Bargain Find: Phone Extension Card (and a Spray Can too…)

In this age of Wi-Fi and broadband, the idea of dialing up via a 56Kbps modem may already seem a touch archaic, particularly to a mobile crowd. And yet there is a reason why practically all notebook PCs still house an internal modem: it’s still a highly reliable means for emergency online connectivity, especially if you find yourself in some alien hotel room in the middle of nowhere. Of course, in order to actually use your modem, you will need a standard RJ-11 wire to link your notebook to the phone jack.

The nameless RJ-11 extension cardEnter the nameless retractable RJ-11 extension wire that I stumbled upon at Federal Hardware. It has no brand to speak of, but it’s three full meters of emergency RJ-11 phone line. And of course what makes it really cool is that, like those fancy retractable Brando connectors, it can be spun back into its shell and become a really compact kit the size of a Minidisc.

The clincher: It’s just PhP 120.00.

Federal Hardware Builder’s Center is a slowly growing chain of hardware centers. As one clerk puts it, they can offer cheaper prices “because they’re not aircon’ed.

i’ve been waiting waiting waiting for an affordable contact cleaner for a long time. I have 5 aging PCs at home dying to get cleaned. i remember even emailing my friend in the states just to ask where he bought a contact cleaner here (when we were officemates he taught me how to use one to clean a PC and make it look new), only to find out it cost around P500 for a tiny bottle.

(o.c. rant)i cannot wait to fire that thing on my dust-infested motherboard . it makes any circuit board look brand spanking new.(/end o.c. rant)

You know, the place is so near my ninang’s son’s dental office but I never had a chance to pass by.

It should be easier for me now since all I need to do is hop on to the LRT-3 and get off at Anonas. Now all I need is a mask and my asthma medicine. :D

i’ve got to check this place out. thanks for the heads up :D

[s.h.a.d.o.w.] i’ve got to check this place out.

Just to level your expectations, aside from those couple of items, there really isn’t much else to see (though they do have a wide variety of tiles). After all, it’s just your usual (albeit dusty) hardware center. :)

thanks to your article, i went to federal in front of hitop along aurora blvd. got myself a small can of contact cleaner for P138….couldnt find the telephone thingy though….ill try my luck in federal along commonwealth ave.

Actually, the retractable cable with RJ-11 been around for 5 years already.

There’s a new electronics and gadget shop (can’t recall the exact name - parang Electronics Depot or something) that sells the retractable RJ-11 cords at even cheaper prices than Federal Hardware. The 3m version sells for around P69, while the 5m version sells for P99. Location of the stores: (1) G/F Park Square 1, Ayala Center (where Radio Shack used to be located, near Mobile One); and (2) Market Market (3/F or 4/F) in Fort Bonifacio.
