Guess who’s running against Bistek?

By Veronica Uy

The colossal fight in the biggest city in the metro has taken an interesting turn. For some months now, Quezon City residents have come to accept the idea that long-time QC public servant Herbert “Bistek” Bautista is going to run for the top QC post.

And for some months too, it is said that uber-rich Congresswoman Annie Susano of the city’s second district would also be gunning for Quezon City mayorship. (Once, in one of the President’s controversial trips abroad which was criticized for the number of um, “congressional aides,” in the entourage, she told reporters asking her about it, “The government did not pay for my trip. I paid for my trip. I can afford it. I can even buy the plane that took me here.”)

Naturally, despite his years of service, the former Kaluskos Musmos star was said to be preparing himself mentally for a bruising battle that is sure to cost lots of moolah—something he doesn’t have a-plenty. He was said to be relying on his track record, performance, and his showbiz background (for the par-for-the-course glitzy endorsements required in Philippine politics).

But guess who is joining the fray now? Political watchers in the city were all agape when former Presidential go-to guy Michael Defensor allegedly stepped into the QC political ring, carrying a huge, heavy bayong (a big traditional Filipino bag usually used when going to the wet market).

Times are changing. The people are a bit discriminating now especially in Metro Manila. They will go for the honorable and principled type who will make himself accountable to his constituents. The heavy bayong are for those who will carve holes for the eyes and mouth and sell the people to the highest bidder. It is the height of naivete to think that you can fool all the people all the time. Those who abused their privileges while in power will be held to account themselves to the people. They will pay it to the last penny of the fine.

puroy

yup, at the annual ayala heights village trick or treat, the defensor village supporters (in their respective houses, i counted 2 households, must be relatives) were handing out goodies wearing what obviously were mike defensor campaign shirts– “kay mike defensor ako” or something like that. maybe that’s their version of scaring the people this halloween?

eh

OMG! This is a scary Halloween story.

Monsi Serrano

mike defensor? hahaha. that guy will never win. the people in QC don’t have any iota of respect anymore. bistek waited for so long, and i believe it’s time for him to shine. unfortunately, it looks like SB will not be supporting bistek. syempre nagamit na nya si bistek hindi sya kinalaban since he started to assume as mayor in QC.

mike defensor, back-off.

alex

bad news to QC residents. Mike Defensor is a very unreliable person. He has committed so many blunders while protecting the current malacanang occupant

Boy

I think Ara Mina should run for the QC mayorship…

Maria Anda

Too bad he squandered his intelligence in exchange for material wealth. If he runs for QC mayorship, the ghost of the past will haunt him.

Jennifer

Bistek has waited long enough in his mayoral bid. He deserves to win. QC voters vote for him

tony ako

HUWAG E BOTO SI SUSSANO AND DEFENSOR! MASYADO PLASTIK ITONG SI SUSSANO, CODDLER NG MGA SQUATTERS, PERO HIDNI SA MGA SQUATTERS NA NAG SQUAT SA LUPA NILA SA NOVALICHES!!! PWE!!! DOUBLE EDGED, ISANG HUSTISYA PARA SA IBA AND SELF INTERESTS PARA SA KANILA!!! SI DEFENSOR SIPSIP SA CORRUPT NA GOBYERNO!

noel

are you out of your mind? ara mina? what does she knows about politics and running a city. what the heck!

CHIZ

As for Defensor, well, pati Quezon Memorial, ibebebnta niya kung may magdala ng bayong sa kanya.

Bugoy-si-Boy

I think Boy is an idiot for thinking Ara Mina should run for QC mayor!

noel

let’s vote the next president who has a poitical to lead the country and not based on the popularity & surrounded with a lot of actors & actresses.
in fairness of noynoy, if he wins the country will be involved in the showbiz (Game ka na Ba, Ruffa & AI, SNN & the BUSZ). i prefered to vote GIBO… he has the political will to lead the country.

