my hand at reading public opinion on graft and corruption under GMA — and why more people haven’t taken to the streets. (I actually did the reading last Thursday, before the Rotary Club of Manila, on the same day as the Trillanes caper.)

I sifted through the findings of three surveys, but essentially the attempt is a meditation on the latest (October 2007) Pulse Asia poll. These findings, in particular:

(Please click on the images to enlarge them.)

The conclusion I reached (and of course I am aware I could have gotten things fundamentally wrong) suggests that Ping Lacson’s latest attempt to disclose another corruption scandal still won’t force people out into the streets.

The lesson for regime-changers: Corruption scandals do not prematurely bring down an administration, but proof of something else entirely — brazen fraud, gross impunity, lewd dancing in the halls of the Senate.

This also suggests that suspending the high-profile Senate hearings on the ZTE case, where revelations not only of corruption but of obvious duplicity or gross arrogance were a real possibility, was a strategic mistake on the part of the opposition.

What do you think? More to the point, what kind of brazenness, similar to the “na-onse tayo” vote on the second Velarde envelope, would set the streets on fire?

    Salina,
You’re dumber than i thought. Davide swore in GMA to prevent anarchy and chaos in the streets. When the position of the Pres was declared vacant, sino ba ang next in line according to the constitution? si Pimentel ba? or si Davide ba? nde! He precisely followed the rule of law as stated in the constitution. For the sake of your stupid arguments, please say MORE to entertain the readers!

John: She don’t care if you call her stupid. because she make more money than you!

    Hi, Cheers!

We are NATO, and you felt entertained by us. That’s good. But you sound so serious, as if our senseless yak didn’t entarteain you at all. You said our views are not analytical, you mean compared to your views? So, you are analysing the blogs of us ignoramus, and decided we are entertaining. Thanks. Maybe you are analysing so much, so much that you failed to see the real realities in this world and politics. Oh, of course you see the results, that’s easy to see. You see it, and you read it. You see that our dollars can be converted to fewer and fewer pesos, a fact you and your beloved gov’t. officials are proud of. You see that fewer pesos in our pocket is hardly enough to buy fewer galunggong, and just enough for a quarter kilo of sugar instead of a kilo. Because the so called improved economy you are crowing about had ballooned the prices of everything. And our wages remains in hybernation. That is the actual reality in this world your analytical mind cannot comprehend. You read what the ADB executives told your president, yeah, right. Those ADB executives who daily feasted on sirloin steaks and never heard of what a galunggong is, who bought sugar by the truckloads instead of a quarter kilo. And that’s because, as you said, GMA had taken some risks unpopular to all, which also make her unpopular to all, aside, of course, from other more serious reasons. And you don’t get those real reasons why that is so, inspite of your analytical acumen? And inspite of your level of intelligence as compared to our level of ignorance? Maybe Engkanto is right after all in agreeing with me that idiots like me and him are filling this world

Bert: They’re not talking about you. I’m the one they’re insulting because I can’t write english very well. They’re telling me to write tagalog instead. And not try harder on learning how to write english. These idiots are hypocrites! Atleast I’m doing my best to write english. How can I learn If I’m not going to try!

to clipmaster…you are right. foremost, we have to be true to ourselves. what is this reader’s objective in having different names? takot sa sariling image…to make it appear she/he has many readers in agreement w/ his opinions. sino ang mandaraya ngayon?
di ba sya rin si pandak & tell it like it is?

to loigialaarni….oo nga. dapat mag-tagalog na lang sya, nakakahilo ano?

to john…tama ka, we are being entertained by this writer w/ many aliases…

why do people refuse to go out into the streets? a columnist in standard said its bec. the opposition is equally morally bankrupt, hence people are wary of them as alternative to gma.
cory, trillanes 2X, priests, binay(kahit na may bitbit), black and blue movement, et.al…were unsuccessful in letting people out into the streets..
