Video wallpaper for your iPhone

- Video, Hacks, iPhone, First Look -

If you’re the type who really needs to do everything you can to your gear, here’s something you can do to your jailbroken iPhone - add video wallpaper.

A group of developers called Skrew created an app called vWallpaper, or Video Wallpaper for the the iPhone, which changes your regular pic into a running video. (Hope the developer’s name is all it is - this being an Alpha version, we don’t really know what it could do to your iPhone, so be warned). There are almost a couple of dozen of video wallpapers you can download from within the app.

All you need do is add http://repo.sc/jtizzle to your Installer source list and then check out vWallpaper from the Install/Recent Packages tab. If it’s not there look under the Multimedia category under Install.

MacBook Air with EVDO

- Hardware, Wireless, Hacks, Notebooks, Alternatives -

Of course the sticking point with the MacBook Air is that it is a closed machine - it is what it is, and that’s it. Well, that’s never really stopped some folk. If there’s a will - plus some dremel tools and a soldering iron - there’s a way.

Take this guy named Jordan Bunnell who added an EVDO broadband wifi card (a USB727 Verizon Aircard) to the innards of his Air, something most people didn’t think possible given the space available. True, he had to sacrifice his wifi and Bluetooth, but he proves it can done. Hm.

Check out the butchery, complete with pictures and discussion here and here.

Use iPhone as a touchpad for your computer

- Apps, Hacks, iPhone -

I’ve gotten used to using bluetooth, my old phone and Salling Clicker to control my presentations, and sorely miss the functionality in the iPhone.

Enter Touchpad, which turns jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches into a wireless touchpad control for Macs, Windows and Linux computers. All the usual trackpad functions are there, plus right-edge page scrolling. Cool!

Someone named Jahanzeb Sherwani created Touchpad from VNSea. All you need do is add the http://cnp.qlnk.net/ repository to Installer.app, download and install it, and follow Sherwani’s instructions on how to install and enable VNC on the computer you choose to use Touchpad on.

Visit Jahanzeb’s developer page here for more details and instructions, even a video.

Touch my iPod video

- Hacks, Free Stuff, iPods, Because You Can, Interface -

Those of you who own a regular 5 or 5.5Gen iPod video but secretly covet an iPod Touch with its wifi and multi-touch interface - well, you’re SOL: you’d still need to either buy a Touch or get over it; no hack’ll solve your problems.

But if you want to settle for just a similar looking interface, you’re in better luck.

The same kooks who brought you the hack that gives your iPod video the iPod Classic’s interface has created a new hack that gives iPod videos the same menus and look of the iPod Touch - if not the multitouch capability.

It’s a bit involved, but the guys at iPodHacking.com assure us there is no way the hack will brick your iPod video, so you can rest easy and hack away with impunity.

Free download link and instructions are here.

Once again, Mac-A-Doodle would like to remind everyone that we’re just passing on the info, ok? Hax0r beware.

Removing the 1000 SMS storage limit on the iPhone

- New Stuff, Mods, Apps, Hacks, iPhone -

There’s apparently a hack to remove the arbitrarily-imposed 1K limit of SMSs that can be stored on an iPhone.  Since I got one I’ve come across this upper limit a few times already and I’ve always wondered why this has to be so.

iPhone Skinning tells us about a hack called “No SMS Limit” (heck of an imaginative title) that removes this block. Whether or not this will result in complications down the road remains to be seen, so hax0r beware.

To get it, just open up NullRiver’s Installer on your iPhone (assuming you’ve jailbroken your unit and are more or less used to adding third-party apps; if not, you need to go to a whole other post), and add http://iphone.totalmatrix.net to your Sources. Reload and look for it under Tweaks (1.1.1).

Be aware you’ll also need SMSD on your system to access the SMS archives (and you need to get this first before getting No SMS Limit), which in turn require Erica Sadun’s UIctl, a UI for launchctl, first. Both SMSD and UIctl are available on Installer already.

No SMS Limit will require you to cold-boot your iPhone, and will patch SMSD before it runs, so be forewarned.

As usual, Mac-A-Doodle just passes on the info; your risk, your call. I’ve installed it myself and will report back if it messes up or hoses my phone.
