SingTel-Globe bring iPhone to Philippines

I’ve been holding out on posting this bit of info until the end of this week primarily because I’m hoping that something more substantial and specific will come out, but it seems that we’ll have to wait a little longer to get the juicy details on this latest development.

As many of you iPhone fanboys in the Philippines probably know by now (and if not, read on), Globe has been named one of the first to make available Apple’s controversial mobile device in our country. This happened as a result of SingTel’s success in inking a deal with Apple to distribute the iPhone in Asia through their network in Singapore and partly-owned subsidiaries in India (Bharti group),the Philippines (Globe); and Australia (Optus). I already hinted on the possibility of Globe carrying the iPhone before, but the circumstances before and now are completely different.

Will they be the only one? When will this happen? Which iPhone model will they release? There are so many questions, but no definite answers at the moment. The suspense just keeps on growing.

iphone is only good with the design but a big problem on the sound and volume. i own an iphone 16gig here in saudi but its not worth. iphone here selling at 2100 saudi riyals or 21,000 pesos

The problem with iPhone is the user can’t change the battery, you have to bring the unit to an Apple store for them to replace the battery. SIM Card is also not replaceable. It is not like Nokia wherein you can change the batteries and SIM Cards easily.

great phone ……ahead in technology….suprise with joseph comment ….better learn how to use it properly to enjoy the features of iphone…i love using it

I’ve always believed that the iPhone isn’t meant for everyone. It has certain functions and features that best suit a certain demograph and that definitely isn’t the text-fanatic public. So I guess the iPhone, for its value, will definitely turn off a certain percentage of the market, but will nonetheless, make others happy.

The touch screen is the only thing I like on this phone. The sad thing is that it’s not a good phone but it’s a good ipod and there’s an ipod touch available. I still find apple products to be overpriced. I guess that’s what people are willing to pay for the design.

I own an iphone and Im using it in the Philippines and for me it’s not worth it. I jumped into the wagon immediately when the iphone was released in the US. I suggest we wait for another generation of iphone to come since it needs a lot of improvement.

The iphone is a proprietary piece of hardware. Apple is very keen on that. On the other hand - the phone is beautiful. It’s just going to be a matter of personal taste.

other than the features of iPhone.lets consider iPhones already in the philippines.some from other countries like the U.S. and some smuggled..will globe adopt this so that iPhone can perfrom well. iPhone do well if it is online..and i hope globe will make iPhone internet cheaper.

Data connection provided networks are not phone-based, meaning all phones can work with any network if configured properly. Globe, per se, cannot block the iPhone from using its data communication features on its network.

Plus, Globe has recently introduced a time-based billing system for internet usage which is somewhat similar to what Smart has except. However, you have to activate this scheme first on your phone to use it, otherwise you will still be charged according to byte-usage/download.

Iphone is a very good phone. It is not for everyone, it is for people who are surfers and have passion to technology. I don’t want an Iphone before because of no capability to interact with exchange server, but with the move of Apple to buy a license of Exchange Server from Microsoft, it will kill the Blackberry and other Windows Based phones.

Hi! I would like to ask if anyone knows how to configure iPhone with Globe’s internet services (such as surfing, email, etc.). The iPhone was already unlocked when I bought it from a retail store but I can’t seem to make use of the internet browsing feature using Safari. I’ve already configured EDGE’s AVN setting for Globe (internet.globe.com.ph)and leaving username and password blank. Any help?
My iPhone’s firmware version is 1.1.2

Hi! I’m planning to buy an iphone but i’m hearing a lot of negative reactions for iphone. i’m having second thoughts now of whether to buy an iphone or just an ipod touch. in apple’s site the 16G iphone sells for $499. same price as an ipod tod touch with 32G. today i went to sm bacoor and i canvassed for a 32g ipod touch and it sells for P25,000. so the 16G iphone might have the same price as the 32G ipod touch.

@Eroz

It really depends on what you need. If you need a phone that you’ll use for texting and calling for the most part, you’re better off with the typical mobile phone.

However, if you need a portable internet device with support for a variety of applications, then the iPhone might just be the one for you, but if memory/storage capacity is an issue for you, then get the iPod Touch or you can wait for the new iPhone to be released pretty soon.

i have an iphone 16gb here in the philippines. i have no problems using it i dont care if the next genereation iphone or what so called iphone 3g is. the only difference in my opinion is the internet usage of 3g. but idont usally use this function naman ehh. my only concern is “WHERE CAN I REPLACE MY BATTERY IF ITS LIFE IS OVER” i dont have a waranty coz hindi ko nmn gnagamit ung atnt. paano yun?

The iphones sold outide of US are not smuggled our, they are knockoffs that don’t work like real one.

No kidding you shouldn’t buy iphone when it first cam out. Only “sheep” would stand in a line and fork over that kind of money for a cell phone. Even worse they complain later. Aren’t they embaressed?

In the Philippines, Globe will bring in the iPhone version 2.0 (3G) as Singtel will bring in this same version to Singapore. The Philippines and Singapore are not part of the 20 odd number of countries that have confirmed that the 2nd version iPhone will be available on Jully 11th this year such as the US and Australia.

Will the $199 trend make its way here with the Globe package?

I hope the cost of using the handset won’t burn pockets, the way the buzz is going on over the net.

will it feature GPS service in the phils?
