Podcasting: Channel Philippines!

UPDATE: You can subscribe to the Philippine Podcasts by following these instructions, care of Elbert from PhilMUG:

Fire up iTunes, select Advanced from the menu and Subscribe to podcast… Then enter the following URL: http://www.microwarehouse.com.ph/podcast.xml From there, you can ‘Get’ any of the available Pinoy podcasts.

Woot! I just love good news. It’s news like this that makes me proud to be Pinoy. You see, I just came from an event of monumental proportions - the launch of the Philippine Podcasting Network. Since you all read our mag, you must already know that podcasting is the newest medium of broadcasting that empowers anybody to have a voice over the airwaves.

Spearheaded by Microwarehouse, a total of 25 original local podcasts will be uploaded into the iTunes Music Store, thereby allowing anyone around the world to get a glimpse of the rich Filipino culture. We’ll give you an update as to when these podcasts will go live on iTunes, all ready for download - for free!

Some of the more interesting podcasts include Jessica Zafra’s Twisted (she’s abandoned traditional media ladies and gents so this is the only place you’ll hear her), the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism channel, Gayspeak by Danton Remoto, The Fully Booked book reviews, Red Box Greatest Karaoke Hits (hehe!), and the timeless Kahapon Lamang by local broadcasting luminary Eddie Ilarde.

We also got several friends who contribute to our magazine with their very own podcasts. You can listen in on The Fabulous! Podcast by Dominique James as well as the PhilMUG and Podcentral podcasts.

Of course, we at m|ph also have our own podcast. Since you’ll have to wait a few more days, we’ve decided to upload it onto our site. You can download our first podcast HERE. Booya!

I’ve listened to the M|ph podcast and I have to shamelessly say that it is one of the better produced podcast among the lot.

Congrats to the editors and looking forward to more podcasts from m|ph!

Its already live (via iTunes) as of yesterday. Congrats to all who contributed on the podcast effort of MW.

Aww, maaan. That was one short podcast! More, please. Like an hour’s worth! That way I can have the m|ph editors riding shotgun while I drive to and from work, and I can keep getting mistaken for an insane person, because I’m nodding, laughing, and gesticulating wildly in agreement while I’m alone in the car! :D

i went to that podcasting event you featured in your article and listened to some of the good filipino podcasts, but definitely not the best. there are better ones out there! but i’m proud to say that MPH did their stuff. That jessica zafra stuff is boring, let her stick to writing! Also im wondering why everything is episode1 and produced by Microwarehouse..? the company is alll about mac products.. so im thinking, is it really about podcasting or just ipods? i mean you can listen to podcasts even without itunes! dont they know that? ok im an ipod user, but why am i limited to downloads courtesy of microwarehouse? what about other stuffs that we want to hear? im glad MPH covered the event, but during the other hours where have all the people gone? anyways, enough said.. congrats to MPH, your tech magazine is the best! your podcast..? hmnn.. when is episode 2?

Hey! 18mb for a ten-minute podcast!!!? I thought for the space it occupied in my HD the show would be for an hour. Anyways, it was very nice. Congrats!!!

@Christine
The reason that Microwarehouse took the initiative for Filipino podcasts is that they are an authorized disti of iPod products in the Philippines. Everyone knows podcasting isn’t limited to the iPod, but it’s a simple fact that the very reason it’s called “podcasting” is that this new wave in broadcasting is inextricably tied to the simplicity of use of the iPod and its seamless integration with iTunes.

During the event, podcast downloading was limited to the MWH-produced podcasts, simply because it was a MWH-sponsored event. I think it was great of MWH to bring podcasts to the attention of more people — in particular, the folks out there who aren’t the early adopters, geeks, or audiophiles who already think of podcasts as an essential part of their daily lives. I also think that it’s terrific that the MWH-sponsored podcasts added a lot of Filipino voices to the mix, that otherwise we may not have been able to enjoy.

I’m sure that if other DAP disties would like to help Filipino podcasters get noticed along with their own products, they could also do something like MWH did. :D The event was scheduled from 3-5 for public downloading, but the press launch was held much earlier on in the day (like 11am, I think). So a lot of the podcasters were there for the press launch, but couldn’t stay til the end of the day. The m|ph editors were there til late, though. :)

BTW, did someone take home the garapon? :D

Well, first, CONGRATULATIONS to m-pH for the very successful podcast launch and for gearing into mainstream podcasting.

But I found the first podcast lame, and I hope it would not be the trend. Nothing new has been discussed and most of it is NOT applicable to the Philippine setting. I mean, how can you discuss content for the 5th Gen iPod when the fact of the matter is, we can’t even buy from iTunes. Oh and don’t worry, T3 mag’s podcast is worst. What I’m pointing at is why not focus on local tech news, there are a lot out there and it’s sounds like you guys are selling the iPod. Well I can’t blame you, the iPod is nice, but have some diversity in the group, that way you won’t sound bias against one product.

Well, I do hope you come out with regular podcasts. Have a nice day guys and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Last I looked, you were busy discretely unloading its Flat Top contents into your bag… :D

I really wanted to subscribe to your ‘cast but it’s a preeetttyy big download for dial-up people like me.. I wish you could’ve compressed the file a bit, cause I’ve already listened to 8-minute podcasts that are less than 3mb..

^^ I think this goes to all podcasts that are supported by Microwarehouse.. just to at least broaden the audience range a bit.. not all of us have dsl connections you know.

Heyyy! I beg your pardon! Do I look like a chocolate junkie? Never mind, don’t answer that. But I swear, I didn’t! Really! I’m innocent, I tell ya! Innocent! Besides, o pot-calling-the-kettle-black, my intel sources tell me you went home that day with something more damaging to your reputation than plain old Flat Tops… :D

@Gan
I agree that the first podcast might have broadened the topic of discussion by a wee margin, but I’m glad this podcast got done at all. I’m sure the editors have already bounced a few ideas around with regard to how they might improve on the first ‘cast, and feedback from readers (and now listeners!) like us will help them to fine-tune things. I believe they kept it short since they do still need to get a feel for the direction the podcast needs to go in, and it was a better idea to focus on one thing and keep it short and sweet, than ramble on about a lot of things for an hour during the first podcast. So I think the next one will be really something to look forward to. :)

Pinaligaya nyo akong 3. Ganda ng boses nyo. Original. Pwede gawing ringtone. I`m w/ u guys - all d way!!!

Thanks to the wonderful people who gave me a Sony Ericsson w800i for Christmas, I have started to find ways and means to synch podcasts to my phone. This is when I suddenly realized something missing.

Could you guys find the time to put ID3 tags on your podcasts before putting them up? It would make OC people like me so very happy! :D

I enjoyed listening to your podcast. When do we get the next one?

Congratulations to you guys for the first podcast. When is the second one be released? Oh, by the way, i always bring with me the MPH’s first podcast, it’s included in my directory of local podcasts including that of Jessica Zafra’s. Can’t wait for the next MPH’s podcast.
