Smart Bro Prepaid: Broadband for Everyone

While watching one of the noontime shows on TV last weekend, I couldn’t help but notice the huge segment devoted to Smart Bro’s new prepaid service. This got me curious so I researched on it a bit more and found out that there was something indeed new and noteworthy about it.

Broadband internet for everyone

For starters, it’s the first and only portable prepaid broadband service that I know of that’s available in the market. It’s not as fast as the average DSL service, but at least you can get bring it with you anywhere and you don’t have to go through the stringent process of applying for one as such is the case in most post-paid services. Smart had previously made available a portable solution to their broadband service via a USB modem, but this time around, this new service makes use of a prepaid SIM that can easily be loaded just like a regular SIM only this time around, it’s dedicated for data transmissions only. It also makes use of the existing 3G network which is the first real-world application I’ve seen so far that really highlights the value of the high-bandwidth network for everyone. The rates are similar to data calls made which is P 10 per 30 minute block.

The availability of this new prepaid service is indeed helpful in making the internet accessible to more people. Of course, this is only as good as the 3G signal in your area, but neverthless, kudos to Smart for this simple yet effective innovation.

It does sound like the ideal internet solution for casual internet users. But the real concern is the quality of service, I’ve heard that the Plug’n'Play Smart Bro service has terrible signal in some areas.

Yeah, we’ve heard of similar nightmares concerning the other portable Smart Bro solution, but given that this is running on the 3G signal which is probably more accessible in a greater majority of areas (in the metro), this should perform better.

This is definitely an intriguing product, but how would the bandwidth be compared to an internet connection through a 3G phone? I’ve been using my k610i to connect online for a while now, and I’ve had pretty impressive bandwidth readings - went up to as high as 380 in Davao City. (In Metro Manila, I’ve been able to connect at an average of 200 , but there have been multipe “dead spots” where I couldn’t even get a connection decent enough to check my email.) Would the prepaid broadband service give a substantially improved connection?

@dodot

This is what we’ll have to wait and see as the months go by when more users voice out their concerns/feedback on it.

please don’t get this one… as its main features are nightmares and headaches…

-always getting a web page “insufficient balance” even if you still have (like Php150) its so annoying

- always disconnected you have to reconnect every now and then even if you have a strong 3G signal

- I realize(how stupid of me) i could use my cellphone as a modem and connect to the internet you odnt have to buy their almost 5K worth of crap gadget.

- they have a superb moronic and unaccommodating group of call center guys ready to give you a nonsense crap of help support
- Don’t wait for another so called “first innovation” of smart bro they never perfected their IT infrastractures or their tech support help.

- twice now I’ve been a victim of this smart bro crap and now never will i get any wireless service

Those are indeed legitimate issues Smart has to address, but one of the more interesting points that was raised is the use of 3G enabled phones.

If you’re already using one that’s 3G capable, you don’t really need to buy Smart Bro’s modem since you can use your phone as one. This will save you money, plus the fact that you don’t have to carry two devices that more or less does the same thing.

you should definitely not buy not damn thing is not worth the price, its just the same as your 3g capable phone with built-in modem.(ex. n-series) if you have such a phone you may avail of that service. for the same rate without spending your bucks for a non sense gadget.

ooooops!!!!!!!!! i dont think its the same!!!!!!!!!!!! it depends on the user dont just focus on the speed the same blah blah blah.. well for example im a hardcore gamer and a DOTA lover can i play that game in a 3G capable phone????????? and notice this although both can use 3G connection its still not the same speed while opening a web page especially pages that have lots of pictures like friendster ….PC with smart bro will open fast rather than your 3G phones.why well dont forget the BANDWIDTH mate although both uses the same internet speed the cache of your 3G phone is far more much lesser than those of a PC…and i just tested it even DIAL UP opens friendster web page much faster than my 3G phones (using 3G not GPRS)well hows that hehehe!!!!!!!!BANDWIDTH :>

You’re right, using your mobile phone to browse the internet via 3G is indeed slow, but what we’re talking about here is the capability to use the mobile phone as a modem to connect to the internet through 3G using your PC. You won’t have to buy the 3G modem which basically does the same thing as your 3G phone/modem.

The modem used for the service can connect to HSDPA or 3.5G which can give speed of more than 400 kbps. My personal best when connected to Smart’s network is 1.2 Mbps. At P4,500, an HSDPA device is still the lowest in the country. The cheapest HSDPA phone now is still in the range of P16,000. Plus you get worried every now and then about being disconnected if there’s on incoming SMS or call.

