PC Magazine Philippines and Game! Magazine have been ranked the top two most widely read te
chnology magazines in the country today, according to the results of the Synova
te Media Atlas Greater Manila survey released September 14, 2006.

Synovate, a leading global market intelligence company, recently completed the
first industry-backed survey that provides comprehensive information on the spe
nding patterns and media habits of consumers in Greater Manila.

According to the Synovate survey PC Magazine Philippines reaches 157,703 reader
s, making it number one in the technology category. Following closely in second
place is the three-issue-old Game! Magazine, the Philippinesâ first online gam
ing magazine, with 148,873 readers. Both titles are published by Hinge Inquirer
Publications (HIP), an Inquirer Group company.

The local version of PC Magazine is the recognized bible and reference publicat
ion of the computer industry here and abroad. PC Magazine Philippines incorpora
tes the latest and most locally relevant material from its foreign counterparts
, but also focuses on subject matter made by and for the Filipino PC aficionado
, a combination appreciated by its readers, according to the Synovate results.
Game!, on the other hand, focuses on the fastest-growing tech lifestyle categor
y today â online gaming, particularly on locally available games.

Synovate Media Atlas tracks local print media habits, spending patterns, produc
t ownership, lifestyle, attitudes and values across the expanding upper income
groups of Asia.

Synovate Head of Media Research, Steve Garton, said the firm had built on its a
lready respected media work across the region in undertaking Media Atlas for th
e Philippines' media industry.

"With proven methodology that optimizes access to middle and upper class consum
ers, Synovate's media research is already used by the world's top media owners
to communicate the value of Asia's affluent to advertisers.

"Synovate now offers this same robustness to the Philippine media industry by e
xtending its experience and methodology to Media Atlas," he said.

It just feels right that a magazine publishing company known primarily for its
tech titles comes up with its own online portal. Finally.

Hinge Inquirer Publications, better known by its acronym HIP (
which also, incidentally, is a word that connotes its basic outlook in life), o
fficially starts its portal and online operations with this herculean effort.

Short history first, folks. We started as Hinge Media Inc., or
HMI, about three-odd years back. We knew nothing about magazine publishing, bu
t we didnât let that stop us. First we began publishing something called <stron
g>The Reviewer, which, uh, reviewed things. Books, movies, music, food
, gadgets, computers, fashion, consumer products - everything under the sun.

We loved our little tech toys, so pretty soon one of The Reviewerâs sections de
veloped a life of its own, and eventually became its own title: Mobile
Philippines, better known back then by its nickname mPH</stron
g> (we love nicknames here). It dealt with mobile technology, and everything th
at term involved: laptops, cellphone, PDAs, MP3 players, accessories, software,
etc. In other words, all the cool stuff.

After doing Reviewer and mPH, we found we lik
ed making magazines. In fact, we loved it. So we added more. We loved computers
, so we acquired the local franchise for PC Magazine, the comp
uter industryâs 20-year-old bible. We loved golf, so we made a golf magazine ca
lled Swing.

You notice loving something plays a big part in everything we do. In fact, that
âs one of our core philosophies. Get the guys who love this stuff, whoâd do it
even if we didnât pay them, to do the mag. (Donât worry, thatâs just a fib; we
pay the gang.) Get the guys who know this stuff the best â the experts, the mav
ens. You donât believe, google the names of our staff, and see what you get bac
k. This way you get the best in the field. Ergo, you make the best mags. Hinge
Media later partnered with the countryâs largest major news organization â the
Philippine Daily Inquirer, folks who love making newspapers. S
o we became Hinge Inquirer Publications, barely three years into our existence.

A year later, we have more titles than we barely know what to do with. Aside fr
om the existing ones, we changed one or two, and added some more. Swing
became Golf Digest Philippines, the local franchise
of the biggest and most authoritative golfing publication in the world. Bothere
d by the predominance of hard-edged rock, we made an intelligent and entertaini
ng music magazine that covers all the other bases as well, local and foreign -
from pop to jazz, from classical to metal, from rap to acoustic and beyond:<str
ong> Burn.

Understanding that online gaming is the wave of the future, we created Game Mag
azine, which is the only local electronic gaming title around. We acquired the
most influential foodservice magazine as well â F&B World, and
its wonderful supplement Baking Press. Yum.

Aside from these mags, we do the in-house and corporate materials of some of th
e countryâs top companies, and much more. As of this writing, we are on the eve
of launching a couple of new titles as well: SME Insight, a p
ractical guide on business for small-to-medium enterprises, and Spark!<
/strong>, a fun science learning tool for the kids. Early next year, we have a
few more up our sleeves; just you wait.

We also pride ourselves in looking forward â weâre on the cutting edge of conte
nt creation for new media. At the moment weâre producing podcasts, videocasts a
nd lots of downloadable content for your phones and computers.

On the whole, weâre doing things the way it should be done, in a cool and smart
way. Like this portal, and the blogs and websites it contains, and of course o
ur events and activities, and ultimately our magazines, where there is passion
in every page.

Thatâs how we like it.

Thatâs what HIP is about.

And thatâs what being hip is.
