the wrath of typhoon ondoy served as the final exam for the graduating arroyo administration. what ondoy has proven is that arroyo adminstration is not making their homeworks. they dismally failed the exam and has to receive the âkalabasaâ award. the typhoon proved them weak and as usual can not coup-up with disasters. even her military performed awfully helpless. their assets were no longer in plain view. this i am sure due to massive corruption committed by their generals. i could still recall during the golden days of the new society of whom they called corrupt as marcos. in disaster like this, the military could readily display thier amphibious equipment. but last saturdayâs ondoy onslaught, they are nowhere to be found. i could readily conclude it is because of corruption. poor filipinos. because of their permissiveness, they suffer a bitter fate
blame it on climate change? what contributes to climate change again? why do we experience climate change? the answer is because of us. Don't blame it on the environment. tsk tsk.
....calling for the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, which is being blamed for contributing to climate change.
stated in the article itself and it's just one of the reasons.
start preserving the environment. like what people in Arayat, Pampanga said in TV Patrol, STOP CUTTING DOWN on TREES. tsk tsk
Here we go again, attributing something complex and tangible (adverse weather conditions) to something that is easy if far fetched (climate change). Based on this kind of (specious) reasoning, one might as well have blamed solar activity, terrestial magnetic disturbances and gravitational anomalies in our part of the galaxy. The point is that to blame chaotic phenomena of the types cited for a very specific event, is akin to freezing a very complex system in order to isolate that one variable which our minds are able to grasp (fossil burning). In short, we are grasping at things in order to fit our preconceived notions of cause and effect. It could still be true, but could also be wrong.
Why isn't this a wash? The reason is that there are simpler explanations for this disaster that just visited the country than global warming: lack of discipline in matters of waste handling and disposal; lack of political will to enact drastic if comprehensive solutions that transcend geographical and spatial boundaries; and lack of funds (partly leaked offed by corruption) to spend on serious infrastructure that can address these age old problems. Simpler yes, but extremely difficult to get a handle on, not because they are as complex as terrestial anomalies (for they are not), but because they require radical shifts in the way people think and the behavioral changes that are required to effectuate them. Not that an oddity of weather this extreme could have vitiated the effects, but certainly it can be claimed that had these latter contingencies been done, the damage and suffering would not have been as dire. That kind of statement would have more meat than something which tries to blame an open ended nature for such devastation.
What this latest disaster (along with those of recent ones such as maritime accidents and landslides, etc) shows is that a country that has traveled so far along the "failed state" path is going to be more prone to such natural disasters than otherwise. A people that elects rogues and appoints nincompoops to positions of power year in and year out, and remain oblivious to their adverse consequences on their welfare, will sooner or later get its due. Such escapism and lack of accountability will
exact their cost in terms of suffering.
It is unfortunate that this kind of direct connection is not as highlighted as that between the weather and climate change. If this tragedy makes Filipinos reconsider this cause-effect, then at least their sufferings would lead to something useful towards their future.
Why blame the climate?
Put the blame on you. We brought it upon us, these kinds of tragedies.
Flood and landslide, we are responsible for these tragedies.
Only the weak and helpless point the blames to others (like weather and government)
In the first place we are the ones responsible to climate changes.
The Energy Collective website features an article by Simon Donner, a Canadian climate change researcher at Princeton University.
http://theenergycollective.com/TheEnergyCollective/48738
In it, Donner cautions his readers, "The effort to draw a link between climate change and tropical storms during a rather middling storm year (in terms of power) is scientifically questionable. When the storm in question has had such a terrible human toll, it is also a bit tasteless."
Let's not blame Climate Change for what happened to the people of Metro Manila during Ondoy.
Climates change all the time. It's nothing new. One of the theories taught in schools when I was growing up was that the Philippine archipelago used to be part of a network of land bridges, linking Australia with mainland Asia. Most of those supposed land bridges are now underwater.
Continents have come and gone. Islands have sunk and sprung up since time immemorial, long before the industrial revolution and the anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gasses.