Thanks for the comments…. I’m really planning to get this one… But before buying one, i need to read more comments both constructive and destructive. I worried becuz since its thru a mobile phone there would still be a great difference between using a real PC and a mobile phone. Issues like web caching, signal traffic, QoS(strong connection, no DCs), security, uncontrolled interferences, like bad weather, signal coverage, etc. etc. The most important thing is, can it handle video/audio streaming or large file torrent downloads? I mean “384 kbps” is more than enough for it… but is it reliable? Thnx in advance.

You won’t access the internet on you’re phone, but rather on your PC. You use you’re phone or the Smart Bro Prepaid modem to connect to the internet, but all the web surfing is done on the regular PC .

Now, regarding reliability, some say it’s bad, but others say it’s good. I guess, for now, it depends on your area.

one good indicator is to find someone with a 3G phone (better if HSDPA) with a Smart sim and see if the areas where you plan to use Smart Bro have strong 3G signals. All major cities have pretty decent 3G coverage.

Well Smart Bro Prepaid disconnects a lot with a GPRS signal so it’s safe to say it’s bad and 40kbps tops. *sigh*

Didn’t know our place is so far behind to not have a 3G signal. Lol. So i travelled to Baguio in search of 3G and i have to say it has pretty decent bandwith over there i think it went up to 500kbps but also often disconnects.

I use Wifi

what can we do to subscribe in smart bro if the area of our house is a deadsport or theres no signal because of the trees arround us we subscribe in smartbro but when the technicians came bye to our house they said theres no signal so we are now claiming refund that can be get after 9 working days, we are hoping we can get some solutions of our problem before we get the refund… pls reply to my email ad.. thanks, we are located at skyline 3 cat. grande davao city philippines

I believe the cheapest HSDPA phone is not P16K or higher. Nokia 6120 Classic has HSDPA and I believe it is about 9K more or less.

i have a few question. my wife is using a smartbro, right now but im the one who apply b-4 i go abroad, now my question is my wife will transfer to quezon province, how can we transfer smart bro. my contract started last oct. 2007, please help us waht to do.. looking forward for your reply as soon as possible thank you very much

@richard

try getting in touch with Smart Telecommunications. They have certain requirements for Smart Bro to work in a particular area so we can’t assume that the service is available in the area where she is transferring to, especially since its in the province.

I am still undecided if illgetthissmart bro pre paid. For those who are not satisfied with the smart bro pre paid probably you can sell the gadget to me to try it out instead to buy the new set. Pls call or txt me at 0906 2211990 . thanks - Janice Medina

I was planning to have that smartBroPrepaid but I was disappointed while reading your comments.. I think I will apply at globe broadband 590.. :> lol

since i saw the ad on tv, i became very curious coz i really want to have my internet at home.

But when i saw your 4 steps to have it, i was disappointed to the price of the smart kit. its too expensive. is there any other way to have that prepaid broadband? pls answer back… thanks!

regarding the smart bro prepaid,(i’m using it now..) why is it that i’m just receiving 16 0r less than 0.4 kbps??!!
hmf!

Prepaid Broadband Internet is already in the country for more than three (3) years na po in IRIGA CITY, CAMARINES SUR. Its first application is in UNIVERSITY OF SAINT ANTHONY (USANT) where students are given a limited internet card (scratch card) that can be used in COMPUTER LABORATORY, INTERNET LABORATORY, IRIGATEL INTERNET CAFEs and Dialup. The schools internet service provider is IRIGA TELEPHONE (IRIGATEL) COMPANY, the owner of IRIGATEL and USANT are the same in the person of SANTIAGO D. ORTEGA, Jr., the MIS head of USANT and the Network Administrator of IRIGATEL are the same in the person of PABLITO P. ZAMUDIO, the system is called by Mr. ZAMUDIO as BIAS or Broadband Internet Access System, on May 8, 2008 IRIGATEL launched the country’s first ever PREPAID DSL for only PhP7.50/30min. Now internet card of students from USANT can access the internet at their home using DSL connection, INTERNET LABORATORY, COMPUTER LABORATORY, IRIGATEL INTERNET CAFÉ, and DIALUP.

What a mess… My Goodness why smart is making this foolish innovation, I’d wasted money for this stuff its not even worthy for the unreliable price. Buy this and you get lost.

I’m connected with smartbro and honestly, Im very happy with their service. Im working as a home-based telemarketer and I dont have any problems with the speed and the connection of my VOIP. Thanks Smartbro!!!!

im using my p990i as modem and getting 460kbps, still i can receive sms messages, here in bulacan. i heard about this prepaid broadband kit and notice that it is also based onth 3g principle, so why will i get this roduct if it is the same as my 3g enable phone modem. it just like you buy a 3g enable phone without the calling and txting otion.

Just make sure you have 3G signal on your area before buying the modem(4500) if not just use your CP as modem.

With regards to IRIGATEL their service is f****d up when they started offering promo for DSL and phone line for only 750 pesos, my bandwidth DROPPED less than half of my subscribed speed.

