Why is this man smiling?

Moks with 3.5G USB modemThis is Raymond “Moks” Remoquillo. He’s the Assistant VP and Business Head for the Corporate Business Group of PLDT.

And he’s holding a USB 3.5G modem.

Moks says that he has been testing the modem for a couple of weeks now, and he was able to get Internet speeds of 1.7Mbps while waiting at Davao’s airport. Wow.

Not unusual for people who have already been using WeRoam and who have access to a high-speed HSDPA modem. But what makes this different is that finally, we are seeing a USB-based modem. Plug this into your laptop’s USB port and away you go. And since it’s a small USB device, it’s much cheaper than current HSDPA modems out there.

The USB HSDPA modem will be released by PLDT in a couple of weeks. For all you laptop-toting racketeers out there, this should make 3.5G all the more attractive as a broadband option.

I’m not sure I get the point of this article. USB modem? D ba karamihan nang laptop ay meron nang onboard modem? What would I need it for…can someone explain?

The HSPDA USB modem isn’t new. Globe has been using that very same model for their HSPDA offer since late last year. Plus it has also been found in the wild in several pc shops on Gilmore/Aurora.

This seems like a very compact modem. However, is there any real advantages of using the modem instead of a 3.5G-enabled mobile phone as a modem for high speed interent connection?

@sime adnorof:
This isn’t an ordinary modem. This one takes in a SIM card, preferrably one that has access to a 3.5G network.

@Otto:
Unless the phone is connected to the laptop directly through cable, yes. No matter how fast the net connection is to your phone, there is the bottleneck that would come with either an IR or a bluetooth connection. :)

Globe’s been selling that since last year. I have one and I don’t have to wait for slowpokes like PLDT. Check out www.betterthan3G.com

Otto- My usb modem from Globe Visibility service reaches HSDPA/3.5G speeds when I surf and works with my sister’s Macbook, my PC and notebook

Isn’t this the Wireless WAN (WWAN) technology? My Sony Vaio SZ230P/B has a built in card for WWAN (aside from the WLAN card, built in). I have never used the WWAN because HotSpot here in LA area is virtually anywhere. I hope I can bring my laptop to the philippines to see how it will perform there.

Oh, and the only thing that’s eating me up about 3G being offered by these telco’s is we are being short-changed with the bandwidth. Elsewhere in the world, they’re getting at least 1Mb, here it’s like we have shorter dicks! Need to do a lot of compensating, but then again, don’t leave without them!

Next Question: How much?

This is the same as those PLDT WeRoam cards right? The only difference is the connection which is USB versus the the older PCMCIA slot.. :)

Laptops do have modem already. I think it is much more WI-Fi USB that captures signals. huh. no matter how fast it is , it cannot be appreciate if you computer specs doesn’t meet the specs. Check >> Business Process Outsourcing . Good as the 3.5G.

USB? Laptops already has modem. I think your taking about USB wi-fi.
