iPhone 2.1 Firmware Update now Available

iPhone firmware 2.1 update now available
Those who already own an iPhone, whether it’s the 3G version or the 1st gen, can now update to firmware 2.1 through iTunes 8. Although you’ll lose whatever jailbreak privileges you may have by updating, you can, however, expect the following improvements in your iPhone:

  • Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
  • Significantly better battery life for most users
  • Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
  • Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
  • Faster installation of 3rd party applications
  • Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
  • Improved performance in text messaging
  • Faster loading and searching of contacts
  • Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
  • Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
  • Genius playlist creation

So if you’v got iTunes 8 installed already, hit the update button now becuase it’ll take some time to download as the size of the update is a bit on the hefty side. So far, the only downside to it is that it’s currently still jailbreak-proof, but maybe whatever flaws it has just hasn’t been reported yet.

How about you guys? Have you updated already? How’s firmware 2.1 working for you so far?

The size of v2.0 v2.0.1 v2.0.2 and v2.1 are all about the same. The full size of the OS.

just got it. it’s pretty sweet 3G finally works to full potential, battery life AWESOMENESS!!!, texting is supposedly faster, never really had a problem with that, i hope they will soon update the GPS part though, my friend has the Sprint Instinct and the GPS is alot better on that vs Iphone. never had problems with dropped calls either, the only thing that sucked was the 3G, but it kick ass now.

This is so weird but when I hold the sleep and home button for three seconds and let go a white flash goes over the screen and an image of the current screen on my iPhone is in my photo album

?? 2.1 is jailbroken.

Still works with the WiAd system.

Updated this morning and have rebooted my phone several times but I still don’t have a Genius option in my iPod playlists nor do I see the option to set up the multiple text alert thing.

@Niki

You need to enable Genius in iTunes first before you can find it active in your iPhone

I love 2.1 its so much faster than the old one for things like contacts and SMS. Definitely noticeable. For those with the old iPhone you would have noticed a slowdown going to 2.0, well expect a speedup to 2.1

Yeah. You’ve discovered the screenshot function. Congratulations.

i upgraded last night to 2.1 with a pretty new non-jailbroken 3g iphone. I found a helpful forum indicating a jailbreak was already possible, so i went for it. All went smoothly with the upgrade and the jailbreak, and i see the genius feature, altered 3g/E logo etc. I do not however see the ability to set up the multiple text alert thingie either.

Battery Life: Seems to be better by /- 25%. Not bad considering the battery used to barely last a full business day. Though I still keep WiFi and Bluetooth turned off to help preserve whatever battery life I can.
Contacts: I have about 1,500 contacts in my list. Used to take about 10-11 seconds after hitting contacts before I could scroll. Now it’s about 2-3 seconds. Keying in searches hangs barly a second…better than the 3-5 seconds previously. Definitely much better on the Contacts.
Apps: Can’t tell much difference. Although, when using Pandora in my car, with an external aux device line to hook into my car’s radio…when I turn off the car and unplug the aux line, iTunes starts playing automatically…very strange.

I am having problems, not with drop call but when I surf the net. It kicks me off. I thought the 2.1 would fix that but nope. I am constantly on the Internet, and it wants to kick me off.

The white flash is the screenshot mode. Its always been there. 2.1 is sweet. Pwnd it using my MBPro, no frills Jailbreaking.

what size is the download

When are they going to update the firmware so I can send and receive MMS? Anyone?