DSL speed 51kbps… you call it DSL????

pano ggamitin ung cp as modem.?

@ bruce

refer to your cp’s user manual

I think the smartbro prepaid service is being marketed to people unaware that using your 3g phone will do the same, and some.

I have known this IT fellow since I started working, and he is impressed with the device, but when i showed him that he could attain the same speeds using his own cell phone as a modem for his pc, he was shellshocked.

For almost two(2) years, we had to endure hell with SmartBro Wireless. It seems the word “quality” is not in the vocabulary of Smart.Take-in lang sila ng take-in ng subscribers and seeming disregarding their network’s capacity to handle the traffic. Finally last month, we have finally said enough is enough. We have switched to Globe instead. So far, so good. Quality is superior. Hey, Smart, perhaps a change in corporate name into “Not-so-Smart Inc.”, coz that’s how you seem to be acting…c’mon guys, I’m sure you can do better…

Actually i’m planning to buy this new device but after reading your comments I think i’ll stick with 3g phones instead…thanks guys..

hay salamat…bblina sana aq..buti nlng natauhan aq… 3g nlng…

anyone here from batangas city that uses smart bro prepaid..any feedback?
still thinkin to try that smart bnro prepaid. thnx

pls help when i try to connect my wireless smartbro prepaid the messge appears connection was terminated because the remote computer did not respond in a timely manner… pls what should i do?

Hi,

I am writing to this forum, to inform you of the possible HEAD ACHE that you may encounter if you avail SMART BRO PRE PAID.

You will not encounter problem connecting to SMART NETWORK, but as you use your internet, you will notice that you cannot connect to any site that you want to visit.

Now, as you look into your connection, you will see that your PC is connected to SMART Network No. 57 or 58, etc. etc…. BUT Smart Network to Internet is NOT CONNECTED……

And the worst thing is your time is running…… MEANING YOUR LOAD IS BEING CONSUME EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET…..

MAIINIS LANG KAYO……

SO THINK TWICE IN GETTING THE SERVICES OF SMART BRO PREPAID….

regards,

Rey Atienza

Hello smartbro, this is the nth time I would raise this issue.
You are blocking 95 % of the websites!! We can not effectively use your service.

Please give us credit. You can’t just take money off people and provide lousy service. That is not good business practice.

I have emailed you August 13, text Smart Support many times too at # 0918 500 3000.
I have also visited your office in Robinsons Galleria last week but the your service worsened and nobody bothered to call us to tell us how to fix it.

What’s going on? If you can not provide service then stop advertising it. You are cheating the people.

P10 per 30minute block????? it should be per minute charge. its not really P10 per 30minute. you start connect at 9:25am then stop at 10:45am (20 minutes) and you will pay P20. is that P10 per 30minutes? hello!!!

can i use a router or sharing machine with my 3G phone? please give me some advice how to do it…tnx

@cris

I don’t think you can connect it to a router. What you can do is use an app such as JoikuSpot to share the 3G connection of your phone through WiFI. That is if your phone and the computer you want to share the connection with has WiFi capabilities.

SMART 3G service is EXCELLENT! compare to GLOBE. Actually This SMART Bro PREPAID KIT is JUST LIKE YOUR REGULAR 3G/HSDPA. but its only focus on the network itself!

TRY THIS!
instead of “SMARTBRO” as the APN of the modem change it to “INTERNET” this would make it faster, coz fewer people use this.

example:
my friend, his friend and his friends friends use that SMARTBRO APN they are sharing the connection speeds on a cellular tower but me using the INTERNET apn which is use for mobile fones but configurated to my smartbro i will have more speeds that others gets niyo?

madami na kasi gumagamit ng SMARTBRO!!!! kaya mabagal na din! smart bro and smart internet has different sectors in their companies eh konti lng naman ang gumagamit dito ng internet sa phone nila diba!

LOWEST PRICE OF A 3G HSDPA FONE IS 9000 6120classic! the BEST UN AS A MODEM! AND AS A FONE! 3.5G always! hahahaha

don’t buy this! mas madalas n hindi magamit kse walang signal and if ever n may signal, ang bilis maubos ng load. If you’ll add up the expenses of loading, mas better to subscribe nlang.

Hey guys and gulls (joke). Does the speed of internet connection has something to do with the phone model if a cp is used as modem for browsing? I’m presently using a nokia 6230. Would a 3G phone give better help?

For those who have said something about having a 400 kbps speed, don’t believe that. Have your speed checked at speedtest.net or broadband-expert.co.uk for a more precise speed reading.

