These things I learned from Wall-E

Husbo's Wall-E

Don’t be afraid to reach out. Wall-E had no idea what Eve was, but he knew in his gut (if he had one) that he wanted to be her friend. She intrigued him. Despite her efforts to ward him off, he persisted in reaching out to her, and eventually built a good friendship with her.

It’s so easy to shut off yourself from people, from the world. It doesn’t take much effort to go “Hey, you don’t want me? Fine.” While there’s a threshold to how far we can take our persistence, we wouldn’t really know when and where that is unless we keep reaching out. Are you still afraid to do so? Maybe someone’s waiting for you to make the first move.

Share. I loved the scene where Wall-E was showing off his collections to Eve. Whether it was as simple as a spork or as grand as a musical on film, he enjoyed sharing them with Eve. She didn’t know what they were, but just having someone to appreciate these collections with made Wall-E happy.

Alone time is good. Doesn’t it feel refreshing to just hole up in a room in your pajamas and read a book? Or just put on those headphones, play a game on the XBox and pretend the rest of the world didn’t exist? Solitude is lovely, but having someone to share those interests with is even better. I love listening to my husband talk about his boxing techniques, even though I don’t know much about the game’s technicalities. He enjoys listening to me rave about my Sims, even though he doesn’t play the video game.

Reading is a wonderful solitary activity. But isn’t it wonderful when you meet people you can talk about the book with? Share your interests, share your ideas! In the course of sharing, you may even discover a new interest and meet like-minded individuals too.

A true friend stands by you no matter what. Wall-E never gave up on Eve. The times he took her out to see the sunset, on a boat ride, when he sheltered her from the rain and snow… these are the moments that make a good, solid friendship. When was the last time you went out on a limb for a friend? It’s always a nice thing to be reminded of this.

You don’t have to be alone. This sums it all up for me. Wall-E could have gone on packing trash in his tummy and making recycled buildings, but he chose to stay true to his friend Eve. Again, alone time is good, but making connections with others is even better. Even if it’s just a little message over SMS, laughter exchanged over a telephone call, it feels good to be a part of something bigger, something out there.

“Did you think that your feet had been bound
By what gravity brings to the ground?
Did you feel you were tricked
By the future you picked?
Well come on down…

We’re coming down to the ground
There’s no better place to go
We’ve got snow upon the mountains
We’ve got rivers down below
We’re coming down to the ground
To hear the birds sing in the trees
And the land will be looked after
We send the seeds out in breeze…”

– from “Down to Earth” by Peter Gabriel

Another lesson for me, aside for caring for mother Earth, we must watch out the grams before it’s too late. I gota little panicky to see all of us like the “healthy” humans comprising the population in the future. Although visually, those were cute in the movie. =)

Ah yes! Let’s get off our chairs more often!

Rach (Heart of Rachel)

This is a wonderful post Toni. We enjoyed watching the movie.

I also admire Wall-E’s remarkable character. He is a kind and very loyal friend. He will go to all lengths just to protect a friend.

Hi Rach! Thanks for the visit. I love Wall-E! :) I didn’t mind the love story at all, but what resonated with me was his loyalty, yes.

rhea

wow… i love your post.
aside from taking care of mother earth, and what will it be like if we just took our mother earth for granted and let technology rule us… make us unhealthy, obese people… yes… WALL-E is such a SWEET robot. His feelings are genuine for Eve… esp their friendship :)

Thanks Rhea! :) Yup the other message is the ecological one. Let’s take care of the earth… and ourselves! Fight obesity. :D

I haven’t watched the movie, yet it sounds interesting.

Even if I haven’t seen the movie I can relate to your article especially about sharing and being not alone. There was a time in my life wherein I can’t find a way on how to improve my writing skills and on how to build confidence in writing. I have my own blog but it seems it was so dry. The only answer for my misery is simply to share my blog to my close friend who also loves to write.

We now have a blog wherein we write together about a weekly topic we did choose. I have my own page and she has also her own too. We just started it last month and we let our common friends and co-workers at the office read our blog. We receive positive and negative feedbacks about our “joint project” from them. The feeling is so great. We now have something to look forward to every week!

Indeed if you share some, you will surely receive some. And the best part of it my loneliness is gone.

Hope you can make a visit to our site. More power!

May God bless you Toni!

That shared blog is a very interesting idea. I loved how the sharing helped fuel your creative juices. More power to it! I’ll drop by your blog soon.

Jo An

At the start of the movie, my kids and I were bored. Parang nagtaka kami sa setting ng movie. And then thinking na sya lang mag-isa ang character, akala namin hindi maganda yung movie. But sa kalagitnaan, nag-enjoy na kami… Parang ang simple lang ng movie pero ang ganda. As nice and touching as your posts…

Maraming salamat Jo An. :)

wow! your so positive, and so is the movie! i thought the movie was just for kids (i watched it with my 4 yr old son) but through the course of the film i thought that this movie has a message and you could actually learn from it. who would thought that in the next future the earth will be filled with trash and that we have to evacuate it in order to survive. scary but it might happen not on this generation but maybe with the next one.
wall-e is a robot who has great feelings and character as compared to irresponsible individuals who call themselves humans. =)

It was a great movie yes! So much emotions even if the characters were all robots. :D