@Paulo

I beg to disagree w/ you. First, Terminal 3 was opened because the Courts said so. It was held closed because of some anomalies in the contracts. It got many problems during its opening because of some “new” corruption issues. Does “Bayong” rings a bell?

Second, PNR has already been rebuilt before Defensor was there. He was put there because he lost his senatorial bid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_National_Railways

” According to PNR general manager Jose Maria Sarasota II, the start of rehabilitation efforts on Northrail and Southrail is set to begin in September 2007.Current efforts will involve the total reconstruction of rail bridges, as well as the replacement of rail track, replacing the current 35-kilogram track with newer 50-kilogram ones. Stations are also set to be remodeled as part of the rehabilitation process. The first phase, convering the entire Metro Manila portion of Northrail and Southrail, is set for completion in 2009″

what’s wrong with you NPA?

Manuel C. Cabugao

It is good to see that the people of Quezon City are given the opportunity to select among a number of candidates for the Chief Executive. The entry of Cong. Susano and former Sec. Defensor should make the City voters more conscious on the tract records, competence, and character of the candidates instead of just relying on the popularity and name recall for the would be aspirants. It is hope that more well meaning and public service oriented residents will offer themselves to the people for a better Quezon City.

hirayatmanawari

for Paulo the concerned QC resident:

JV, if you’re writting is any indication of how ‘Gibo’ is on the intellect department, then lord almighty help us all.

drew

hey Gibo, stop using scabs to try and flood site comments and forums with endorsements for you. Hindi na gumagana yan

Dan

Its better for Mike Defensor to run again for the senate and Gloria too so they will feel the real sentiments of the Filipino and not hide behind the back of their local supporters then boast later that they still have the support of the people. For Noel can’t you take jokes? Lighten up Bro!

karlo septimo

Michael Defensor? Who, he?

Frank

I thought Inton is also running?

QC Voter

I’ve also seen some Mel Mathay posters in QC, I think he’s also running for mayor…taena….laos na to eh! If I were to choose the best among the worst, I’ll go for bistek.

WALA NA BANG IBANG TUNAY NA MATINO PARA SA QUEZON CITY, ILANNG ARAW NFA LANG ANG FILINF SANA NAMAN MAY BIGLANG MABUTING TAO NA MAKAISIP TUMAKBO SA QUEZON CITY. Andrew

We should stick to whoever Belmonte endorses.
When Belmonte took over the QC govenrment, it was in a state of deep debt and was (in the red) losing money.
Belmonte’s leadership was able to turn it around.
Just take a look at the City’s annual top taxpayers awards. He really knows where to place his focus.

@ SAM of BSB: sana naman wag mangyari. we need to educate the people now although it’s a tall order considering that there are so many “informal settlers” (pinagandang term sa iskwater) sa QC. but definitely, i will launch a campaign against Mike Defensor. we all succeeded in doing that kaya hindi sya nanalo sa senate. people seem to be tired & what? natatauhan na ng unti for the corruption that they experienced. sana nga sam matuto na din ang COMELEC sa “hello garci scandal”, “lintang bedol” etc.

i agree to the majority’s sentiment, QC let’s be wise. anybody except defensor & susano. :-)

@ JV, we’re talking of QC’s possible mayor, why bring in your gibo? you’re out of topic.

@ PAUL, i wonder where did you get your info? apparently you’re misinformed. don’t you know that during the height of may 1 chaos when GMA declared the Presidential 1017 popularly known as Calibrated preemptive response (CPR), mike defensor was suggesting to GMA to declare martial law because of the situation then? but then presidential adviser, Eduardo Antonio Nachura (now associate justice of supreme court) objected because it would be illegal? why do i know? hmmmm i won’t tell you but i have “first hand info”. the point is simple, mike is greedy — power, money, women etc… maybe to compensate his “mimiyak” or harelip. lastly, i will vote for mike defensor, provided that he marries our neighbor & family friend need i say more? visit my blog:

http://pinoy-politics.blogspot.com

@Real Deal, i like your info. very scholarly done. basta, DEFENSOR & SUSANO, NO WAY!!!

mind you, Tito Mat (mike defensor’s dad) is far humble than his son. kung anong kinababaan ng loob ni Tito Mat, syang ubod ng yabang ng anak nyang si mike. mike isn’t even a lawyer. he is an activist kuno who wanted a change. when he tasted power, he become greedy. Tito Mat is a close family friend. :-)

lastly, let’s not forget mike defensor’s misdemeanor about the alleged pick-up girls at Padi’s Point in Cubao (plural!)