Having said that, the speed I usually get hovers around less than 1/3 that of Smart’s published 384 KBps speeds, in other words I get something a little over 100 Kbps usually. Either of those speeds are frankly quite slow for today’s standards (I read that the US FCC already defines broadband internet as something greater than 768 Kbps and most providers already offer 1 Mbps as one of their lowest). You’re better off using this service if you are surfing more text-intensive rather than graphics-intensive sites.

Last Sunday though, I experienced 3.5G speeds (using speedtest.net, it read between 600 Kbps - 1.2 Mbps).

If that higher performance speed holds, then P10 for 30 mins is good value for your money and is pretty cheap. Most countries charge or have plans on a per kb basis which isn’t cost-effective since more sites are becoming graphics-based and youtube is being visited more of the time.

Is 3.5G the equivalent of HSDPA? Theoretically, what is the maximum speed a purely 3G system can offer? I hear Globe offers something a bit faster than SmartBro.

Theoretically, yes since the 6230 isn’t a 3G phone and a 3G connection is much faster than EDGE/GPRS.

The Philippines is now 10 years behind the technology of USA (FYI), SmartBRO is not that very high tech today, it is considered antique, SmartBRO has the slowest connection, I can even take a nap while waiting for Google page to load.

Recently a Globe Visibility kit, testes internet speed using speedtest.net, showing 1.2Mbps speed. haven’t tried smart though but using my phone as modem speed reaches up to 300kbps only.

SmartBro is evil. Gusto lang nila kunin ang pera mo. I asked my mother to subscribe in SmartBro pero nilagay niya na name sa akin, then siya yong representative ko, ok lang daw yon sabi ng SmartBro. Tinggap nila yong cash kahit walang authorization letter from me, pero di na tuloy yong installation dahil marami pa silang alibi.

how can i connect to smartbroadband in my Linpus OS Acer Aspire one,
PLS let me now,pls

no. don’t get this device. u will save yourself a lot of headaches, believe me. im a vexed owner of one. it has a mind of its own, disconnecting from the internet on its own volition. it’s expensive, prone to system errors like asking you to reload even when you still have a P400 balance, and reaaaaaaaaaaaaly slow when used in remote areas (only good when you’re in the city proper.

don’t buy it!

I bought one last December and it is absolutely terrible. I can’t believe I fell into the bullshite idea of this nonsense rubbish advert. It’s absolutely money-grabbing with an extremely low quality service. If you’re using dial-up, you might not want to switch to this undoubtedly ineffective service. Dial-up is even faster than this one.

I’m currently using Smart Bro prepaid in an area that is not 3G service (in the mountains of South Cotabato) and the only thing I can say now that it is performing better than what I expected.
If I were asked which one I would prefer between Smart Bro and Globe Visibility, I would still select Smart Bro, since it’s faster in Metro Manila than Globe Visibility and its signal reaches our place here in South Cotabato.

I only use it to check emails, its really terrible you can’t have a consistent speed upon connection. Good for me i use accelerators to add some more speed. Why can’t they make it unlimited then, either we pay for what we use or we pay what we didn’t its the same bullish service right? I am waiting for sun cellular to make a start hehehe, unlimited with only a load of 25, its not impossible it may even be free 11 pm to 7am :)

sabi nyo nationwide ang signal ng smartbro..? ba’t hindi ako maka connect..buwisit naman..na biktima niyo ako….

boycott smart bro prepaid, ang bagal-bagal!!!

Hi guys! I’ve been using smart bro for like almost a year now because it’s portable and ideal to use since I get to travel in different places here in the Philippines. I don’t understand why some people are complaining about their Smart Broken internet connection. For those who are complaining, this would probably help you…To have a fast connection, you should have at least Windows 2000, XP, Vista or Mac operating system. Your CPU at least 500MHz or higher and Ram must be 128MB or higher. Wink ;)

yeah.. yeah.. I my self is a smartbro subscriber, so far I’m very much satisfied with the service that I’m enjoying. I’ve been able to take care of my budget as well as the time that I have to consume. I think we should not blame all the fuzz to smart bro, we should also consider the units that we are utilizing. We should also try to check on our units. It is evident that technology grows everyday.

What? Hindi naman po mabagal ang Smart Bro dito sa Makati. Some of my friends tested Smart Bro’s speed; u might want to watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AWnWUXoIYs

for a typical student like me,this smart bro prepaid is a real deal. First, it’s cheap and second, it’s portable. As a student, I get to save more money because I do budget my time of using this prepaid internet. I spend like 40 php a day, not bad. Also, portability made me avail this. I need internet connection wherever I go cause I do my thesis. So, it really helps me to have portable internet connection.

I used this smart bro prepaid nung nasa batangas ako for mountain climbing with my friends. kala ko nga wala na ko makukuhang signal kasi bundok na ung area, pero meron pa din pala. same din nung nagpunta kami sa baguio, ok pa din ang signal.
