Nokia 5310: Draft pick update

Local launch of the latest phone models from Nokia

In a previous post, we introduced the latest Nokia handsets that were in an event in Singapore. Well, these same handsets were unveiled to the local media last Friday. While most of the items discussed in the big event held last August remained the same, there were some relevant things that were announced for our local consumers.

An mp3 player with phone functionalityProbably the most consumer-related issue is the bundled microSD card. In other countries such as Hong Kong, it’s only a measly 512 MB, but Nokia execs were glad to inform us that the local sales package of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic will come with a 1 GB  (the phone supports up to 4 GB). William Hamilton-Whyte, General Manager of Nokia Philippines, even went a far as saying that they would want people to consider the 5310 as an mp3 player with phone functionality, and not the other way around.

Performance-wise, I find that it does perform pretty well as an mp3 player with great audio quality especially when compared with other music-centric phones, but come on now; the 5310 will never be an iPod. However, come to think of it, the iPod will never be a 5310 either. Oh, wait, I forgot about the iPhone, but then, that costs an arm and a leg and Nokia is, well, simply affordable. So what do you think, does the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic have what it takes to be your next mp3 player?

Hopefully, we can get our grubby hands before the year ends for a more comprehensive review on this ultra sexy mp3 player disquised as a phone beauty.

I think the 5310 will have the edge over the ipod, why?, because the sound quality of mp3 players depends on the kind of headset you use. I just bought the Nokia 5700 xpressmusic, I was not contented with the earbuds included in the package, so I used my favorite headset on the 5700. When comparing with the sound of my old ipod, I am happy that it is in equal footing, if not better than the ipod. Any way, I never used the headset included in the ipod package, because it sounds inferior, that I also used my favorite headset on it.
When going out, I never worry, because I always have good music sound and a phone as well.

The only downside to the 5310 or any Nokia music-centric phone for that matter is storage. This matter can be address by memory card usage, but it can never really match the iPod classic’s capacity.

However, the bigger question is, how much space do you really need. I, for one, need all the space I can get as I also use my iPod as back-up storage for important documents as well.

For those who don’t really mind smaller storage capacities, I believe Nokia’s handset models might have the edge due to its versatility and form factor; but if your a huge music junkie and you need all that 100 GB storage, then the iPod is definitely the way to go.

This statement really made me angry: General Manager of Nokia Philippines even went as far as saying that they would want people to consider the 5310 as an mp3 player with phone functionality…
Why didn’t NOKIA manage it to stop the music player bug which makes the phone hung while using music player, after 1 minute, after 2 minutes or whenever it wants. The main function which made me buy this phone, the music player, is simply unusable. Thank you Nokia, and thanks, that you still don’t have a firmware update which can cure the problem. U really like to spend money on not readily developed products. Buy better the W880i from Sony-Ericsson, it can play music…

I understand your frustration Mike, but instead of simply venting out your anger, have you tried having it serviced at a Nokia Care Center? As it is a new release, it’s still covered by warranty which gives you at least 12-months of free service.
Unless, of course, it was bought from a store that’s not authorized by Nokia which then voids any warranty or guarantee that it’s fault free. :)

Your problem with the music player, as far as my experience goes, maybe an isolated case as I have tried the unit itself and found no such problems with the one I used. Try having it checked out to see what can be done with your unit.

the problem with this unit is that the included headset will not give you the promised music of the Nokia 5310 unit, you have to use or maybe purchase another headset(JBL) as suggested by Nokia to experience it. Why can’t nokia have its own good head set?

It’s been proven that most bundled earphones don’t give justice to the music players that comes with it.

Just take a look at the iPod.

So I’m not exactly surprised that the included earphones of the Nokia 5310 isn’t that great either. But I agree with you, they should improve on this aspect to gain better appreciation from their customers (both new and loyal ones).

I too have same problem w/ my 5310 fon juz lyk edgar’s. While playing the music player or even the radio, it will suddenly hang up and restarts by itself. Also the picture quality of the fon. There appears a number of small colored dots when taking pictures on a dim place. I compared it with the 6300, it has no small colored dots on its screen when using its cam on a dim background. I bought it in a very reliable store.

Since you bought it from a reliable store, I suppose it comes with a Nokia warranty. Bring it to one of their service centers to have it checked out for defects.

I’ve been able to use the 6300 and 5310 side-by-side, and the only thing I’ve noticed is that the screen of the 6300 is better than the 5310. Otherwise, they’re almost the same (except of course for the music features). The performance of the camera on both phones are the same.

Try having it checked for problems. There’s no harmin trying since its still covered by the warranty.
