HTC Touch HD vs iPhone 3G

Even though the unit you see in the picture is still just a pre-release model, it’s hard to deny that the HTC Touch HD does look better than the iPhone 3G thanks to its bigger and brighter display. HTC Touch HD side-by-side with iPhone 3G As for the lack of flash, an interesting side-by-side comparison of the same photo taken indoors reveals that the Touch HD does quite a remarkable job in ambient lighting as opposed to the iPhone. Same photo taken indoors, Touch HD is better However, the iPhone still has a slight advantage in terms of thickness ergonomic design although it looks a bit longer and wider than the Touch HD. Click to enlarge Click to enlarge So, aside from visual comparison of the two, how does HTC's latest device stack up to Apple’s mobile phone? Shown in the table below are the major areas where the two are completely different aside from the OS, of course. So which is better? While the HTC Touch HD does get my vote this early on, it’s still hard to say which one is exactly better due to how different Windows Mobile 6.1 is from Mac OS X mobile OS. The HTC Touch HD does have a bigger and better display and camera, but there’s more to a mobile smartphone than just those two features combined. We'll wait for the final product to come out before we make any final decision on this face-off, but I must admit, the HTC Touch HD does look quite impressive.

Why do you give the thickness advantage to the iPhone. Dont be fooled by the iPhone's tapered edges - its thicker than the Touch HD, and people who have held it said the Touch HD's hand-feel is better.

i thought this phone was due to have 3.5G so how does the Iphone 3G rank higher?

As a business user I would tend to side with the Touch HD mostly on the fact that it's running WM6.1 despite the fact that I would love to own an iPhone.

The real shocker for me with the comparison above is that the iPhone's screen has 16M colors vs the Touch HD's 64K. Does that even compare?

My hope is that WM7 will be able to put this fully touch screen device to better use and then perhaps it will be a rival for the iPhone in both the business and personal lifestyles.

HTC Touch HD (Code name "BlackStone") is a nice device but how does stack up next to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1?

Which cellphone companies are going to receiving each respective device?

people are truly expecting this, great battle of affordable intelligent phones. old players in the phone industry must fight the fight. offer the best or simply vanish.

Yes, the HTC Touch DOES look impressive! :) Is it out in the market already?

HTC Touch HD vs Iphone 3G? come on!…lets not compare. We clearly know what device is the winner (that is of course HTC Touch HD…. – I personally do not like Iphone or anything to do with Apple). Let’s keep in mind that this comparison is very silly.
HTC Touch HDs – are targeted for business people with on the go mobility requirements
Iphone 3Gs are targeted for trendy (lets say younger generations...not all) people who are in demand of music/movies/podcast etc. Both target different markets and not so comparable.
Iphone 3G vs Samsung P2 ….. HTC Touch HD vs O2/Blackberry/Palm are much better to compare. Thank you very much ….(this are my opinion only)

In then pictures the iPhone looks longer and wider than the Touch HD, however the dimensions in the chart don't reflect this, are you sure these specs are correct?

All 3 dimensions, on either phone, are within a FRACTION of a mm.

Do you know how small that is?

Now if the HTC had the new android goole OS, that would be impressive.

Only 512 MB of memory? The Omnia has 16GB!!! But I love the screen.

@alfred
The reason why the 3G iPhone comes with enterprise features Apple is primarily targeting the business sector with it so I don't agree that the new iPhone is just for the trendy ones.

i need the htc touch how do i get?

how about its price...
which is more expensive?

Where do i get HTC touch Hd please inform me the price and country through my e-mail it is best

"Only 512 MB of memory? The Omnia has 16GB!!!"

Hmmmm.... 512MB is RAM the 16 GB is flash. That is apple to banana...

There is no price yet as it hasn't been official released in various countries. However, Amazon Germany is selling it for €619.

i'd love to have both..=)

Touch HD is really impressive. The basic problem is the Windows OS, which eats up hardware resource and still staggers when it comes to multi-tasking. WinMo 6.1 is certainly *NOT* the OS i would like to see on touch HD. I hope it runs on WinMo 7 (expecting and hoping that it would be better in terms of performance with multi-tasking).

