NOW that the votes have been cast, I think it's high time for us to reflect as
a nation, particularly on the processes, events and experiences of this electio
n.
Worth pondering is the amount of money involved in this election. With millions
of Filipinos living below the poverty level, millions of families struggling t
o survive a day, it is a sin, if not a crime for candidates to have sp
ent hundreds of millions of pesos for election propaganda materials. Several ph
otos from INQ.net and reports from TFC show sophisticated posters and expensive
TV adverts, obviously costing candidates a lot of money, not to mention the en
vironmental harm production of such materials might have caused.
ay from the use of the word "politician" as it means nothing to me!) sa gan
In London where I currently reside, propaganda materials come in the form of e-
mails or correspondences that come by post, simply stating candidates' views on
important issues, together with their qualifications.
Likewise, I think it's high time for stakeholders -- state, media, church and t
he academe -- to pool their resources together and come up with an honest-to-go
odness voters' education program. That is, if we all share the same dream of pu
shing this country forward. It is obvious how a lot of candidates are exploitin
g our countrymen, banking on their desperate state of poverty and ignorance and
yes, for all the world to see! Shame, really.

tic and nationalistic naman for a change.. and you will change the lives of you
God bless us!
i'll give you one concrete example mate!
just visit any one provincial assessor's office, bir office, or registry of dee

see if you can find a single photocopy machine in any one of them. that is how
useless our government is. they can spend millions for cheating but they can't
afford to buy a 15000 pesos photocopy machine.
In theory, I agree with your suggestion. The problem, however, is that the inst
itutions you mentioned are politicized, too. Each of them has some vested inter
ested in who wins. So, I am not surprised that nothing will come out of your su
ggestion. The only way for real change to happen is to have one of the prominen
t members of the Philippine society do something so drastic, as dramatic as Gan
dhi's decision to go on a hunger strike. It's so sad that Cory, the wife of a t
rue hero, or Noynoy, the son of the true hero, has not really taken time to ref
lect - yes, reflect - on what her husband, his father did for the country. He c
ould have stayed in the USA, and lambast Marcos. What he did was just as histor
ic, significant, and drastic as Gandhi's satyagraha. We can come up with as man
y good ideas as to how this country should be stirred as we want. Ninoy could h
ave done that. But, he didn't. He took action: he sacrificed his life. He had p
olitical and moral will to act. No one has the balls to follow suit.
elections over and it's time to reflect!
did we value our elections? oh yes of course! did we exercise our rights? may b
e yes and may be not.
the point is: are the voters intelligent and prudent enough whom to vote or are
we overcome by the more numerous low educated, underprivileged voters who sell
s without second thoughts their votes? exceptions are always noted of course!
if we dreamed of progress, then we must be at the right track, working positive
ly side by side leaving our selfish ambitions behind and putting ourselves into
a new person whose goal is to create a positive atmosphere of sincerity, trust
and cooperation.
what more can be added?