Everyone should do their best to cut carbon emissions, but not because this will somehow stop climate change. People should do this, because such gasses are carcinogenic health hazards.
Climates will change regardless. If people think that cutting down man-made carbon emissions will stop the climate from changing, they will only be sorely disappointed. This will then only discourage people from trying to cut down their deadly carbon emissions.
Governments have allowed developers to build and sell properties where swamps, marshes and estuaries used to be. Most of the geographical features that historically helped channel would-be floods have been turned to subdivisions and shopping malls.
The Good Book teaches that the wise person builds his house on rock, so as to withstand changes in the climate. Let's not blame changes in the climate for what happened during Ondoy.
I was about to comment on this article when I saw Victor's comment which is exactly my sentiments.
People will blame everything else except what is directly exactly in front of them when they look at the mirror. If people will just do what is right and not because its the easiest thing to do then we will be better off. Take for example simple things like garbage. Look at what people do when they get their ticket stubs at the Tollways - they throw it out the window to the street. Nakakainis....Naku...Look at what people do with the Mcdonald wrappings after they eaten - they throw it at garbage blocked estero...STUPIDITY - thats what will kill this country - not the typhoons or calamities....
Man made climate change is a myth. It's been proven that many of the so-called statistics proving man made changes in our climate were actually biased or rigged to produce the outcomes they wanted. Climate change is a reality but it is not man made. Rather, it's part of the natural cycle of this planet more influenced by our sun's solar energy rather than man's. We have as much power preventing climate change than we do keeping the next winter from coming. Instead of wasting our finite resources on something we have no control over, I suggest we invest on science that can help us cope better with adverse weather disturbances like Ketsana. Improve the devices that monitor these systems and improve the services that respond during the aftermath. That would be money well spent.
it is because of the CLIMATE CHANGE. YOU know the reason why? It's because of US. US!US! No climate change will occur if we didn't destroy our nature. Look, Mother Nature strikes back. And now we can feel her anger against all those who take advantage of her. We are stewards of the earth and whatever we get fomr here, we should replace. Besides, if all filipinos are deeply educated - knows proper hygiene and proper waste disposal, sensitivity for the environment - we wouldn't experience such catatrophe. Right now, all we do is rise up, take care of nature to prevent, at least, next disaasters that are to attack the country. But how are we to prevent it - the typhoons, earthquake, tsunamis, if we the ones who make this disasters attack us?
typhoons as strong - or even stronger - than Ondoy and Pepeng have been occurring since time immemorial - even before man evolved. and floods are natural occurrences so natural that it is as natural as earthquakes * o.0 *... and, climate changes constantly...
the flooding incidents in metro manila are nothing but a result of poor urban planning, basura, basura, basura at walang humpay na basura, undeveloped sewage and flood/rainwater system, and our ignorance about a river system...
marikina and pasig are floodplains of two large rivers: Marikina river and pasig river... large rivers require large floodplains... if we only understand what that means, then we wouldnt be stupid enough to build our houses in such areas... let the rivers flow, not obstruct it, kasi if we do, talo tayo...
Climate Change made the typhoons in the south pacific very destructive. Typhoon Ketsana made a lot of mess in Philippines and Vietnam
Absolutely great man! I posted some comments before anyway, because a lot of your stuff is really awesome. If interested in link exchange pls contact me.

We have to stop blaming climate change for every natural calamity which strikes the earth. Most disasters are man-made, we should first ask ourselves who and what actually is causing climate change?. What can we do? we cannot stop the population from increasing, it is a natural process, so though in a planned manner population is going to increase. We are destroying the nature in the name of meeting the growing demands of the people, it is a fact that we have to depend on our natural resources but are the authorities concerned in the project taking care of the disposals too? We have the habit of blame game but ultimately all of us have to realize that it is better to be logical and be prepared with enough precautions in case of dangers and also try not to strip off Mother Nature in such a way that her wrath becomes too much for us to bear.

ncluding the Philippines. Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaigner Amalie Obusan said in a statement that the disaster in the Philippines had to happen in between two international climate change meetings, the recently concluded G20 Summit and the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Summit.Tulsa Courthouse