Ok it has 512MB internal memory, if that is such a big problem for some people, they can just buy a 16MB SD memory card.

If Microsoft develop a nicer OS, better GUI and HTC Multitouch, MS/HTC will win.

@Allan David Reyes
“The reason why the 3G iPhone comes with enterprise features Apple is primarily targeting the business sector with it so I don’t agree that the new iPhone is just for the trendy ones.”

Did I just mention “not all?” – if you will notice most of the market of the iPhone are the younger generation. iPhone tries so hard to market it with the business people. – serious ones would not buy it – business integration with it is useless.

Not only that this comparison is very silly (HTC Touch HD vs Iphone 3G), comparing storage memory of 8G/16GB of Apple against 512 ROM of HTC is also very silly ….whoa I never thought storage memory is comparable with ROM?!...

Why compare phones to the iphone? The iphone is an ipod touch with a crappy phone module bolted on as an afterthought.

Of course the HTC Touch HD is far superior, but buyers of iphones are not exactly in the market for superior phones. They want to buy what they are told to buy. So let them. I won't criticise their retarded decisions, they are playing into the hands of apple's quite good marketing and branding techniques.

Personally I'm very thankful of the iphone, as crap as it is, although I would never ever waste time or money to even think about buying one it is spurring real phone manufacturers such as HTC to stop being so lazy and create much better phones.

The Sony Xperia X1 will be a major disappointment to most, but I feel the HTC Touch HD will not. My current phone has Windows Mobile 6.1 and a screen resolution of 480x640 and it works very nice. Looking forward to getting my hands on an HD when it is available, and please all you others just get the iphone then lower demand for the HD and lower price for me, thanks.

What I can't believe is why HTC are STILL using 65K colour screens, not even 262K let alone 16 million odd. It will be interesting to see how the resolution affects the quality of image overall but I think playing a movie for example next to the iphone the user will realise how bad the picture looks compared to the iphones 16M colours.
I say the iphones screen wins the screen comparison.

It will also be interesting to see how the HD handles touch-flo after the dire performance of the Diamond because unless it's smooth it's a complete failure and can't be used realistically everyday without the user eventually hurling it into someones face.

touch HD by comparison is quite impressive where do i buy it and hows the price compared to apple3g

65536 colours is due to Windows Mobile 6.1. The actual hardware can handle much more. I highly doubt Windows Mobile 7 will have this limitation.... but you never know!!

Of course 4x the resolution is better than a few more shades of colour! Especially compared with a company that cannot even spell a simple 6 letter word... roll eyes and wonder why September the Eleventh happend.... roll roll.... sarcasm....

The iphone doesn't actually display 16,777,216 colours.... unless you can show the proof from the LCD manufacturer.

Anyway all this comparison to the apple ipod touch with a crapp bolt-on phone module is a bit pathetic. Either you want a music/video player, or you want a phone, one or the other.

thank God for google, samsung, htc, motorola, others because they're going to offer more better and reasonably priced intelligent phones. yes, iphone seems the 'best' for now, but save your money, no telco "activations" will be required for their phones. happiness is not a brand-bait. your choice.

To all the iphone haters out there, do you own an iphone? Having both the iphone and HTC Diamond, I can tell you hands down I would rather have the iPhone, now if I never used the iPhone, i'd love the Touch, but since HTC is still using windows mobile 6.x it is no where near the useability of the iPhone or Blackberry for business. Now I have stopped using my blackberry curve for the iPhone.

To everyone, don't knock something you have never used. Just because you have played with it for 5 min, does not constitute use. Make it your primary phone for two weeks, then make a decision.

As a side note, if its 3G on 900/2100 it wont work on US 3G networks...

Tom is spot on.

I and colleagues have a lot of experience of using HTC kit for business. the ones with keyboards work great as email / texting devices. And the new model resolutions shoudl mean that you can seriously edit documents on them.

But as a phone? No. I have never missed so many calls. It is quite frustrating watching a call come in, and ring off again before the OS catches up and responds to your key press.

