Quicktime 7.5 Update

- Downloads, Quicktime, Apple Inc., Updates & Patches -

As is expected after a keynote address, we have the first of likely several updates to come, probably until the release of the new iPhone on July 11. (I was expecting iTunes to come first, but I was wrong.)

It’s Quicktime 7.5.

As usual, here’s Apple’s detailed and thorough explanation of what’s new: “QuickTime 7.5 improves application compatibility and addresses security issues.”

Hmph.

It’s a 60mb download via Software Update, or through iTunes for Windows users. Restart required.

…and Quicktime gets updated once more.

Seriously now, OS X is starting to act a bit too much like Windows. But hey, if it makes things better, why the heck not?

If it isn’t on your desktop yet, run Software Update to get Quicktime 7.4.1 (54.1mb), which “addresses security issues and improves compatibility with third-party applications.”

A quick dig into the guts of Apple Support shows us the real reason for the revision:

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2

Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

Description: A heap buffer overflow exists in QuickTime’s handling of HTTP responses when RTSP tunneling is enabled. By enticing a user to visit a maliciously crafted webpage, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved bounds checking.”

Not that I understand any of it, but it sounds good.

No word yet if it tanks anything, but go get, if you’re the Early Updater type like me.

Check your iTunes - as expected, it’s upgrade time, to accommodate the new Movie Rental facility unveiled at the Keynote.

I was going to download something from iTunes when I was informed that the Terms of Service had changed, and I had to agree before I was allowed to proceed. Long document. Scary.

I actually tried to read it to find out if there was something there that would bork our long-standing and illicit relationship. Finding none, I went ahead and clicked, and then the downloads started.

Then it informed me some of my downloads required the newer version of iTunes to work, so I went and started the process. So far so good.

Minutes later, a window from Software Update popped up and told me that there were iTunes and Quicktime updates available. Yeah, yeah, I know already! In my language, ang kulit ng Apple. Sheesh.

Here’s the fine print.

What’s new in iTunesĀ 7.6
Rent and download your favorite movies with iTunes on your computer or directly to your living room on Apple TV. Enjoy rented movies in sizes up to 720p HD with surround sound on your Apple TV and sizes up to DVD-quality on your computer. Transfer your rented movies from iTunes to your iPod or iPhone and enjoy them on the go.

Also, purchase and download your favorite TV shows, music, and more directly on your Apple TV. Effortlessly transfer purchases made on Apple TV back to your computer with iTunes.

And as usual, the vague description of Quicktime 7.4:

QuickTime 7.4 addresses security issues and delivers:
- Numerous bug fixes
- Support for iTunes

(Despite my sniping, I luuurve the idea I can rent movies now. Cool.)

New Garageband update lets you make your own iPhone ringtones

- Apps, Quicktime, iPhone, Updates & Patches -

The Garageband update released yesterday lets you roll your own - and throws wide open the doors to lots of user-created original ringtones.

The Garageband 4.1.1 update lets you export your creations easily to your iPhone, and you can assemble from the Garageband library of loops and iLife jingles. Personally, I don’t understand the ringtone mania - for me a ring is a ring is a ring - but apparently it’s a big deal for some people.

The update also improves overall Garageband stability. Your mileage may vary depending on your configuration, but the update is roughly 48mb.

Also released at the same time were Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 6, and Quicktime 7.3.1 which deals with a pile of security issues.