Nong Marinas

Mike Defensor prides himself as an activist way back our time in UP. He was really good, although that’s an understatement.

When he sought for my help to run in congress against Dennis Roldan a.k.a. Mitchell Gumabao, our family, relatives & friends from UP supported him because in all fairness to Mike, he has a very good potential then to hold public office. Quite frankly, in never dawned on all of us who supported him that he will be one of the most arrogant, corrupt and ambitious politicians in the Philippine history.

His true color came out in the process. He felt that he has infinite power, because he has the money. Getting girls from all walks of life, students, bar girls, beautiful sales ladies, food attendants or waitresses, name them and Mike has tasted them.

We supported him not because we wanted him to return the favor,we accorded to him, but simple because we want change in leadership in QC Congress. Period. But Mike became amusingly arrogant and conceited. Some of our female friends even said, “feeling pogi daw si Mike”.

We’re all disappointed with his performance, attitude and distorted values. Truly power can make you drunk, and they say, you’ll know one’s true character when he is drunk — both literal and figurative context.

Mike is a big embarrassment to UP. Actually now, I am inclined to believe what my other friend said before which I resented but then gave it a second thought and approved of it. He said that a lot of graduates of UP have the tendency to be arrogant. They feel that they are the best school in the world like Harvard and Yale. Maybe yes. Maybe no. But the school doesn’t make a person. Only here in the Philippines that makes it so.

I have seen a lot of my previous bosses whose values and intellectual faculties are far superior from some graduates students of UP even the ones with honor. They did not graduate from prestigious schools like La Salle, Ateneo, UST, UP etc. and yet, they have strong values, superior IQ , decent business ethic and good spirituality which I admire dearly.

In the end, we will not be remembered where the school we come from but by the kind of performance we did.

Another friend said, the students of UP are taught to be corrupt. Very insulting, and yet another good point to ponder on. Where is she coming from? I guess, because most of the politicians are products of UP and again, like Mike Defensor, they take pride from being UPians. The downside is, when they got into power, they’re worst than Marcos or even a famished crocodiles. They steal, rape women and commit immorality, peddle drugs, agent of corruptions and injustice etc. This makes me realized that it seems that UP isn’t good school after all as what some of my friends say.

Well, the challenge is for us UPians to censure our fellow alumni who are in power to give justice to UP is one of the venerable academic institutions (not the best objectively speaking) in the country where statesmen and civic leaders are bred and educated.

Mike, have mercy on Quezon City. GTF out of it now.

Maverick

I agree with the majority of the comments posted here. However, are we so desperate that we settle for Bistek instead? How I wish we can also have a real alternative to those who had their chances, but failed miserably. Digressing to another related topic, I wish Mat Defensor is not re-elected as congressman of the 3rd district. He has brought so much shame to the residents of the 3rd district by always railroading the impeachment complaint against Gloria and just like his son, has continuously bombarded the district with his slogans and pictures as if the money he is spending of these are his own. Its high time Quezon City voters, especially those in the 3rd district get rid of these kinds of politicians. Lets be done with Arroyos and lets get rid with the Defensors.

Carol

Poor Bistek!

edgar vibar

I wonder what Bistek’s platform will be. He’s been the vice mayor forever. He has a degree or a post-grad on public administration. But what plans does he have for QC? I wish he’d be less shy and come out more often to engage the public with his plans.

