Up close with the N91

Not my fingers. And not my fingerprints.I got my grubby hands on a beta unit of the Nokia N91 at a press briefing that was held earlier today.

The N91’s claim to fame is its 4 gigabyte hard drive. That’s a Lifedrive in your phone, so to speak. Or perhaps a comparison with the iPod mini would be more appropriate, especially since this seems to be the direct target of the N91.

But what gives the N91 an edge over the iPod mini (aside from the fact that it’s a phone, natch) is its wireless connectivity. Not only can you share playlists via Bluetooth (or MMS, or email), but this unit will include Wi-Fi as well! As in, you can share music and files between your PC network and the N91 wirelessly! Whoa!

(This should give Steve Jobs something to sweat about. After all, shouldn’t the iPod and the AirPort be getting along in the first place?)

The N91 is scheduled to hit the market on January of next year. That’s still a long way off. And by then, perhaps the iPods would have upped their gigabytes once again as a preemptive strike. Nevertheless, the beta unit is promising: the N91 is not as heavy or as bulky as I thought it might be. And the solid metal casing is reassuring in the hands.

I’d say it’s one phone that I’m really looking forward to finally seeing in the market.

The operative word here is beta. I’m sure we can expect a tweak or two (or three), but this unit is definitely something to keep an eye out for, even though I own a 30Gb iPod, and may not even use the integrated MP3 player. Who can resist a phone with 4Gb of storage?! You can keep those eleventy thousand naughty text messages you can’t bear to delete, even if you’ve backed it all up to Nokia’s PC Suite from Hell.

I’m trying NOT to hold my breath, and it HAS happened that a model that was already publicized was junked, but… arrrgh, I’d sell my soul for this thing! But I can’t, I already sold my soul for something else…

Oh, and don’t forget, it’s NOK-ya. NOK-ya. Not Noh-KEEya. NOK-ya. :)

Yan ang gusto ko, Convergence ng cellphone, hanep sa laking memory and performance to boot. Pahiram nokia!, Kung pwede sana ay review ko ito in real situations and para may ipakita sa iba.

Oh my what an ugly #$@^o^$# …*sigh* (no more comment).

W

it has an ip address? finally! goodness think of the possibilities.

Drool! Drool! :P

That will be one expensive phone.
4 gig memory. wifi, phone.
I wonder how is the battery life.

Not all can afford that.

Edmund: Not all can afford that.

While no price has been set just yet, I suspect a 25T-30T peso price tag. Premium for WiFi and hard drive. Since it isn’t exactly a high end PHONE, it may not do well above 30T.

Note that an iPod mini is about P14T. So the N91 has to convince potential iPod mini buyers that they need a new phone too, if only to justify the price point.

Let’s just hope that the acoustics of this phone (headset incuded) could meet the expectations of the many Nokia users. As for the imaging counterpart N90, keep your fingers crossed. It sure looks good, in fact very good. How about at night and in poorly lit surroundings? I would be happy to go crazy again over high end Nokia phones after I bought my trusted 6800 and sold my 6630 for it’s poor performance at night.

Hmm, Is this published in any Nokia official site?

Kaya lang bat ganun yung ichura nya…parang slider a di mo malaman…final na kaya yan? sana kase it looks more “LIFEDRIVE-ish” heheh la lang..
