Riviera ends Forest Hills winning streak

RIVIERA ended the five-match winning streak of Forest Hills in a home game, 3.5-1.5, to send the race for the two automatic semifinal berths wide open in the Federation Golf League matches in various venues recently.

The pairs of Chay Moreno-Brixton Aw and Joe LaO-Pepot Inigo provided Riviera with two early wins in the aggregate and high-low matches before Eric Gozo-Danny Pizarro secured the win by taking scramble point.

Bobby Celestino-Alfonso Quitangan also halved the greensomes point to complete the Riviera win that avenged Silang-based golfers their 2-3 loss when they played at Forest.

The two now share the top spot in Group III at 12 points on similar 5-1 win-loss records, five big points ahead of Eastridge which scored a 5-0 sweep of Mimosa in the tourney sponsored by Gargol, Immuvit/Pascual Laboratories, ABW and Spa 6750.

Valley made the week’s biggest move after a 5-0 rout of winless defending champion Manila Southwoods and a 3-2 conquest of Malarayat to join a three-way tie for second in Group I.

Ryan Lam-Boni Sumbilla, Boy Blue Ocampo-Art Fontanilla, Carlo Carpio-Ray Puyat, Adrian Mauricio-Zaldy Villa and Joey Quimson-Kevin Lachica pulled off the wins for Valley, which trails Highlands by just a point.

The Division II battle likewise remained very tight after host Camp John Hay battled Royal Northwoods to a 2.5-2.5 draw and Orchard continued its comeback after a 4-1 trampling of Canlubang.

Northwoods leads at 11 points followed closely by Sherwood Hills at 9, Canlubang and John Hay at 8, Wack Wack at 7 and Orchard at 5 going into this week’s matches.

Eastridge, meanwhile, kept its flickering hopes of advancing alive with a rousing sweep of Mimosa behind the efforts of Koji Yasuma-Rading Decipeda, Henry Lacuna-Alex Ignacio, Jung Su Park-Jasper Kawachi, King Sumulong-Kim Bun Sik and Roberto Eusebio-Kim Ryung Il.

Dela Paz shares fourth at Torrey Pines junior golf tournament

SAN DIEGO, California ‑ Bambee dela Paz birdied two of the last four holes for a three-under-par 71 at the Torrey Pines north course Friday (Saturday in Manila) and a respectable share of fourth place in the Callaway Junior World golf championships here.

The 17-year-old dela Paz made a good account of herself in her final stint in this annual competitions for junior 17 years and below with her best score in four days and her third sub-par effort that should have been noticed by scouts of top universities looking for talents.

Dela Paz figured in a four-way tie for fourth with her 292 total in the best performance so far by an entry from RP since Dorothy Delasin, now an LPGA standout, won in 1999. Jennifer Rosales also won the same division in 1996.

Ha Na Jang pulled off a sensational 10-stroke romp with a 15-under 281 total for 72 holes after a closing five-under 69. The Korean beat American Danielle Frasier and Rikako Morita of Japan who tied for second after a 76 and 75, respectively.

Only 15 years old, Jang also gave a hint of the future for her rivals in the next two years since she will still be eligible until 2010.
Cyna Rodriguez, who was also among the leaders in Round 1, wound up sharing 13th. She scored a 75 for 301.

The 40-strong Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines delegation supported by Philippine Airlines, PCSO, Callaway/Electrobus, Intel, Inquirer Golf and Philippine Sports Commission will be going home with two runner-up trophies won by Dottie Ardina in the girls 13-14 and Mia Legaspi in the girls 7-8.

Bernice Olivarez-Ilas (girls 6 under) took third, Princess Superal (girls 11-12) wound up fourth while Andie Unson (girls 9-10) and Ashya Nocum (girls 6 under) posted fifth place showings for the other Top 5 showings by RP entries. They will be seeded into next year’s meet and need not go through the local qualifying.

Ardina, Legaspi settle for second in San Diego tourney

SAN DIEGO, California–From a triple kill to a triple letdown.

Dottie Ardina failed to sustain a searing rally while Mia Legaspi squandered a five-shot lead as the Philippines settled for a pair of runner-up finishes in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in various courses here.

The 13-year-old Ardina lost the girls 13-14 years title by one stroke to Victoria Tanco of Argentina despite a birdie-birdie windup, wasting a big rally from four shots down with a bogey on the 15th hole that told heavily on her bid for a third victory here.

Legaspi appeared on her way to a title repeat in the girls 7-8 years as she led by five after seven holes. But an eagle by eventual winner Angel Taingi Yin of the United States on the eighth against her bogey led to a three-shot swing that started a sputtering finish for the defending champion who bogeyed four of five holes from the 10th.

Ardina’s tournament-best three-under 69 gave her a 212 total for 54 holes, barely missing a playoff with Tanco who completed a wire-to-wire win with a 72-211 at the Sycuan Resort. Legaspi ended up with a 63-180 against the 57-176 of Yin.

Even Bambee dela Paz, the second round leader in the 15-17 years division for the Philippines, lost control.

She could only score a three-over 77 after a pair of two-under rounds the first two days and dropped to a tie for fifth at Torrey Pines North. Dela Paz will be joined by Cyna Rodriguez and Regan de Guzman in today’s last round.

Rodriguez tallied 76-226 for a share of 13th while de Guzman carded a 77 for 231. Bernice Olivarez-Ilas wound up third in 6-under play, Princess Superal placed fourth in the girls 9-10 category and Andie Unson checked in fifth in the 11-12 division for the Philippines’ other worthy finishes.

Marcel Puyat was the best performer among the boys of the RP delegation supported by PAL, PCSO, Electrobus/Callaway, Inquirer Golf and Intel. He finished tied for 11th in the 13-14 years category.