Harly

I am not really a resident of QC but this is where I am base. As far as I have seen in my 10 years of stay, SB did quite a very decent job in governing Q.C. This being said, people of Q.C should support whoever SB endorses as this will provide continuity of growth and development of the city which he started. Remember that progress and development need follow thru efforts. Lahat naman tayo may mga kanya-kanya tayong preference on who we will support but lets support sana on our leaders on who we believe can give us better lives for the greater good.

I will vote for Ariel Inton. He is not popular but a hard worker. He may not be the one SB will endorse but it is a fact that SB depends on him as captain of a solid and strong QC Council. Inton is Majority Floor Leader for the past 9 years. He is hand-in-hand with SB during planning and strategizing that brought QC to where it is now. He is known in the grassroots, simple and very approachable. He is a lawyer. And, most importantly, he has the vision for and on how QC should move forward. He believes QC’s wealth and resources should be used, up to the last centavo, to the upgrade of individual circumstances. A beautiful and successful city can only be truly beautiful and successful if all its citizens have beautiful and successful lives, at least each has the opportunity for it to be so.

james of 2nd district

**Can we be wise ?**

We are just wondering why his name was not mentioned in your blog considering that he is one of a very strong contender of HMB. For the last nine years, hindi siya nagpayaman at and concentrated in addressing to the needs of the community.

anton yu

Councilor Ariel Inton is the next mayor of Quezon City.
Inton deserves the highest post more than anybody else.
His is a solid achievements and accomplishments. Not surveys and popularity ratings. He will be elected by voters of QC not voters of other cities.
He could be trusted to manage the P7-billion cash and bank savings of QC after the term of Belmonte expires in 2010. Why? His name is not damaged and his image is untarnished.
Belmonte and Inton along with other lieutenants of SB were the builders of QC. Nobody could claim credit for the swift passage of economic ordinances in the city council except him. The economic aordinances provided the backbone for local executives to introduce reforms and restructuring.
Inton is the dynamo and the Kobe Bryant of the city council.
He prefers to work than talk.
He is a consensus builder.
QC needs Inton.

Paulo Lopez from 264thdistrict

Now You Know ..

marlou

Atty.

On the issue of popularity of QC mayoralty aspirants.
Vice Mayor Bistek Bautista is popular because he is from showbiz. He has been in QC politics for quite a long time.
Cong. Ann Susano is popular because she is a congresswoman and because of of her wealth. But she is not an awardee of the prestigious Most Outstanding QC Councilor during her brief stay in the QC Council.
Mike Defensor is popular because he has occupied various posts in government. But like Cong. Susano he is not a recipient of the prestigious Most Outstanding QC Councilor while in the QC city council.
Councilor Ariel Inton is not that popular, admitted. But he is a recipient of the prestigious Most Outstanding QC Councilor.
Inton is not popular like Bistek, Cong. Susano and Mike because unlike the three he prefers to work silently behind TV cameras and the media.
His record is quite impressive.
Inton is credited for the swift passage of economic ordinances in the city council that propelled the phenomenal success of QC in terms of economic development. He is the trusted ally of Mayor Sonny Belmonte in the city council for nine years.
Inton delivers what is expected of him by Belmonte. In short, what Belmonte wants from the council Belmonte gets because of Inton.
There can be no P7-billion cash and bank savings owned by QC if the city council is uncooperative. It was Inton who acted like a team captain to maintain unity among the 26-member city council.
He is seeking the highest elected post in QC armed with experience and training that he earned from his closeness with SB and other city officials responsible for building QC, the richest local government unit (LGU) in the Philippines today.

Sepoy

Tsk tsk…

YNA

Atty. INTON is a lawyer. As a LAw student i think it is better to have a chief executive who is a lawyer.

