Digital Music Players: Microsoft 1, Apple 15

Apple is apparently losing ground to Microsoft in the digital media player department - well, at least in one category. According to the latest reviews from reputable sources like PC World, PC Mag, CNet, Wired and YahooTech the newly-released Zune 80 trumps the iPod Classic in almost all departments.

Among the comments are that, for the same price and storage capacity, the Zune 80 is smaller, thinner and lighter, has a larger screen, FM radio, wireless peer-to-peer sharing, wifi syncing with your PC, a great interface, an equally good controller, good battery life, great video performance, a design-customizable back panel and more. Even the Zune Marketplace looks better than the iTunes Store, which Dean Takahashi says looks like a spreadsheet.

This proves you can’t be a loser all the time. Go, Bill!

You guys should also factor in iTunes and the iTunes music store…
    its all about the experience…
Zune might be big on HW, but it still lacks the “iPod experience”…

im with DDis2cool, should be the iPod touch…. wait till bigger NAND flash chips are created and an 80 GB (or bigger) ipod touch should be just around the corner

I hope Apple has learned from the past. They cannot simply sit back and relax. Microsoft is not known to just roll over and die. Look at Xbox 360 now. Great analogy on the Smartphone @ Bernie

This is exactly how MS made it in the PDA/Smartphone market. After hanging in the coat tails of Palm for a number of years, Microsoft started to dominate the PDA/Smartphone market through sheer tenacity backed with billions of dollars in R&D.

Remember how Microsoft’s Windows CE stacks up against PalmOS 2.x? It’s like putting a Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens side-by-side in a room! But look at Windows Mobile today, it may not be *the* ideal mobile OS but it sure is more modern/updated than the heavily patched PalmOS Garnet.

Is this how it will be with Zune vs. iPod? IMHO, Apple should learn the lessons of Palm and not rest on their laurels. There are a lot of room for improvement in the PMP niche and Apple should take advantage of those in order to maintain their dominance in the market.

Even with all those features, it’s still a Zune to me.
