LaCie in the Philippines

I came from a press launch yesterday for LaCie, the French company that specializes in storage solutions for consumers and enterprises. One of the products they launched was the LaCie USB key.

The small credit card size was not as surprising as it would have been if it was introduced two years ago but it still amuses me how such a small device can carry 8GB of data.

Does this mark a new trend in portable storage where we’ll stop carrying 512MB flash drives and go for these high capacity keys instead? Only time will tell.

LaCie is distributed by Millenium Computer Technology Corporation and their products are now available at your favorite gadget outlets.

>> I don’t think so. UNLESS… they make it in such a way that it can be worn as a company ID/badge otherwise it will be too bulky to carry and too small that it would be to easy to lose 8GB worth of confidential information (or pr0n, whichever the case may be).

Since I normally work with big files, I’ll normally only consider getting a USB key once manufacturers have found a way to squeeze in at least 40GB of data. Yes, I’ll have to wait for a few years…

for video editors, digital photographers i think the LaCie keys would go well for its portability…

but for students and office workers… well these keys go for about Php7,200 ($139) and Php5,100 ($99) for the 8GB and 4GB respectively… a bit pricey especially if you only carry with you presentations, word files, & fave songs…

so i dont think flash disks would die anytime soon… come to think of it, 1 GB flask disks go for ONLY Php1,000 nowadays and they’re getting cheaper by the month…
