The fact that former Senate President Jovito Salonga has expressed his thoughts
of equating GMA to FM is itself a proof that his opinion is not right.

During Marcos time, one cannot simply express his thoughts which are adversaria
l to the dictator without fear. Now, anybody can just speak anything without f
ear however the opinions are unfounded or basically lies.

I think that the President, who also has in mind the national security and who
is privy to intelligence data, should not let her guard down in these times whe
n the election fever is heating up, and in this world situation where terrorist
ic activities exist. If we always prevent the military from doing their jobs by
throwing raw charges at them or cast doubts on their motives, then, whom can w
e turn to?

Salonga is right. It's so obvious! Ever since that Hello Garci scandal, GMA has
done nothing but to curtail the rights of the ordinary people in order for her
to be able to stay in power. Rights which are guaranteed by the constitution.
GMA continues to trample these rights!

What is happening today is uncomparable to the Marcos's dictatorship...it is wo

We have to forgive Jovita Salonga for his comment about GMA.Due to his age fru

Your news ad today is unfair for it makes comparisons among Asian neighbors. Y
our comparison should be on the different Philippine regimes i.e. end of Marcos

Itâs good that opposing views are allowed for that can only mean press freedom.
Our country is rated the 2nd most dangerous for journalists after Iraq becaus
e of press freedom. So that ranking is another form of misperception.
Corruption would be difficult to address for now because of tradition. But at
least we have checks and balance to deal with them.
If fear grips because this administration intends to stay due to Charter Change
initiatives, then that can wait when a new administration takes over. The peo
ple in general are sick and tired of another impeachment complaint which appear
s to be the only purpose of the opposition.

I am an ordinary Filipino and I donât feel that my rights are being curtailed b
y GMA. I enjoy free speech, earn my living decently, go to places I want to vis
it, travel anywhere I want, easily obtain my passport, buy anything legal witho
ut hassles, exercise my faith without interference, throw parties without fear,
even talk freely about GMA in the most pejorative way and still I am alive, en
joying my life. What rights of ordinary Filipinos are curtailed?

Only those who want to grab power illegally or have sinister motives deserved t
o be worried. They are using democracy to do their undemocratic plans. Come on

t Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo urged ov
erseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on Tuesday to mark the country's 109th Independe
nce Day by joining the government in fighting poverty and corruption.

In Independence Day messages posted on the foreign affairs department website (
www.dfa.gov.ph), Arroyo said the new war being waged now is a campaign against
poverty and corruption.

"We are now waging another war, a campaign against poverty and corruption in ou
r country. Although you may be far from home, I know that you join our governme
nt and those you have left behind in these twin battles. And in our victory, ou
r heroes will not have died in vain," she said.

She added the country is now at the threshold of an economic miracle, with the
economy having grown by 6.9% in the first quarter of 2007, the highest in 17 ye
ars.

Arroyo said that the government will put in place the infrastructures needed to
attract more investments, create more jobs, and beat poverty, but it will need
OFWs' support.

"With your support, we will achieve a 7- to 8-percent growth rate in the next t
hree years," she said.

However, she did not outline to the OFWs how the government plans to fight corr
uption.

For his part, Romulo recalled the "historic thread" linking our forebears to ou
r country's modern-day heroes, the global overseas Filipino workers.

Romulo hailed OFWs for continuing to contribute significantly to our great task
of nation-building and development.

"And indeed at 109, the Philippines has grown deeper and deeper roots, firmly a
nchoring itself with the values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and glob
al partnership for peace and prosperity," he said.

He also said that as an independent nation, Filipinos have shown resilience and
remained unwavering in efforts to advance the welfare of the people.

Romulo reiterated the DFA's pledge to uphold the three pillars of Philippine fo
reign policy, which include national security, economic diplomacy and assistanc
e to nationals.

"As we renew this pledge today, we also call on all Filipinos throughout the wo
rld to renew their commitment to work together in order to achieve our collecti
ve aspirations for peace, prosperity and progress," he said. - GMANews.TV