YNA

dax

sino po ba ang nararapat? marapat po ba na maging basehan ang popularidad? it is not the question of who’s known or not? ang mas kailangan ay taong integridad at mas malawak na kaalaman sa pagpapatakbo ng lungsod….isang abogado na alam kung ano ang dapat mangyari para sa ikabubuti ng nakararaming nasasakupan, maraming nakalaang proyekto sa lahat na sektor…wala pong ibang taong nararapat sa ating minamahal na Lungsod Quezon kundi c Konsehal Ariel Inton…Comes 2010, Mayor Inton!!!!!!!!

neneng

devi

dito sa amin sa bgy bagong silangan, Coun Inton, extends his hands and offer some help to us nung Ondoy, katulad ng pamimigay ng relief diretso sa amin na lubos na nangangailangan, actually i don’t even know him but when i saw him, i know in my heart that he will be a very good leader and servant to the people of QC….Kudos, Mayor Inton and thank you for being with us in our time of need…God Bless!!!!!!

Bert

Tony of Commonwelt

Who is this Ariel Inton? If he is that good why not you write about him and let us decide whether to vote him or not as mayor…

Joquer

rmg

Am certain the people of Quezon City (and the whole country) hasn’t forgotten how that clown named Mike Defensor tried to amuse (did he?) us with the way he doggedly (and rabidly) defended GMA with his “boses ni presidente yan pero hindi siya yan” argument. Who was he fooling? He must have thought all the people are so dumb not to understand logic - not his distorted version. Now he is out to court for their votes and become their king. What a shame?

jerple

Dice of Commonwealth

we all know that Bistek is an Artist’s,

and an artist’s is too far for being a politics right?

what’s the chemistry for that?

an artist’s is an artist’s

he doesn’t know about politics..

i know that Bistek is our Vice Mayor but,

he still not deserving to be our Next

Mayor here in Quezon City..

I’d rather pick Councilor Ariel Inton

because i know a lot about him

he’s a well educated councilor

our Majority floor Leader in Many years..

he is a hard worker, and you can always

see him at the city hall at his office..

than to other poltician who serves for

nothing..

they serve for money and for fame..

they are not deserving for me..

so, to all of you guys..

pick the best candidates who is really

deserving to be our next Mayor..

Think for it many times..

Godbless everyone..

^_^

Gem

Jojo

Been a QC resident for 10 years now. In the past, i never cared who the mayor will be although when i looked at my rpt (real property taxes) going up almost every year, i thought about the services being delivered by the city. ok naman but it could be better. sb’s successor should be as effective as he is, if not better. bistek? parang walang balls and no mind of his own. mike? he is corrupted na. susano? don’t know her. inton? dunno him too but maybe based on the posts, baka puede siay?

rca

defensor, bistek and susano - good
daza - very good
inton - the best

mikannitek

hahahah

Inquirer

I haven’t decided on which top executive to vote for and may more likely do so only after the official Comelec list is published.

But based on my end of the public perception, and I have talked to a lot of people about this, people having been fed up with the “corruption” scandals are looking for something fresh. Someone who might not interfere with the Ombudsman’s job of investigation all the filth and will allow the courts to judge.

I take it that Gibo will not fit that bill because he is anointed by GMA.

True, Gibo is intelligent. But after several years of Marcos and GMA, people might prefer someone not as bright. To their minds, bright leaders are capable of putting their own interests above the country’s and cover up their deeds effectively, to say the least.

The only reason bright presidents’ misdeeds were found out is when they became too greedy and did not share or gave only a pittance to their supporters like in the case of Joey de Venecia. Joey wouldn’t blow the whistle if he was given the contract because he believed that GMA had already cornered most of the juicy contracts or he may be thinking, “pabalato naman ang ZTE sa akin, si daddy naman supporter mo!”

As to Gibo’s claim that we need a leader “that can hit the ground running”, the perception or interpretation is “hit the ground running straight to the bank!” meaning start looting at the starting gate.

People now realize that voting for an intelligent executive again might damage the country beyond repair. In the sixties, the Philippines was one of the most prosperous country in southeast Asia. Today, we are among the poorest. While others are on their way or striving to become powers, we are deteriorating.

What we need is a leader who will set us back on the right track and start catching up with our neighbors. Someone who will start to recover for the country some respect by putting in place incorruptible officials to oversee the different government departments and agencies. Someone who, the minds of the voters will give marching orders to “shape up or ship out”. Someone who not afraid direct the Justice Department to start investigating and if warranted prosecute those involved in lawlessness starting with the claims of human rights victims during Marcos’ years to the present, non exempted.

