Goodbye uMobile, Hello Red Mobile

uMobile has official ceased its operations last week with Red Mobile rising from its ashes to take its place. We’re a bit saddened to hear this news, but nevertheless, its replacement looks more than capable of filling up the void the beleaguered telecom has left behind. We’re not quite sure what the reason was for uMobile’s untimely demise, but my personal take on this is that they weren’t able to garner much support in their bid to offer a unique approach to advertising and mobile communications service all rolled into one.

Red Mobile

However, Red Mobile has emerged in its downfall and is offering the country’s lowest pre-paid call rates at P0.50/minute for Red Mobile-to-Red mobile calls. Despite the name change, the main company behind Red Mobile is the same guys who put up uMobile, Cure, which is a subsidiary of Smart Telecommunications. Current uMobile subscirbers won’t be left in the dark as they will be absorbed by Red Mobile and qualify for a free SIM. If you weren’t called or informed by a uMobile CSR, you can call Red Mobile at 9249999 to inquire on how you can get your new SIM. Based on my brief conversation with a CSR, Red Mobile provides better connection with other networks which uMobile failed to do. That, coupled with the low call rates, is indeed something to look forward to.

Hopefully, Red Mobile will stay longer in the industry, and with a more traditional approach to the biz, I’m optimistic that they most definitely will.

Unless they come up with “unlimited texting” schemes, there is no way people will move from Smart or Globe to Red. The .50 per minute call cannot compete with Sun’s.

I saw from a news ad that a 3G capable handset must be used with the Red Mobile SIM. 3G handsets are quite expensive for people who want to save on text/call rates and that leaves me wondering, who are the target users for this service? And why doesn’t Smart make promo bundles with phone manufacturers for 3G handsets if this is a requirement?

My take is that the reason uMobile didn’t took off was because Smart make a limitation on the membership. They have thought that limiting the invites to specific age limit will make the service an “in-thing”. Now, they just open the floodgates and re-brand it with low cost.

Anyway it doesn’t matter, unless they come up with unlimited texting its possible.

ssana pumatok to the max yan!

red Mobile has a good starting-off image, especially the rates they offer. However, as I was browsing their website, I saw this note below their list of rates: “Charging rates may change without prior notice. Upcoming services may have different charging rates.” SCARY, HUH?

when we first so the ad of red mobile on tv we’re curious about it so as its offer of .50 cents/min!!
me and my bf were planning to switch but first i owe to do some research about red. were sick of suns’ “unlimited” calls offers. really, their signals were limited. me and my bf and most of my frenz prefer calls than txt because we can communicate clearer so were really on to go for any call unlimiteds or cheaper calls w/o compromising the service.good thing red is under smart tel. so i guess we dont need to worry that much a8?=)
but the last comment on this site scares me to! i quoted:
“Charging rates may change without prior notice. Upcoming services may have different charging rates”
….right..kinda scary..tsktsk

I still prefer sun cellular. Sun cellular is the best.

kala nyo lng maganda ang red mobile syempre sa una papasarapin lng kau nyn pero 2 to 3 months lng baka magulat kau at mabuwisit dahil na scam lng pala kau nila…… unlike sun kahit na limited ang area of covrage nila 100% much cheaper to others ano san pa kau! wala na tatapat sa pag ka masa ng SUNCELLULAR the best na yan!

If you live in Metro Manila, hands-down, the best phone now is Bayan Wireless postpaid. I am giving up on the lousy, lousy, lousy Sun Cellular with their super lousy signals and their non-stop excuses.

Try a Bayan wireless postpaid and hear what you’ve been missing.

Bayan signal is acceptable as a 2nd phone, not reliable for emergencies. All their handheld phone sucks, and will only give you limited usage time. Why? If you dont have a signal (which is often the case when you’re inside the mall), their no namer phone (huawei) keeps on searching for signal unlike regular cell phones, thus draining the unit’s bat in just an hour. The unit also generates a lot of heat after two minutes of usage. Ask actual unit owners, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER BUYING a post paid unit.

if you want to compete with sun you should have unlimited txt with a very low cost like in sun they have 150 php unlimited txt for 1 month with free 3 hours call. The public will bite your product if you can match these. You said you have a good signal so if you can put an unli txt with a very low cost I my self will spread the news to my friends to swith in your red mobile.

yuck!!! they cant compete with sun cellular!!!

I was really curious when i heard about red mobile. The first time i saw it on tv, twas really catching since it is .50 cents for everything. Me and my friend was curious about it so we decided to buy one. I was really amazed with how clear it is for video calling. I we’ve tried is last night and it was completely fun. I just hoping that it will stay as it is with it’s rate. You guys were right, they might change their rates but any tel company will always put its diclaimer which is like that. Sun has their unlimited but we wouldn’t know that they might switch to unlimited as well…. Just try it for you check how cool it is. Anyway the sim is very cheap and your 10 peso load will really last longer….

All telco companies start with a good catch! They offer low and cheap deals but ones saturated, they don’t bother to add more lines for voice calling. Why? Because by doing so its too expensive for them. The end result…cheaper but busy…busy…busy…when you call. Worst, in the middle of a call you are dropped just to share with other starving callers!

NTC must also rule out that the time limit or expiry date of of pre-paid loads must be ABOLISHED. It’s just like putting your money in your own wallet then after a period of time its gone to nowhere! What an idiot scheme. Telco must respect us when to use our phone. They should not dictate us because WE ARE THEIR BOSS!

A Php 0.50 a minute call must be declared by Red Mobile that it will last for at least 3 to 5 years to be more attractive. Else, it’s just a pure BAIT and scam!

smart network? wag na. sun nalang

well, its a good move for this company to have cheaper rates of calls and texts. but as i read your site i found out that it only works for 3g gadgets and a place wherein 3g signal is available..not all people here in agusan can afford 3g capable gadgets……. i think this company must realize this problem for us to avail you service……..tumbasan nyo ang sun cellular na nationwide coverage………..>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

of course..the target market are the ones who can afford 3g phones and those who prefers to call rather than text. imagine! at 50 cents you can call your love ones..plus 3g! thats cheap already..now the question is.. how strong and WIDE is the signal???

Too bad service is limited to areas with 3G signals. What do you do when traveling or when you go beyond the areas with 3G signals and you need to make a call?

thats right janet, not all areas have 3g signal like us here in province…..the vision of red mobile is good but the service area is poor how come this type of network will aranged some network company..????hmmmmm sana nman e-upgrade there system to avail this kind of network service……

i have a red sim. havent opened it yet.. its worth a try. mura lang nman..

we need competitors like sun and red mobile to make txt messaging more affordable.

I guess, instead of buying RED, its safer to have 2 phones (or Sim). one for Sun, and one for Globe or Smart.
Baka mag sisi lang ako sa huli pag tinapon ko yung Sun at Globe sim ko kapalit ng RED.
Why? because RED is much cheaper than Globe and Smart but much costly than Unlimited Sun even with its poor performance.
One other thing, Red’s charges is subjected to change..
(baka promo lang yung 50 cents a minute para pakagatin yung mga tao ulike sun na “forever unlimited”)

I won’t give up my SUN for Red. Red is probably just available for Smart to compete with SUN then close them down. Then they might jack their rates back up once they accomplish that.

I liked the Umobile sim better than Red. though i havent gotten a chance to use red mobile yet! the umobile csr called me about qualifying for a red sim but it never came.

its really hard to find sim card..we tried looking for sim card so we could try red mobile …..

hopefully they will be better than sun
