Video wallpaper for your iPhone

- Video, Hacks, iPhone, First Look -

If you’re the type who really needs to do everything you can to your gear, here’s something you can do to your jailbroken iPhone - add video wallpaper.

A group of developers called Skrew created an app called vWallpaper, or Video Wallpaper for the the iPhone, which changes your regular pic into a running video. (Hope the developer’s name is all it is - this being an Alpha version, we don’t really know what it could do to your iPhone, so be warned). There are almost a couple of dozen of video wallpapers you can download from within the app.

All you need do is add http://repo.sc/jtizzle to your Installer source list and then check out vWallpaper from the Install/Recent Packages tab. If it’s not there look under the Multimedia category under Install.

Video (complete with totally inappropriate music) of how it looks over here.

Buzz Out Loud goes video!

- Video, Notebooks, iTunes Store, Macs in Media, First Look -

The Doodler’s favorite podcast - Buzz Out Loud - has morphed into a vidcast for real. Unlike the live Ustream feeds I wrote about before, this one’s a full-bore video, complete with a multi-camera setup and a director!

Other than that, nothing’s changed much as far as content and execution are concerned. Except for the fact that now hosts Tom Merritt, Molly Wood and Jason Howell now have to worry about what to wear and how to look when they do the show. (Molly’s made up! And accessorized too!) And to be mindful of how to act since they’re on cam now.

At least you can now see them as they do the show. Tom and Molly look and act they way they normally do on their other video stuff, but producer  Jason seems a bit awkward. (For some reason, I’ve always thought of him as looking like actor Jason Segel from How I Met Your Mom.) You can also see their hardware prefs - in front of Jason is a Thinkpad, Molly a Dell (?), and Tom a MacBook Pro (and there goes your Mac connect, haha).

It’s not yet on iTunes, but you can catch the first BOL Video on CNET TV here, for streaming or for download.

Psystar not psycho vaporware?

- New Stuff, Hardware, Video, Oddities, Breaking News, First Look -

Gizmodo’s got proof!

Someone actually got an actual living, breathing Psystar Open Computing unit, that third-party hardware pseudo-Macintosh desktop and made a video of it booting up. Software Update can’t seem to figure out what it is, but it thinks it’s a Macbook Pro. Whatever it is, it’s damned fast!

See the exclusive video!

UPDATE: Psystar itself seems to want to validate itself. It just put up a video of its own on their site, although they can’t seem to shake off that cloud of seediness and smarm that’s been clinging to it from Day One, up to now. Especially now. Watch it here.

Faster Safari

- Net Stuff, Apps, First Look -

Looks like I can finally retire resource-hungry Firefox soon, if developer news about the new version of Safari is accurate.

People currently testing Webkit, or the new iteration of Apple’s own browser, are finding that the developer build currently being seeded and tested is already 2.5 times faster than the current Safari release - and that is still in it’s unoptimized state!

If this is any indication, the speed boost of the forthcoming Safari will be considerable. Computerworld has more details on the speed boost and the new features here.

Don’t take my word for it, but it also seems that Webkit is safe enough to test on your own system. If you want to, download the 15.8mb dmg file (it bloats to 62mb when expanded) of the unoptimized WebKit Build r30090 here; later you can get whatever nightly build is available through the Webkit opening page.

Been trying it out myself, and dang, it’s fast.

MacBook Air dissected; thin slices, please

- Notebooks, Pics, First Look -

As we’ve been expecting, our beloved friends at iFixit have done their magic and sliced up a fresh new MacBook Air to see what’s in the air tonight. Amazing feat of engineering, guys.

Take a look at the autopsy here.
