The NUJP emands justice for our colleagues and all the other victims of the November 23 carnage in Maguindanao province.
The Ampatuan massacre, which the military has confirmed was perpetrated by Shariff Aguak Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. and police Senior Inspector Dicay, goes beyond the issue of freedom of the press and of expression and strikes at the very foundations of democracy.
Aside from the wife, relatives and supporters of Ismail Mangudadatu, who were on their way to file his certificate of candidacy to run as governor of Maguindanao, the slaughter also claimed the lives of at least 12 colleagues, according to reports from our chapters in Mindanao.
This incident not only erases all doubts about the Philippines being the most dangerous country for journalists in the world, outside of Iraq, it could very well place the country on the map as a candidate for a failed democracy.
Running for office and voting are as much exercises of free will and expression as covering and reporting the news.
We expect nothing less from this government than the swift apprehension and punishment of everyone involved in this gruesome assault on the national body politic, including the masterminds, regardless of who they might be.
Anything less would mean that the impunity that has emboldened those who would silence the press, staining this administration with the worst record of murdered journalists, has spread to embolden those who would subvert our democracy for their own selfish interests.
this maguindanao carnage which involve the ampatuans' are not new to us, but this is the worse. you are lucky there in Luzon since this is not happening to you, maybe it happens in some province, but the thing is this family is very close to president arroyo,I learned also two yrs ago, the governor itself chainsaw...as in... his escort and other people who are involve who traitor him. he is like god here........ anything he would say his men will follow or else they will be killed. this is not new to us....he is well known of this activities...mr. I want to join the condemnation of the massacre. It is truly heartbreaking and disturbing. And along with all Filipinos, demand justice.
Please do not divide the country further by pointing to our fellow Filipinos in Mindanao or the fact that they are Muslims. Political clans and political killings happen in Luzon (Cavite, Batangas, Bulacan etc.) in any every part on the country. It starts with small acts of corruption/stealing, then politicians/officials start thingking that they are above the law, then act like gods. As usual, a good number people have to die before give it our attention.
Next year is an election, we have been doing this for more than fifty years now. We have to remind ourselves and the candidates what Democracy means. It not about the politicians, its about the people- what we want and what is good for us. We have the power, we are the boss, they are our servants. Don't put your name on government projects because that is the the public's money, wait in line like the rest of us, wait in traffic like the rest us, skip dinners if the people are hungry,and simply - obey the law.
Sooner of later something like this would happen.
After failing to do "lifestyle checks" on the Ampatuans, even if they, for the past decade, blatantly show off their wealth with numerous mansions, range rovers, hummers, land crusiers and 27 toyota hilux pickups apparently bought in cash... and come to think of it, they don't have any known businesses to connect their wealth with whatsoever...
After failing to at least reprimand the lord of this clan for breaking this punisher mayor of Davao City's simple no-smoking policy, or prudently fine the establishment who allowed him to smoke (Ampatuan apparently smoked inside Toyota Davao when he ordered the 27 hilux pickups)...
After failing, specifically by this punisher Davao mayor, to disallow the entry of this clan's illegal firearms to freely enter his city...
After failing to implement the gun-ban policy not only in Maguindanao, but throughout Mindanao as well...
After turning several blind eyes on numerous heinous crimes committed by the lords and the scions of this evil clan...
After failing to replace military and police officials who are obviously under the payroll of this family...

The Ampatuans even when in Davao City are acting like they are still in their turf with all the heavily armed bodyguards in tow riding in marked PNP vehilces and a fleet of luxurious large SUVs. There have been reported abuses being done by them from disregarding traffic signs, wanton display of high powered guns in public and even murder committed by one of their kin in a popular nitespot. The city mayor of davao who the people outside of davao fancies as a tough executive always find an excuse why he cannot discipline these spoiled politician making trouble right under his noses. "Matapang lang daw si mayor sa TV program niya" is what some folks here think of the mayor. Instead of sending presidential adviser Dureza to make some compromise with Ampatuan, the government should immediately arrest him and ground him so he cannot cover his tracks in this gruesome killings. They should be disarmed and arrested immediately.

On the other hand it was a mistake for the Philippines to have not ratified the Rome Statute because the Ampatuan Massacre is definitely covered under the International Criminal Court.
It's a crime of humanity, no amount of justification, tradition or rules of engagement, however grand or ancient that is, would rationalize this macabre.

The drama of presenting the suspect to the media flopped since the mastermind was not handcuffed and properly restrained contrary to the pronouncement of the Secretary of Injustice. He might as well spend his 36 hours in the guest house of the Palace.
accountability in the ampatuan massacre should go to the highest levels of the philippine government...the brazenness and sheer impunity of the act must be sanctioned by the military and the police from a higher command...the political and military leadership should be held accountable by virtue of command responsibility...the evidence is there...to toto maguddatu.....justice still would not be served if and when the mastermind and his cohorts are jailed.... those responsible for the environment that could allow an act of this magnitude to be perpetrated should also be brought to the bars of justice....

Analyze correctly and think wisely!! ..... don't ignore the obvious... We need to use our brain logically, so that we may not become fool in looking the situation in Maguindanao. The evidences are valid and concrete... I could not find any concrete reason to excuse the Ampatuan's on that bloody massacre... Justice must be given to the grieving families of victims.. In connection to that, we need to critically see how the government impose the law to those who are responsible of the crime to avoid BIAS and decadence. I want to challenge the government to grow avid for the truth wherever it may be found and regardless of who said it. If the truth will not be achieve due to the process of careful investigation, then by the use of common sense I would say that they go against the sincere quest for the truth. If that will happened it simply show that our government is weak and paralyze....
