iPhone 2.0.2 Update: Double-bladed Sword

This bit of news might not concern a lot of folks in Manila as the 3G iPhone’s debut is still tomorrow, but for those who have manage to get one already, this is a note worthy read.

As you may know, iPhone 2.0.2 firmware update has been released and while it does work for others; it seems that it apparently does quite the opposite for some. More specifically, the latest update actually kills the iPhone’s ability to make phone calls in a 3G network. Ironic isn’t it considering that the whole point of owning a 3G iPhone is to be able to use it in a 3G network, right? Well, reports are coming in that some users are experiencing this dilemma after they have updated their beloved iPhone. One particular frustrated owner eventually brought his iPhone to an AT&T store to have it checked; and when the SIM was swapped out, the problem was fixed.

Gizmodo has a simpler solution: switch your iPhone to use a 2G network only. Yeah, it doesn’t exactly fix the problem and is actually just a work around, but it’ll do in emergency situations.

For now, this issue isn’t widespread yet, but as more reports slowly trickle in, I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of people that are affected by the update slowly swells to a greater figure. So I guess it’s best to hold off on updating your iPhone’s firmware at the moment until a more stable, and reliable one becomes available.

I updated with 2.02.

Speed of contact search hugely improved and iPhone hasn’t crashed or an appication quit once over the last 24 hours since update!!
I also unclicked all my playlists and music and most of my apps before applying update so that backup was shorter and then Rebooted after reintalling apps and playlists.

That’s good to hear. At least you’re not part of the ‘minority’ who are experiencing problems as a result of this new firmware.

I have noticed the speed increases while typing SMS messages however like many others this just made my 3G connection more unstable than it already was (hard to believe). I have noticed that either rebooting the device or switching 3G off than on, after waiting for an EDGE connection, it will kick back into high gear for a while.

I’m in New Zealand. I bought my 3G iPhone last friday, connected it to iTuned, and said there was a 2.0.1 update.
So making sure it worked out of th ebox first, I synched with OUtlooka dn my music collection. 40 minutes just to do my calendar and contacts, but music synched quickly enough.
Synch after that were quick, only about 30 sec or so. So I download the 2.0.1 update (200 MB - eeek) then another half hour to sync my calendar again.

So this friday, 2.0.2 is available. Download and update - 200 MB again, followed by 2 apps that wont work. iPassword dissapeared, and soltare won’t update, and my calendar is still synching as I type this 20 minutes after the synch started.
I’m glad I don’t have to make any call at the moment!

currently updating!! I have been connected to itunes for the 2.02 firmware update for the last 13 hours and it has just reached over half way through ‘backing up’ my iphone 3G, this is my 4th attempt to update via itunes, and I think it is absolutely ridiculous, for a mere 200Mb update to take this long and I estimate at the current rate of speed it is going to take at least another 10 hours to complete, so in total approx 23 hours!!!! absolutely scandalous!!! Apple wake up and listen!!!

Updated from 2.0 to 2.0.2 in about an hour over cable access. connection started out poor but for some reason seems to have got better. One sure improvement is that the iphone’s data transfers no longer effects our work monitors.

Mo. I don’t know why on earth something would take 23 hours to update. That is silly, and maybe you should evaluate your current setup as well.

The update takes a while, but are people forgetting that this phone does a lot more than just dial numbers? I think it is absurd the amount of criticism it gets. The stuff people complain about, (less 3G issues) other phone don’t even do.

I mean, It’s fresh off the shelves, I promise every development team needs to make improvements once something goes live. Live with the updates, enjoy the improvements, and enjoy the phone you have. Or… go ahead and just buy a Windows Mobile Phone. I work with those daily, I promise there is a stark difference.

Stop complaining so much.
