It’s Armored Core … But Better!
Armored Core 4, the latest in the AC series, enters the next-gen realm with mixed results. Fans of the series will adore its next-gen graphic overhaul and snazzy new effects, but newcomers and casual gamers may find AC4 another mediocre mech title.
AC4’s gameplay takes a turn for the best as this third-person shooter incorporates a much better boost system. No longer does the boost gauge deplete when on ground, allowing for faster and fiercer mech combat, making running almost a useless thing to do.
Further improving this design is how AC4 takes its cue from many animé inspired moments. The faster gameplay is complemented by spectacular effects and explosions made possible by the assortment of weapons available.
The strong point of this title still remains in its mech building portions. It gets a little too complicated for new players who just want to duke it out with other mechs on the get-go, but for long-time fans, they are treated to the same familiar setup introduced by the previous AC titles with the inclusion of newer weapons and parts, of course. So spending hours deciding what’s the best arm to equip for a certain mission is really nothing out of the ordinary. Since this is always the case for gamers looking for the best balance between range and close combat.
Unfortunately, many of AC4’s flaws are carried over from previous titles. The overly convoluted storyline, simple mission and level designs, and lack of any next-gen physics and destructible body parts keep this title under many gamer’s radar.
Neverhteless, AC4 is still a huge improvement over other AC titles, thanks to its faster gameplay and a much-needed graphical facelift. Sure, this title won’t catapult the AC series out of cult status, but for those gamers who have the patience to lug through its complicated setup and simple design structure will definitely find a truly entertaining gaming experience.
