Movies for rent on iTunes soon?

12/28/07

Posted under News, Business, Announcements, Video, DRM, iPods, iPhone, iTunes Store, Apple Inc.

The Financial Times reports that a deal has been struck between Apple and 20th Century Fox that will let iTunes users rent the latest Fox DVD releases for a limited time, ready for viewing on an iPod or iPhone, or their computers, and likely on Apple TV.

This marks the first time FairPlay, which is Apple’s version of Digital Rights Management currently used on iTunes-bought tracks, to be used on non-Apple products. Apple is also currently in talks with Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros for a similar deal.

The agreement between Apple and 20th Century Fox is expected to be announced at Macworld on January 14, but it isn’t yet known if the deals with Sony, Paramount and Warner will be closed in time to be announced on the same date.

It’s great news but it’s quite irrelevant to us here in the Philippines since we cannot buy anything in iTunes.

When will they let us buy stuff on iTunes?

There are people here in the Philippines who have the capacity to pay for content. I’d like to buy some stuff there too. I got an iPod and I can’t fill it up with purchased iTunes content.

Whether iTunes has movies, games, rentals and music available, it is irrelevant ( for now) to us since we cannot buy anything off iTunes.

Let’s hope that Apple can give us the access. Mr. Jobs. We buy iPod too, you know.

Rodney, while this blog is written in the Philippines, my readership is international, so it’s not really irrelevant in that broader context.

And while strictly speaking the iTunes Store is not supported in our home country, there are lots of ways around it.

For the sake of research and discussion let’s look at one method:

Here’s an open secret most people have used outside of the authorized iTunes markets - buy or have someone buy you an iTunes Gift Card. Then register at the US Store using the gift card, instead of a US credit card.

Here’s the iffy, questionable part - you’ll have to register with a foreign address, fake or no. Use a relative’s address in the States, or if you have a friend who lives there, ask if you can use his. (Actually, some people have even gotten through using President Bush’s address: the White House, believe it or not.)

There you go. All you need do now is reload your account with more prepaid gift cards from iTunes when you need more credit, which you can have a friend buy from the States. He can just email or text you the codes/pins, which you enter into your account.

Then you can start filling up your iPod with purchased iTunes content.

(I don’t know if this loophole has since been closed, but a lot of folk I know have used this trick. I’m not saying you should try it out; I’m just telling you what’s possible.)

That method still works :) I have an itunes account using my relatives address in the US :D Though I haven’t purchased anything, I find it really useful especially when dowloading free featured stuff on itunes :D