If the voters, I for one, perceive one such candidate, then he or she has my vote.

eton

Mike defensor was a third termer congressman in our district.. Magaling itong taong ito. Marunong bumaba sa mga tao. magtanong kayo lalo na sa old balara, , bistek is from 3rd district also of qc. matagal na yan nasa puwesto pero wala parin naitulong sa mga kadistrito nya. walang pruweba. to be fair never heard ko pa si susano, di ko alam kung magaling siya.. pero si cong. mike , ibang klase.. di naman siguro bobo ang mga botante ng 3rd district kaya sya naging 3rd termer.

wonderwoman

Guess what. I too will run against all odds as Mayor Candidate of Quezon City. I do not dream of winning, but, still I will take the bet.

I have no money, hardly can support my family, but I have a message to deliver to the voters of Quezon City.

I have been critical as a whole regarding what I have observed during Mayor Belmonte’s time. There are things that I have realized which will never prosper if I do not stand up and be counted.

I once filed a complaint affidavit against a Kagawad in my Barangay for profiting 120% from the sale of his one door apartment. I do not blame him for the profit, but when he runs away without paying the capital gain tax, that is another question. I filed my complaint affidavit against him in Quezon City office, against nonpayment of Capital gain tax, and usurpation of Authority.

After 4 and half years of seeking justice, he was finally suspended for one month and a day on an administrative offense. But unfortunately, he just ignored the suspension and keep on with his duty as Barangay Kagawad.

Another one, sometime in April 2005, after reading the Daily Inquirer’s column with a title of “Greedy Q.C. Councilors planning to hike Real Estate tax” (you can retrieve it in the internet just by typing the title), I personally delivered a letter to about 20 Q.C. Councilors and copy furnished Mayor Belmonte regarding the untimely increase, considering that even before 2005, we already were experiencing the effect of currency devaluation, wherein all prices went up.

Guess what? No one, not even one Q.C. Councilor ever wrote back or reply to my letter. Neither is Mayor Belmonte.

Sounds like dereliction of duty on their part, because they were duty bound under the law, to reply to enquiry from their constituent within 15 days upon receipt. Needless to say, my letter was snubbed.

My third encounter. I confer with Mayor Belmonte regarding the sudden and untimely increase on the Business Gross Income of 2008 and effectively to be collected starting January 2, 2009.

He said, if I can not pay my Barbershop Mayor’s permit wherein the Business Tax is incorporated, I may just closed my business. He never gave me a straight answer regarding the justification of the increase on Business Tax, considering that business is not so good for year 2008.

I made a Complaint Affidavit against Chief City Treasurer Victor Endriga of Q. C. because I discover that no city ordinance or any enabling law exist to support such increase on 2008 Business Gross Income Tax, except a mere memorandum from Mr. Endriga in his capacity as City Treasurer. This is unlawful because to justify increase on any form of local tax, a City Ordinance is needed, a mere memorandum cannot supersede the function which is strictly belongs to the City Councilors.

I filed a Complaint Affidavit to the Office of the Ombudsman for an offense of Usurpation of Authority against Victor Endriga, Chief City Treasurer of Q. C.

There are also many violations committed in the Accounting and Audit committed by the Local Government of Quezon City which runs into hundreds of millions of hard earned people’s tax. You can open the Website of Commission on Audit to know what I am talking about and to verify the truth of what I am declaring.

For these, I believe that, to change the manner how people’s taxes are spent, I have to run as Mayor Candidate. You can easily be override if you are just a mere City Councilor. It is next to impossible to fight corruption when you are from the outside. No amount of writing or shouting will move these corrupt government officials.

The only way is to participate and nothing else.

I can not divulge my real identity least my opponent may accuse me of electioneering.

I will fight even if I have nothing except determination. It is time to take control our local government from the Oligarch and syndicated politics.

Now is the time.
