Can OKS do a DIGG?

One of the latest phenomenon that swept the ‘net in the past few months is a website called digg.com. From its own f.a.q., digg is:

… a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control. With digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.”

I actually enjoy reading posts at digg.com since it gives me a heads up on things that I may have missed out on if I was simply surfing “solo”. After a couple of months in existense, digg.com attracted millions of dollars in venture capital from some big names in the industry, allowing it to upgrade its servers and. A few weeks after this an enterprising Pinoy started a copycat similar site called oks.ph. According to the oks.ph website:

oks.ph is a people-powered news and links site for everything that you find interesting online.

As of this writing, oks.ph does not have the traffic nor the clout to match the current status of digg.com but depending on how the filipino internet habitues respond to it, who knows?

im a digg user myself. in fact i wish mph blog entries were dugg more often :-)

My take on this is, pinoy don’t support pinoys. That’s about it. PERIOD. Kung merong imported (or may naunang imported), dun kaagad yung lahat. That’s the culture of pinoys. And that has to change!

We have to consider the fact that when it comes to the internet, culture isn’t necessarily a hindrance to the success of a website.

If a website provides services that proves to be better than that of an existing one, people will flock to it — not only pinoys. Bear in mind that not only pinoys have access to any particular website posted in the web.

This is what the OKS maintainers need to attain to get better over digg. BETTER — not similar — services. Not only will they get more traffic into their site, but also get credibility for putting out a site that doesn’t appear as a rip-off.

i should probably mention that it was never my plan to try to “match” digg.the idea behind oks was to have a digg-like site that was _just for Filipinos_. why? because we need an engine that highlights links that are interesting to pinoys, first and foremost, something which you just don’t get from digg.

the reason why i dont or at least refrain supporting pinoy sites is that it is just a copycat. come on. i dont like web developers/designers to be just like the OPM artists who rehash foreign musics. come up with original ideas and lets talk again.

www.friendster.com –> pinoy version www.fwendz.com

just an example.

The reason I don’t judge people’s efforts at anything right off the bat is that they may be on to something, and shooting it down with a sweeping generalization is NOT something I’d like to have done to me, should it come my turn to have an idea that *gasp* may be, ahem, “based” on an existing one.

Furthermore, I believe that any efforts to put the Filipino on the world tech map deserve some kind of support. Granted, there may be some outright cr*p out there, but it’s not limited to Pinoy copycat sites. Any crappy site will die a natural death. It’s up to us to make sure that Pinoy sites (like this one!) are supported and encouraged with active participation, sensible and constructive feedback, and just plain traffic. It may begin as a “copycat”, but with time and good user feedback, a site like oks.ph could take on a character and popularity unforeseen, yet thoroughly Pinoy.

One way that I think would add credibility and substance to our Pinoy sites is the use of proper grammar and punc-tu-a-tion. And “music” is a collective noun. There is no such word as “musics.”

Two cents, is all.

ive seen that site and its a *copy* of digg.. no doubt about it.. when digg came out it was thought to be another /. but apparently that wasnt the case.

Congratulations on oks.ph, Luis. Best of luck to you.

I don’t know what you guys are all up in arms about.

I mean, Japan started out by copying/imitating technology in the States, and no one complained about it. China copies technology and gadgets, and you’re still buying it. DVD bootlegs abound, and you’re still watching them.

For me, at least I get to see what the rest of the online Filipino community actually LIKES to read.

Now then, if only someone can finally come up with the philippine version of google using their API.

Great job guys… Thank for you work…
