Sta. Elena Elegance

IT’S ALWAYS EASY to accept a three-putt miscue on greens that are manicured year-round to frustrate and make you salivate.

But it was not for Iggy Clavecilla on a day when everything just turned out right as he ended up beating up black-and-blue a course which had most of its defenses in place.

For the ordinary players, one bogey hardly meant anything specially if you’ve got a lot already.

Not Iggy. Two eagles and seven birdies for 17 holes and then, a three-putt bogey.

“Seems like I can still shoot my age,” said Iggy whose 62 from the blue tees came like a UFO that stung everyone else playing in the 14th edition of the Sta. Elena Cup.

How an old man like Iggy—who is 61 for the record—can still work some magic on a course too punishing for club regulars is just amazing.

So because of Iggy, everyone thinks there is hope somewhere. Could it be the blinding colors of his apparel?

For some reason, it is. Take the case of Hedy See and her daughter Hannah Sy.
Like Iggy and his partner Mari Hechanova who won themselves the low gross award right on the first day with that 62, Hedy and Hannah won Class A in flying colors. The motto was to look and feel good with the red shade.

Red was also a significant color for Angie Co and Oliver Gan who both roared like tigers with sub-par rounds for each, lifting the giant Sta. Elena Cup trophy as overall winners among the 270 teams.

Terry Capistrano and Manny Salgado (favorite color green as true-blooded Lasallians) might have turned blue when they were introduced by the emcee as Team Ateneo on their way to the podium for their Class C trophy.

The emcee is now hoping the tournament’s no-give rule on the greens won’t apply to his faux pas.

NOTES: the Sta. Elena Cup might have to introduce a side-event next time, a fashion competition. Noticeable was the way partners dressed up to the max and gave the judges for the best costume award a big headache … after introducing the no entry fee, no giveaway concept last year, it was the seamless organization for Junie Ledesma’s team this time. There were no registration hassles, the staff handing over to the player a tournament packet as he enters the clubhouse … the awards ceremony was one big family affair as usual attended by no less than 600 guests even with the waiver of the presence requirement for the raffle. Chef Joseph Go’s combination of Asian and Filipino cuisine … even the most generous pin placements on the 7th and 17th holes did not yield a hole-in-one, leaving the P2.9 million IS300 of Lexus untouched.