I also have an iPhone, and I don't think I fit the sterotype in some of these messages, on fashion or age! I like it as a phone because it just works. I havent missed a call yet.

I'm level-headed enough to know it isnt perfect. The day I have to write a long email reply on it, I shall probably hate it (as I would any document with an onscreen keyboard).

I don't care who makes my phone. I couldnt give a stuff about branding. But personally I do want it to work as a phone first, a decent web-browser next, and have a push-email exchange client.

Maybe WM7 will be the answer. Or not.

None of us know, and we all have to make our own choices.

Who cares which phone wins this battle, the Xperia beats them both by a mile with an actual hardware keyboard so ur not limited to a touchscreen.

"65536 colours is due to Windows Mobile 6.1. The actual hardware can handle much more."

Wrong. In fact, it's the opposite: Windows Mobile can handle up to 16M colours, the screen does not.

"Why doesn't WM allow OEMs to make use of these better screens?"

The short answer is: "We do."

The medium answer is: "But don't be so sure you want them to."

And the long answer is ... well the rest of this entry: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/09/07/462187.aspx

Only fools! Could you compare two products for different purposes?
As long as Microsoft makes the OS for any device... that device sucks! Don't compare only look or technical specs. Compare first what you will use to. Will you, ordinary people, use all the facilities of HTC? Let's get real.... but first of all, i am glad to hear Apple has some rivals. That makes them get better!

Thank you Apple for the iphone for making ordinary people dumb enough to buy it... so that i will be able to my other far superior phone because of its low demand.... I love it when Iphone cannot even take video..or even send MMS or lets just say implement a 4 year old technology (3G) and dumb people reacts as if it is new.. wow 3G on I phone! "I gotta have that"..stupid

so that i will be able to BUY other far superior phone

have u ever thought about the GPS? On windows mobile i can run TomTom which takes all the maps of the Device's sd card. While the stupid iPhone makes you connect to the Internet all the time for downloading Map data, thats why the phone companies love it! I Phones are for stupid mainstream dumb asses.

Hoi ppl is got the iPhone 4 weeks and it sucks because i miss the basic things on a smartphone
like copy past cut and flashplayer so uw can't compare iPhone to a real pda.my biggest mistake was buying the iPhone and now i plan 2 sell and buy the thc touch hd because you have real freedom about adds and plug in.

My advice don't buy iPhone touch much restricts.

I read that the Touch HD was gonna be released in The US with the Andriod os next year...

@Remy

HTC will definitely be launching a new Android-based phone next year, but it probably won't be the HTC Touch HD as it is already confirmed not be shipping to the US.

If you're comparing screens, try taking the HD outside. Unlike the iPhone, it's a total washout in daylight, made worse by the highly reflective cover. So its useless as a normal phone (or car GPS). But I guess most reviewers never venture out into the real world!

That's exactly why we're holding out on making any early conclusions regarding this face-off. We'd like to try it out first to really see how it stacks up in real world situations.

I read so much about HTC touch HD and iPhone 3G. But I have decided to go for Apple iPhone 3G.

actually iphone sucks. how can u compare it with htc touch hd, when you are out with ur frens and havin fun others take pics and sends mms to other frens and takes videos, but i phone users, i feel sorry for them. they can only take pics with 2mp camera. and many more things makes hd superior thn iphone

I have also heard that Iphone can't even send MMS... And the camera on Iphone relly sux. The iphone are good in some cases but HTC are better in almost everyway. And i havent made all this up, it's facts i have read.

A guess this debate will rage on for some time, Adrian makes some vital points, you HAVE to OWN these devices and use them for a good time to make a jugement, "i have never owened an Iphone and never will" is a case in point.
I have owned many win mobile devices as well as an Iphone.
I currently use A nokia e90 and an Ipod touch (oh how i miss my iphone).
The Iphone makes such a good job of interacting with the user, it's lack of MMS and cut and paste etc, which has been added to V3 of the ip

I bought the HD as my preffered phone than the Iphone. I guess it only depends on your requirements..

the guy who wrote this is fucking stupid

if u multiply all the dimensions of the touch HD , it makes less then the iphone yet he gives the win to the iphone in comparisome
